We do like our smokeys. Players who drop down due to injury in their draft year etc. Would not surprise me if it is another Justin Clarke.

We may be speaking to him i dont know - but the person i am talking about is not him. I will leave it there as the person telling me is him himself. ;)
Riddles and rhymes, interesting! Durdin it must be then. We would be speaking to a number of players though.

Is it just me or is there a bit of a trend with us looking at likely types who have gone off the radar a bit through injury? Robbo and Cutler? from last year. I'm sure Close was touted an earlier pick before an injury?

I've noticed the same thing with the same examples (not quite so sure on Cutler's injury status though).

It's given us opportunities to try and obtain more talent by taking on more risk, and we've been in a good place to do so given the large turnover of players we've had - as a result we've had large numbers of draft picks, so if pick 30-something doesn't turn out we're not set back significantly as opposed to clubs who may only be taking two picks.

If we end up having to use our 2nd pick on Hammelman then it screams us picking a mid with our first, which will likely suit the 4th pick in the draft ammusing the top talls wil be taken

Us having to use a 2nd rounder will mean that a top 4 team will have to bid for him which I see as unlikely. No one will bid their top pick in the first 15 as he's probably not worth that high a pick.

Essendon probably wont either with the priority pick awarded to them for rampant illegal drug use

It's even more unlikely that St.Kilda, GWS or Melbourne will bid their 2nd rounder as they're likely to have either picked a tall with their first rounder or have many in stock already (GWS).

Just my 2c

That hurts.

Can't help but laugh at this post. More so because the current avatar completely matches the content.

We really need to draft an elite kick, someone who might become a left foot general out of backline. We need Rich and Hanley running through our midfield not kicking out from fullback!

Imagine the confusion that would cause.

Yup I think Kerr mentioned it in one zof his draft write ups. Especially with picks outside top 30 which are lucky picks most of the time.

Happy for Brayshaw if he lasts, Tom Lamb with a killer combine could come into our calculations but if Wright is still about I think he will be selected - IMO a lot will depend on making a double F/S selection of both Clayton and Roos work but not sure where that leaves Hammelmann and Dawson though?

I do wonder if we might consider being forced into paying 'overs' to secure that group of four?

While this would be a dramatic option and because I'm blinding by reading about a forward who has been kicking over 10 goals in his junior career, we could trade down the draft laddet a little, pick up McKenzie (?) and try and pick up a fringe midfielder out of the team we are dealing with.

Ultimately we would be best served by, considering they finish outside the eight, the pies and trying to work beams into the trade.

For that reason, I shall call this weekend The Beams Cup.

  • Just how good is Brayshaw? Because I am leaning to having faith in the talls we have. or are available to us.

I am probably leaning a little the same way, given that we will almost certainly take Hammelmann. Add him to Close, Freeman, Paine, possibly McStay as a forward. We are also still carrying a mix of McGuane, Merritt and Staker for the next year or two if we need a bigger older body up forward. I know they aren't all interchangeable but we can mix and match that lot a bit to develop our young guys. If we can't get a near guaranteed gun tall in the draft I still think we have a bit to work with, given time. I don't know we need another speculative key forward to try to develop. A gun, yes. But another project tall, I'm not so sure.

I would love another really good small defender but they tend to be the types you develop rather than draft. Other than that our needs are for inside speed and clearance skill (only because you can never have enough) and more outside run with elite kicking.

For the guys in the know more than myself, at what pick would you consider Pickett?Assuming the keys we had our eye on were gone. Will our pick be too low/high( whichever way you want it) As far as a mid goes, it seems his strengths are something we could really do with. His weaknesses however, I'm not sure of. Is it consistency that has him back a bit?

I hope we drop some of the talls. Having Freeman, Merrett, Close, Patfull, Gardiner, McStay, Maguire, Clarke and Paparone playing will effect the team ability to run games out. I would drop Paparone, Freeman, Close, Robertson and rest Clarke.

B: McGrath, Maguire, Garidner
HB: Adcock, Patfull, Harwood
C: Mayes, Hanley, Bewick
FOL: Martin, Rockliff, Lester
HF: Zorko, Merrett, Taylor
F: Green, Leuenberger, McStay
INT: Aish, Crisp, Paparone, Beams

In: Beams, Lester, McGrath, Leuenberger
Out: Clarke, Freeman, Close, Robertson
Wrong thread i believe champ.:-)

I thought that's always been our policy for a long while now. I remember we were able to get mitch clark at pick 9 or whatever when he was touted as a number 1 pick because of glandular fever and rockliff falling to the preseason draft if my memory serves because he broke his leg or something like that.

Did some special things in the WAFL for Souths vs Peel/dockers...took MOTY contender and kicked match winning goal on the siren from the pocket to see South Freo get up by 1pt. Think consistency is an issue but has shown some very good moments, a guy at work is on the South Freo board and they seem to be wrapped with him so far. Will be interesting to see where he lands in the draft.

Both rich and aish are other sliders who were slated as 1/2 pick early and slid to us at 7, more because of being known quantity compared to risers who 'could be anything'.
