I think with some it can be taught, others it just can't, and I personally see Pickett fitting in the latter bracket. I see shifting mindset as being an easier thing to do than expecting a massive turnaround in work ethic (especially if you're expecting work rate consistently!). Macrae for mine just came in with a, "See ball, get ball," mentality as a lot do. With experience that develops into the ability to find and win the ball without letting your man just run off you and do whatever they want. I cite Redpath's debut as an example here: in the first quarter he was lost at sea trying to hunt the ball and giving Taylor far too much room to move, but he improved in this regard as the game went on. Experience can tinker with offensive mindsets but I don't think it can make a player a two-way runner. Maturation does play a part but I think Pickett always remains that player that is ahead of the ball and gives only minute effort the other way. Still think he's a great talent, I just don't think he's the right fit for us.Yep I agree with what you're saying. I think that kind of thing can be learnt pretty easily and a lot of it is about effort, which i'm extremely confident the coaching staff could quickly rectify (ala Macrae).
For me it's very much out of Lever, Durdin, Wright and Laverde.
