We are the children of the night. (Cue song reference)

Also Herald sun please stop and not talk up Langford please I want him or Menadue at our second please.

Would absolutely love Langford, especially if Wood does leave. We just need marking power all over the ground and he would bring that. Would probably rather Menadue though but I want both :(. Hopefully we can hit the draft with at least 2 second rounders. Wright, Menadue and Langford would be so good.

This attitude has already shown to not work. Traded for McDougall. Drafted L. Jones. Maybe we should have stuck in for Dawes or Jesse White.
Nope, both mediocre and not helping their respective sides one iota.

We need quality. Banking on two metre Pete with our first pick and hopefully Reece McKenzie later in the draft.

I said mediocre not cr@p

And we ain't gonna get quality do we must go for option b

2-3-4 good players as opposed to 1 very good

I don't accept medocrity. Neither should the club. But to humour you, who do you propose we get?

Who says we aren't going to get quality? We're almost certain to have a highly-rated KPP at our first pick. Hopefully Wright but Durdin and Lever are also there.

DURDIN

Pros

-Ability to mark the ball at its highest point
-Overhead marking
-Good field kick
-Strong leap and athletic ability

Cons

-Inconsistent
-Will need a few pre-seasons before we see his body fill out
-Looks much more suited to defense then attack

MARCHBANK

Pros

-A Strong mark, both contested and uncontested
-Good skills around, good not great
-Very Athletic
-Late Birthday (?)
-Solid build

Cons

-Injury history
-Lacks height of other KPPs

GODDARD

Pros

-Very solid at nullifying his direct opponent
-Big Strong Frame
-Good mark
-Fair skills (currently)

Cons

-Very Inconsistent
-Looks more comfortable as a defender

LEVER

Pros

-Can provide some rebound
-Strong intercept marker/spoiler
-Decent skills with the ball in hand
-Reads the play real strongly

Cons

-Very light frame
-Lacks a little height to play on the taller KPFs
-Coming off a serious injury

any help? Lever reminds me of Mackie/Maxwell, Durdin a bit like Henderson/Carlilse, Marchbank like Brian Lake or Fevola (with his marking), can't think of one for Goddard, maybe Brown from Collingwood?

really appreciate your efforts Dav1d. it's exciting because i think our biggest KPP draft need is in the back half...

from your write up and others (and having seen very little of any prospects this year) i think lever may be the best player of the group. main issue is that he's unlikely to hold down CHB. evn if he is 'just a tall flanker', our list isn't exactly flush with tall, classy rebouding defenders. he projects as the player that is most likely to impact games of this group, with his ability to intercept and provide rebound. high character kid and leadership qualities add to the appeal.

the more i hear about durdin and goddard the more i like. goddard sound like a lump of a kid, with enough athletic ability and size to cover both hawkins and carlisle type forwards. sounds like a dependable KPD, and while this isn't especially sexy - it's vitally important. durdin sounds a gem at CHB with good skills and a high ceiling.

would love to trade into first round ~ 10-15 to get goddard, but don't fancy he's actually slid as far as BF posters would suggest. would then take lever as the best player at 5 and half back line is looking solid. if we're not in a position to draft goddard, then pick 5 is between lever and durdin (to hold down CHB). i'd still suggest lever as the more complete player would be the option at 5.

And pavlich Johnson Dawson McPherson Clarke and sandilands
2 of those are ruckman, Pav & McPharlin are the same height as Stringer & Macrae, Johnson is 195cm but plays as a sweeper most of the time & Zac Dawson is Zac Dawson.
You don't always have to argue M.D. besides Freo didn't win a flag so your point still stands.

to be honest

I don't want many more players under 183cm unless they're super gifted

we absolutely stink at general marking around the ground and that needs to change
and a decent place to start would be through the draft
not the only area from improvement obviously
but helps a hell of a lot if we can mark the ball and hold onto the ball rather then turning it constantly into a scrap

Agree with drafting under 183 only one I would even bother looking at is McLean because he has been known to out mark blokes who are in the 190's, is very skilled and is a genuine match winner.

Mayve he has been reading KM phantom. He has got McKenzie in the first round which is about 5% possible. Shouldn't be taken until second or maybe even third if these rumors regarding having mental demons is correct.

What mental demons are those?

Seems be a on the little slow side regardless. His lateral movement looks ok, but his straight line speed might put recruiters off.

He fits the mould of a gorilla. Type of player would be handy if with an athletic tall like Jaksch

Of course key position players are an important part of most team's structures. To say they are needed is just an empty blanket statement.
West Coast lost the grand final by a kick in 2005 with Ash Hansen as their only key forward. Their key defenders included Travis Gasper...
Sydney had 185cm Leo Barry and 190cm Craig Bolton in their key defensive positions on the day.

Plenty of grand final and premiership sides have poor-average key position players but there are none that don't have a great midfield.
Very very true.
By next season we will have a midfield capable of challenging for the lower reaches of the 8

my favourite is Lever though and he may slip, but I think he could go the other way and go higher
which is one of the few ways we could possibly end up with Wright

but like I said to doggies, not sure how his injury has affected him and said that to Brett Anderson earlier in the year
the combine will be very interesting, just to see how Lever goes
Lever seems to fit our personality requirements better than most who will be around our pick.

Actually I guessed the exact structure of our last draft without mentioning player but every pick went exactly as I thought it would go.

You take out the holes that will help you the most in the short term (inside midfield/General forwards/utilities, KPD) (can not be competitive without a resenable defence and ability to win the ball in the first place) before long terms (KPFs, outside mids, any other holes) (can not go higher without skills and a high KPF) do it in the wrong order and go to say hello to Melbourne's losing margins.

Just to clarify:

Hodge and Mitchell appeared before Roughead and Franklin

Bartel, SJ and GAJ came before Tomahawk and Pods.

Hawthorn loaded up with picks in a draft similar to the one we are about to have. Wouldn't suprise me if we did the same and go for a superdraft of talls and speedy outside players. Actually I am beginning to expect it.
I feel like the holes on our list have been present for the past 4 seasons.

Every year on bigfooty..

KPD + KPF
Skillful mid
Rebounding defender

Can someone tell me how we are not looking at Reece McKenzie???

I think it is partly to do with him not being good enough to take with our first pick. But if he is there at our second (or Higgins compo) I'd hope we are looking - depening on who else we draft/trade.

I'm liking this Two Meter Pete talk.

Big burden on young shoulders if we manage to get him, though. It ain't easy being 6'7 wearing the red, white and blue.

As for McKenzie, he's as slow as a wet week and from all reports, a big crybaby. I wouldn't be against picking him up if he fell to our second, though.

Just a few rumors that he has struggled to cope with the pressure of what people are expecting of him this year. Might be a whole heap of crap but I'll still pass it on because it could also be true.

Ant_ Igloo ??

Would people be upset if we took Goddard with our first pick. I know he seems to have slipped down the order a bit, but seems to be a pretty dependable defender.
Slightly different question to the others on the talls in this draft. Would someone like to have a go at rating the top 5 or so talls in how ready they will be to playing round 1 next season.
