He's missed some time recently, but I liked what I saw of Cutler for that role.

Without a doubt. He looks quite classy as well. Just need a few more halfback types who can play midfield IMO. I'd prefer not to see Rich and Hanley down back next year.

Though I do admit his propensity to machete the odd person in the head is a bit of a red flag.

I honestly laughed out loud at this, being both an understatement and a succinct summary of my post. :D

If as you say we would be looking at a mid with our first pick, would we trade pick 4/5 for D Beams if he wants to come home?

If its pick 4 we end up with its going to be a pretty easy equation. There's a standout top 4 in this draft, 2 KPFs in McCartin and Wright, a good inside mid in Brayshaw and a good mid-fwd in Petracca. We need a quality mid that can play on the inside and we need a kpf. So we'll take whoever remains at #4. If melbourne gets a double dip we hope like hell gws see value in durdin though thats extremely unlikely if petraccas available at their pick.

Im coming around to the idea of a mid, although id still go Wright if he is there. Durdin or lever would also tempt me. Cant work out who Melb would go. Would they look at a durdin with Frawley out the door?

I still have concerns about our backline in a few years, so I could see us going a quality defender if Wright is gone. Might just depend on how we rate the mids. We could do with another inside clearance winning mid who can match Rocky, average high 20's to 30 touches and win some hard ball. I think Zorko, Taylor and Hanley give us good line breaking drive, and Rich playing more outside to use his kicking will also help us out.

Hard to really know yet. Think the top 5 order of the draft is settled, but the actual picks still arent.

I think the club will settle on Gardner and Clarke to shore up the main two posts for now. We also have McModra and Bourke floating around. I reckon another year or two without a defender at a high pick. Who knows, Lisle may even properly reinvent himself.

Also a couple of good academy kids can play key defence. Leppa referred to McStay as "the future of our key defensive stocks" in pre-season and has apparently compared Dizzy to Silvagni, so he doesn't see them as just 3rd talls like some here do. There's three potential KPDs showing a lot of promise. I agree that we don't need to draft key defenders with any early picks for a while.

In the future they will be key defenders, just don't have the size to match it with the big forwards yet. Silvagni is a great comparison for Dizzy, Scarlett is an apt one too. I'd really love to see McStay play forward. His ability to read the flight and take big contested marks for someone in their first year is very rare.

We are looking at a key defender at the moment, one that is not high in the pecking order now due t injury this season, but was ranked high at the start of the year. Who knows what will come of it but we have expressed interest.

Has to be Lever.

We may be speaking to him i dont know - but the person i am talking about is not him. I will leave it there as the person telling me is him himself. ;)

Yeah I dont think we are at the point where we need to use a high pick on a defender. But it will be interesting if the likes of Durdin or Lever give us something to think about, as both offer more than just a KPD option. Durdin obviously for his flexibility at either end and Lever is apparently a real rebounding offensive top notch defender. I can see McStay and Cutler being used across HB along with Clarke and Gardiner as key defenders, but someone like Lever might really conplete that future defensive unit.

We still have needs at either end and in the middle. Will be interesting to see if we go after a need, or go at best available overall talent, which we very well might rate someone like Lever.

Whilst im on the Wright band wagon, a counter arguement could be that with Martin and Bergs sharing FF, Close at CHF and McGuane/McStay/Paine as a 3rd tall, we are fairly set with picking up Hammelman. Whilst Martin is a bit old, by the time he moves on Close would be probably 5th year, Hammelman 3rd and we could be fine for tall talent with Freeman and probably 1 or 2 others yet to come. So if we rated Lever or even a mid as a better overall player, one could argue we go for them, even over someone like Wright.

I personally feel as if Wright suits our biggest need though. Marking forward option and he will also provide that back up ruck option, which also helps post Martin.

Overall I dont really care as whoever we pick they will be a great player. It would help to know which way GWS and Melb were leaning so we maybe had a better Idea of who we really had left to pick from.

Is it just me or is there a bit of a trend with us looking at likely types who have gone off the radar a bit through injury? Robbo and Cutler? from last year. I'm sure Close was touted an earlier pick before an injury?
