Not sure if anyone else saw it but the bloke on future stars with Hutchy is one of the people that helps figure out compensation for free agents that leave and he said they potentially have the power to give mid first round compensation, it doesn't have to be directly after their first pick or end of first round. That would be extremely good for us and could very well land us Mccartin at pick 4 which would be perfect!!

I suspect that the issue is the 'materially anomalous result'. I mean, if Franklin going for pick #18 or whatever it was doesn't fit that criteria, you'd think the bar is pretty damn high. Not sure when it's meant to have effect.
Possibly it's to stop clubs from finding a way to rig the compensation system: like one club offering a whackload of money to an average FA from the bottom team that results in pick #2 being created, and then that pick being traded back to the original team cheaply.

Like IM said though, if 19 for Buddy isn't considered materially wrong then I am not hopeful with Frawley.

Yeah, but who's to say all information is available? I mean they don't necessarily draw a picture of how they arrive at the compo value and therefore 19 might have been the downgraded value after they decided pick 1* wasn't a fair payment to a club in Hawthorn's position.
*Or whatever pick was first calculated.

Even if the Panel recommended Melbourne get a pick in 9-15 range the AFL would likely just say go with Pick 3, that way they get a sort of priority pick without the label on it.
Yeah, but they don't deserve it though. I bet Melbourne offered a undervalued contract, in terms of money wise that would force Frawley into FA. They did not even put in the effect of convincing Frawley to stay, like Port did with Boak. This is a calculated move by them to get pick 3. That is what really annoys me. Last time I checked us, Port and Bulldogs were in a similar position and we are doing fine now, considering the lack of high draft picks in comprised drafts we had to endure through.

Free agency compo is supposed to be less than what a trade value is at the same time. If Frawley was in the draft, what would be the first realistic pick used on him? Maybe GWS ?
Mid first round would still be fair in my eyes if you factor in the request for a priority pick.
I'm not convinced Melbourne 's recruiting team have hit the balance right in what they prioritise in draftees. They have bren picking players with high ceilings but fail to develop them. Mid first round is where they can pick a more complete footballer who has maybe a not so high ceiling, but is a real chance at improving their side straight away.
They need to worry about gaining some mid table mediocrity first instead of gambling.

Asking for the PP and the loss of Clark will probably ensure they get top compensation. Easy out for the AFL to give them something without actually admitting to it.
FA compo should take into account the standing of the player at their current club, b&f finishes and contract amount. Rich clubs poaching average players for big money and clubs getting higher draft picks than the player is worth is silly.

on the flip side his contract amount at Melbourne is one reason he is an unrestricted not restricted free agent and MElbourne are being 'screwed' there because they front loaded his contract and this year he isn't in the top 25% of their list wage wise. so any formula can be unfair to any party based on specific circumstances.
Matt Panos seems certain to get another look this year. He has reinvented himself going from a slightly undersized KPF to an inside bull. He picked up the medal in the SANFL GF for Norwood on the weekend with 28 disposals and 12 clearances.

Just to put things back on track but the Saints have in some small way shown their hand I believe in picking Petracca at 1 with an article on AFL.com

...and I'm about 99% certain that the Dees will get the top compensation pick, because that way the AFL gets to help them out without being seen to help them out (again), obscured by their mystery compensation formula. Just smacks of how the AFL likes to go about things.
After cruising through some highlight tapes I am a big fan of Jayden Leverde, superb athlete and knows how to use that athleticism, weaving through traffic and running hard into space..
would be a great link-up player for us with only Paparone, Mayes and Bewick really capable of playing the roving link man role atm..
Angus Brayshaw has an AFL ready body and moves well but didn't see what all the hype was about, Connor Blakely looked more rounded as an inside mid..
I really like Ahern and Pickett too, could use their outside run..
also hope we keep a 2nd/3rd round pick to have a crack at Clem Smith.. put him in the back pocket and let him hunt his opponent all day, sign me up for that..
