Quite a bit of talk on Hammelmann and Dawson as our academy picks. Personally I am going to be very surprised if Andrews is not up with them when the heat goes on. I think he is the kind of defensive prospect we could use and with a fair bit of interest by other teams I don't expect him to last to the rookie draft if we pass on him.

Agree 100% Quigley. Do you in your honest opinion think we are going to have a use a second pick on hammelman?

Kerr always said we watch these guys for at least two years so it stands to reason that their form at 16/17 will be taken into account, if not necessarily given the same weight as their draft year form. Mayes is another one whose final year as a junior was not quite as impressive as the previous ones.

We really need to draft an elite kick, someone who might become a left foot general out of backline. We need Rich and Hanley running through our midfield not kicking out from fullback!

I actually disagree with that. Not about picking up elite kicks. God knows we need them. But Hanley. If you were to rewatch a couple games from the midyear period you'll notice the lions look their most potent when Hanley is playing a kind if hybrid halfback/mid role. His skills and drive are wonderful but his vision in assessing paths to goal and picking the right one is absolutely phenomenal. Particularly if we draft Bradshaw I think you can expect to see Hanley playing that role between mid and defence a lot next year.

When Hanley was playing at his best (eg v the Suns) he was playing as a genuine midfielder. It might have looked like he was in defence sometimes but that's because he was running so hard both ways. He tracked back into the defensive half as much as he pushed forward.

But I can definitely confirm he was in a true midfield role - as pure an onballer as Rocky. He started in the centre square and followed the footy around at all times.

Prefer Hanley in the guts and Rich down back. Hanley has shown that he can break free of tags for bursts whereas Rich hasn't shown that ability yet. Having Rich down back will give us that long penetrating kick that we need as well and will hopefully teach Rich how to run defensively which is imo his major flaw when he is getting tagged. Lost count that amount of times his direct opponent would burn us the other way last season. Rich could then transition back into the midfield for bursts when needed.

The problem is that Rich is not a defender. He is good when he gets the ball but when the opposition has it he is a bit of a liability. I personally leave him in the midfield and rely on natural progression and the fact that teams can't tag all of these guys and if they chose to go to him it frees up others. Rich will still get his 20 disposals.

I know a lot of you don't rate him but I am still really happy with the progression of Harwood and think he is developing fine. Cutler in bits we have seen has shown himself to be an excellent kick and having played down back a lot is a lot more comfortable there than Rich is. Cutler also has very nice height which we all know Leppa is obsessed with at the back.

I am thinking that we will have to if the changes go through. Otherwise I would say it is pretty touch and go. If I was another team I would have no trouble bidding to make the Lions use that pick.

On Andrews I would compare him very favourably to Jack Leslie who was taken in the first round last year by the Gold Coast. Both are 198cm KPD prospects. Leslie more athletic but Andrews more polished and the better defender at like times. These type of guys are in demand atm if they look like they can make it in defense.

He looks like that new generation of defenders who will be capable of taking those big forwards that are starting to come through. Pattons, boyd, daniher etc. funny how all of a sudden a few centimetres means so much.

Anyone have any thoughts on Toby McLean as a late pick if he ends up down there? I like the look of him even though he's obviously a small bloke. Seems to be able to mark pretty consistently as well as crumb.

I imagine he'd go to one of the VIC clubs but I'm still keen on us grabbing another small forward if we have a spot, especially one who can take a grab.

We do like our smokeys. Players who drop down due to injury in their draft year etc. Would not surprise me if it is another Justin Clarke.

I'd prefer Caleb Daniel if we're going after small forward types would free up Zorko to play a permanent midfield role

Could be interesting if McCartin and Wright are gone by pick 3, and we look at Brayshaw. If we did take them all, combined we would be taking 3 Dragons players in Clayton, Roos and Brayshaw.

I still can't get a read on Melbourne. They really could go a tall or a mid. Would have to think McCartin and Petracca are certain to be gone in the top 3. But Melbourne has that 3rd pick, and basically have their pick of Wright or Brayshaw.

Could take both if they get pick 4 from Frawley leaving.

I'm happy for us to take whoever they don't

Melbourne look like taking both if they do get that pick 4. Pickett is the player I'd be happy to take at pick 5

I have no problem provided the pick they get is assessed against Frawley's market value, not where Melbourne finish on the ladder. If he is adjudged to be worth a pick 10 fine, but why should they get pick 4 just because they finish low enough to have pick 3?

Did anyone hear Lethal completely belittle him last week? Said Frawley was the most overrated player in the comp and wouldn't be in the top 100 players...half of me believes him but it's probably equally tactical, in terms of the priority pick and hoping to reduce his worth, as it is factual.
