Agree with trying to trade up with Melbourne, dropping down two spots and getting a player and one of our second round picks if we get a second should be a fair value. If we can get into the top three, we will get one of McCartin, Wright or Petracca, either way it will be a win-win with any of those three
The problem with trading up is a month ahead of last years' draft I'm sure someone suggested trading up to get Aish.
The rest is history

It's funny, this time last year Kelly was rated pick 4-6 and people didn't want him. Same with the 2012 draft.

A lot changes in this next month.

Agreed, but most of the players mentioned in some posts were all midfielders, who were all ranked around the same. With only Swallow and Whitfield being ranked that far ahead as the clear number one in recent years. Other mids around our picks were just as good or if not better in recent times, hence they all chopped and changed in opinions and rankings. Even I thought Aish wasn't as good as hyped. But this time around it is about getting a desperately needed key position player, and I doubt neither Wright or McCartin will slip out of the top five over the next month. Most likely even gone before our pick when the draft comes, so I am confident enough to say now that, that is what I think we should look into. Getting to pick 1 and Boyd was always going to cost way to much to move up into. We have the best chance in years to try and trade up into pick 2 or 3. Teams will be willing to sacrifice a couple of places in the order for players and extra picks, so cannot hurt to test the water and see what teams are willing to do/want in return. Have to keep open minded about these things. What goes on in previous drafts should not stop one for being bold

Pick 6. Western bulldogs - anyone but wright, McCartin, Durdin, petraca or Brayshaw.

am i missing something? why are people presuming melbourne will get a priority pick? If melbourne get another pick in the top 5 for frawley its frog shit if you ask me !

Foster seems to be going alright as of late! What sort of a forward is he?

I think he will be handy, but more of a 2nd to 3rd forward. So not quite our savior, but can provide a marking option up forward. Going by some peoples comments, still has some things he does need to work on though. Worth using a pick on him in my opinion, as with forwards taken late, some gems have been found over time. And he does have good potential to work with and develop

Is there a chance McCartin slips, honestly he really hasn't impressed me that much when I've seen him. Doesn't scream number 1 pick to me, and if I had the choice between McCartin and Wright it would be Wright every day of the week.

You are a god judge , I feel exactly the same re McCartin. Just hoping the saints take him.

The diabetes is an issue that could potentially scare one or two clubs off. It wont be a huge problem for him to manage but #1 picks get analysed so closely, this could cause him to drop a spot or two.

my biggest concern is that he is pretty short for a KPP and my personal opinion is that his area of strength in contested marking won't be to his benefit when playing on taller defenders who can simply reach in for a spoil

he is gifted at ground level to, something that isn't often talked about
he reminds me so much of a poor mans Jarryd Roughead and you'd still pay a decent pick for that in a pretty even draft :D

This is a fair point. Pick 1 always going to cost overs. But this year we only need to move from Pick 6 to Pick 3 to get us there (top KPF). Might not cost that much. Melb want to load up with mids, they get first choice at pick 2 anyway, our pick 6 and we give them the Higgins compo pick. Maybe?

It could work, Demons, Saints and Lions are all teams that need extra picks. Hence you would think one or two would be comfortable enough to drop back two places to pick 5 as it is not much of a sacrifice at all, unless you want a key forward and midfielders and defenders run deeper (until it happens, I'm not worried about Frawley) But I would give them one of our second round picks assuming we get an extra one which could do it alone, and possibly throw in a player as well. You can tell Brisbane look to be extremely active in trading and drafting this year by the number of cuts they have made already, but they sit way to high to bother moving up one place when our targets may be gone. The Saints will not budge, Melbourne looks like our best bet, and most likely getting Wright

I would try and trade up our second round pick as well, grab a key forward with the first pick and a key defender with the second. This is where players like Cooney and Minson would be useful (assuming they are on the trade block) Or fringe players as well

To bad we couldn't do draft day trading like the NFL :p Will happen one day, along with the trading of future picks

Rumour is we're really wanting to draft players we believe would be able to play next season

heard from JMac when talking to a scout/s
If that is true then I'd imagine we'd be into players from the state league late (hopefully not another SA known for kicking). Or some of these kids who have played league footy already like Hislop, Drummond, Grace, Hanson etc late in the draft.

We should get Dillon Viojo-Rainbow. He'd be a colourful addition to the squad.

That's my contribution to this thread done.

could really mean anything, like kids with a big tank or big bodied or both

Drummond has apparently played some VFL to, for Richmonds squad?

but yeah, this is another reason I keep mentioning Drummond

I think Viojo-Rainbow would be a decent get, but he doesn't seem to have his name bob up enough
Menadue got a mention in the local paper about his performance, looks a good size
would be happy if we took him in the 2nd round

VR I would be to, ditto Ellis :p
silly paper said Laverde did play though, because it talked about how Laverde and Duggan were trying to lift their side
might have meant Menadue

Late in the draft I think we'll go for a mature body

I'm beginning to wonder if there is some panic down at Whitten Oval after a disappointing year.

Rumours of getting Cazboult and now AFL ready draftees for next year makes me wonder if a blowtorch has been applied to the coaching staff.

If so, it won't lead to an optimum outcome.

I definitely agree, but just remember they're rumours. The AFL ready draftee one may hold some merit, but didn't we technically do that last year? Bontempelli in hindsight would've been ready from day one, ditto Honeychurch, and Fuller was a mature age recruit that didn't work. So maybe it's not exactly what it says, in that it's strong bodies ready for next year, but that we're looking for people who can come in and play straight away like Bontempelli.

As for Casboult, well we're linked to absolutely every KPF, so not much merit in that as of yet.

I definitely thought the same and hope we will stick to the best available players at our picks

we've apparently interviewed Lever already and I'm not sure how he'd be ready for next year
but I didn't think Bontempelli would be ready to play this year either, or even Kade Kolodjashnij for the Suns

the vibe I got from it, was that we weren't really interested in long term project players
like Zeph Skinner..
