He also only moved to Queensland at about 16 when maverick moved up there to play for Gold Coast. He might be wanting to be drafted back to a footy state (was his family from tassie?). Maverick now at saints - might ask to be traded there to play with him.
Yes tassie

Old Dog Panos hopes to be new pick

FORMER Western Bulldogs forward Matthew Panos is poised to re-enter the AFL system after transforming into a big-bodied midfielder and leading SANFL club Norwood to the 2014 premiership with a best-on-ground performance. Panos, who spent 2010-2012 with the Bulldogs but played only six NAB Cup games, has attracted the interest of six clubs ahead of this year's draft and he will attend the South Australia state screening. At 191cm and 90kg, the 23-year-old has modelled his game on Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury, Fremantle star Nat Fyfe and Sydney Swans onballer Josh Kennedy this year since changing his role. AFL.com.au understands premiers Hawthorn as well as the Sydney Swans, Collingwood, the Brisbane Lions and Melbourne have shown interest.

Only remember him by name.

Would be worth a pick with our 2nd if we have it. Seems to have had some good form, good age and size. Probably just needed those extra few years for it to click.

I believe he actually played a couple of games in the midfield for Wiliamstown in the VFL during his time at the dogs and did pretty well. Was always played as an undersized key position player at AFL level. I think he'd be worth a shot.

Can't remember if it was that article or another about Panos but apparently he has issues with hammies and they've been restricting his running too 11-12km/game. Could be a major issue at the elite level. That said apparently his kicking is elite and he finds the footy. Not sure that we'll have a suitable pick after academy/trades though.

Apologies if this has been mentioned. Are we a chance to get connor mcenna? Do we have a spot on our rookie list after getting Hanleys bro? It's reported 6 clubs have spoken to him.

On Panos, his lack of fitness will hurt him. Being mature age you want them to play now, and he wouldnt be up to that. Have to weight up how quickly he can get his running ability up. Given he wasnt a mid before hand, and was coming off hamstring injuries you would think a solid preseason could get his numbers up enough.

Would Panos be an up-grade on Lester? Lester also has the potential to be a big bodied in-side mid, but currently appears to lack the tank/strength/pace to break away from packs. I would prefer to stay with Lester and continue his development.

We know what we have with Lester. And what we have is good. With Panos there are too many unknowns.

Panos is filed away in my head as "Another BigFooty armchair recruiter darling that was top 30 in every phantom draft but ended up being a rookie that never amounted to anything".

Hard for me to get excited about him. Feels to me those comeback/reinvention stories rarely live up to the hype.

So a shoe-in for next year's The Recruit then huh?

It doesn't really matter if like Lester he is continuously dropped for no reason. I followed Lester closely this season because I had him in an ultimate footy team and I was really impressed, but he couldn't hold his place for some inexplicable reason. He'll be a good player if he's given an extended run.

Think it was just team balance with Lester. He is good inside but his outside game needs work. He can often win the ball but then cant dispose of it well enough for the team to make use of winning the ball. He is good as a 1v1 defender and can play up forward as well, so he has some versatility. I also think towards the end of the yeat we were looking to reward some effort from other players such as Crisp.

Considering our midfield could be -
1st rung Rocky / Hanley / Beams
2nd rung Zorko / Redden / Rich
3rd rung Lester / Aish / Taylor / Mayes / Green

Lester is great quality considering how far down the order he is. Being the likes of Aish, Mayes, Taylor, Green, Zorko, Beams, Hanley can play outside / HF positions he wouldnt have much problems getting time on ball though. Id hate to lose him TBH.

We had lost Redden and needed a clearance winner desperately late in the season. Our midfield depth was horrendous. Lester's omission flew in the face of team balance. Not sure how Crisp comes into it- they play completely separate roles. Anyway, Lester was dropped because of poor form.

Redden, Beams and Rockliff I'd imagine would spend about 70% of the game on ball next year, leaving the rest of time on ball for all of Rich, Hanley, Zorko, Aish, Green and Mayes. Lester doesn't fit in imo. He also isn't the quick midfielder we've been searching for. I give Lester very little chance of being best 22 in the near future with Redden, Rich and Beams coming back next year. I actually think he's a decent player, but he needs to dramatically improve in a similar vein to Levi Greenwood to be more than a depth player next year imo. He's very handy depth though.

Lester can break into our best 22. Don't forget he can play down back and up forward. You need to hold onto Lester because he has 50+ games of experience under his belt. For the future we need to hold on to guys like Lester, just in case one of our younger players decide to leave (e.g. Polec, Yeo, Docherty, Longer).
