I guess I was just questioning why one of these outcones being tied to ladder position was OK while the other one wasn't.
I'm not saying the academy bidding system is perfect either jackess .
No, for the purposes of the FA system a mid first round pick is immediately after your first round pick. It could be 2, it could be 19 or later.Except that a mid-first round pick is 9 or 10, not 4.

Our midfield obviously lacks depth right now, but I don't think it will in the future. For that reason, if it's unlikely that we'll get a KPF with that first pick I wouldn't mind us trading for a more experienced player. I really like the idea of doing a trade like the one you've proposed, but I don't think Sumner is the sort of player we should go for. I'd go for someone with versatility and an ability to win their own ball. Perhaps Luke Russell + Gold Coast's compensation picks this year and next year for our pick 4. Those picks would be after Geelong's pick this year and IIRC after the whole first round next year. Adding an 18yo is unlikely to improve depth now and I don't think it will be an issue in the future, so trading the pick is a good way to go imo.I'd be disappointed if we came out of this year's draft without a midfielder. I know Dawson is "potentially" a mid and guys like Cutler and Taylor have midfield potential but our midfield stocks still lack depth IMO. And I guess there's part of me that worries about putting too much faith in Aish sticking around (although I acknowledge that I hope that we're not drafting on the assumption that he's leaving!). I recognise that we've got a midfield cohort coming through the Academy next year but, geez, we've all seen a drop off from the age of 16/17 to 18 for the Qld guys. Proud was arguably the second best midfielder in the country at 16. It would be a punt IMO to rely on those stocks developing. If nothing else, we're 12 months away from having Keays on the list and potentially another 3 years after that before he hits his peak (if he does).
If do end up effectively locked out of the 2nd-4th rounds due to our Academy and F/S selections, then it really does restrict our drafting flexibility. Perhaps it is a nice problem to have (particularly a bunch of guys draw high bids from other clubs). The concept of trading down our first pick for two lower selections certainly gives us greater flexibility on draft night. The Gold Coast trade increasingly looks possible. And I wonder if a trade with GWS like "Sumner + pick 20 + pick 22" would be something we'd offer up our first pick for.
I think Aish is more likely to develop into a full time mid than Taylor.Im on the same page as well. It is important that we lock in and grab those talls while they are available to us, even if that includes Wright after chasing talls for so long. ZOB and Crisp have shown a bit. Hanley seens to be transforming into a great rover type, Rocky has taken his game to A grade. We still have Rich and Redden to round out our top 4 mids. Zorko has shown something going through the middle, and Lester is pretty solid as mid #6.
Of the new players, Mayes and Aish I still see as more outside types, still part of the mid rotations but not full time mids. Im happy with this as I like having these two delivering the ball inside 50. Green might also be part of roatations but is simply too good up forward. Taylor I think will develop into a full mid, he was a full time mid in U18s and was a ball accumulator averaging nearly 30 touches.
I would love to add someone like Brayshaw, gets the ball, good off both feet and strong inside. I think he is a great type to add to the team. As ive said before, it will be interesting to see how highly the club rates Andrews and Hammelmann as talls and if we had the choice of Wright or Brayshaw who we would take. The club certainly still wants another high quality mid.
On NRIS Crackers reckon Blues will sack Warnock this year, Dees may take him. If they do won't need Wright.
Being dumped in favour of Cameron Wood.Gawn's looking alright as a ruck/forward as well so that probably has some merit. I do think the Dees want one more KPF though so it depends how they rate Wright.
Surely the Blues will get something decent for Warnock regardless of form if they want to move him on (which I think they may well do) - he's a solid tap ruck, a giant bloke (206cm/104kg), has nearly a hundred games under his belt and a few years left in the tank. Is he out of contract?
The Blues wouldn't mind moving a few places up the draft to have a ping at one of the KPPs on offer either I'd wager.
There's a reason why Warnock's value at the trade table is zilch. Wayne Carey did not mince any words when he was assessing Warnock.Gawn's looking alright as a ruck/forward as well so that probably has some merit. I do think the Dees want one more KPF though so it depends how they rate Wright.

That's the point, clubs will pay for nice shiny and glittery wrapping. However when they open the package their in lies the reality.Hampson was deemed to be worth a second rounder though. Someone would give something for Warnock - you'd think surely less than that, but I don't think he holds zero currency. To be honest it's Carlton so I'm not fussed either way![]()
Yeah, I thought Close was probably the least impressive young tall last night and yet he's probably shown the most as a forward over the course of the season. We have options, which is probably more than we could say two or three years ago.I was of nthe opinion that Freeman got a game as much to see his potential, so as to decide our draft strategy. After last night I would be quite comfortable to go best mid/kick. Brayshaw is no.1 for me.

Merrett also contested a few ruck contests. Not sure what the distinction was, but Merrett was in there at a centre bounce and Close was in there in the forward 50.Noticed Close was the back up ruck last night too. He doesnt seem to play as well when he is 2nd ruck. When you have 3 key forwards playing, and 2 of them kick 7 between them it doesnt matter if the other one hasnt got on the scoreboard.
A few times, it looked as though Martin didn't contest a forward ruck contest but instead stood a kick away on the defensive side of the footy. Perhaps it is the structure that we'll see when Leuey returns.Merrett also contested a few ruck contests.
