The whole conversation on the couch showed a lack of understanding especially by mike Sheehan about depression as an illness.

My take was mike was like ' Mitch Clarke is a good footballer, he's had a year out, he must be better now from his 'bad feelings', someone would be interested in picking him up, makes it hard to believe melbourne delisted him as they'd love hike back on their list right now'.

No mention of a source saying he was interested, no mention if he is playing footy of any kind in Perth (where they did say he was living again), nothing. And after every Sheehan sentence Jason dunstall chimed in with a face saving 'his health is the most important thing' or 'he hasn't said he is interested' or 'for someone to pick him up he'd have to nominate himself for the draft'.

As someone who knows someone with depression it was an awkward conversation to watch because Sheehan obviously doesn't understand it and basically said all the wrong things quite tactlessly.

Mental illness in the workplace needs to be managed and to be frank I'm not a 100% confident we have the professional resources to do it at the moment. I am confident the good intentions would be there based in my knowledge of off field staff but I'm not sure we have the resources just yet. (Although we should)

The other point that makes this all kind of moot is that from my understanding of things mentioned on this board, Mitch left Brisbane in part to escape some pretty difficult and delicate personal circumstances so I seriously doubt he would be interested in returning.

Actually it shows a lack of understanding about depression as an illness.

Yeah you're right, apart from my exposure to depression through multiple close friends and family members, I am no expert on depression. I don't have an opinion on it, I am especially not going to get into an argument about depression on a football thread with you mate, I wish him all the best with his recovery.

I do have an opinion and consider myself an expert on football though, which is what we were discussing, and IMO - the way he and his management handled his football decisions in the last 2 years has been poor.

Decision making, motivation and depression all come from the same area of the brain so it would be safe to assume that someone who has clinical depression wouldn't be able to make the best decisions.

Yep fair call. All I can do as someone who looks and has opinions on Football is judge someone on their football career, if his illness was something that was responsible for the way he left Brisbane, the way he seemed almost completely absent from the MFC and his eventual departure, all whilst they are banking on him in such a huge way, then his management, health professionals, the club doctor and advisers let him and Melbourne down in the instance.

That would only be magnified by the fact things are starting to point toward the predictable inevitability that he will play at freo or Westcoast next year, which IMO has been on the cards the whole time.

That is my opinion on this particular football situation.

Having an opinion and choosing to express that opinion are not the same thing.
Food for thought.

I must admit to being a naive in this area but i thought that all AFL contracts now had a "Mal Michael" clause built into them for players who retired and then decided to rejoin the league?

This does not mean much at all.

Ok.

Mate - what makes you the all seeing eye? what are you credentials on this issue?, .. there is as much evidence suggesting its the 'hush-hush' nature of the illness and the fact no discussion can be had around the person or their conduct is the reason those suffering end up feeling alienated?

Clearly the 'Expert on football' comment is tongue in cheek, meaning I feel I am able to have my opinion on football in contrast to my ability to discuss depression, thought you would know that given your expert wit that's always on display and adds so pleasantly to this forum.

Don't turn this into some 'high and mighty' moral debate - I have an opinion on his conduct during his football career, and I don't see why I should be unable to express it on a football forum.

I'm a psychologist actually.

But I can appreciate that you have an opinion. Expressing it and getting sooky when people rightfully slam it is another story.

Gawd.

You can have an opinion- that doesn't mean other people can't point out that your opinion is wrong and that you're making yourself look stupid.

You also may have asked the wrong person what their credentials are...

I don't need you are anyone else around here to tell me I 'look stupid' mate, I am happy for people to disagree with my perception on Mitch's football decisions and if they would like to explain or include elements of his illness and how or why that has contributed, that's also fine.

but I don't need to schooled on the sensitivity's of depression or to be called ignorant.

Shit your a psychologist?, no way. I am actually shocked at that given the way you try to put people down (not in this instance, but generally) and play repetitive mental games with posters on here. This particular topic aside, I honestly find that alarming. What do they say about you in your books?

That I'm a top dude

I am unable to express my opinion on depression, because I don't know anything about it, really. People might laugh at me if I say things like 'depression is a lot like the measles'.

Which is totally unfair. My freedom of speech is being impinged!
