Saw Dalrymple speak to a small function before VFL GF. It's the first time I have heard him say publicly "we'll be taking best kid available regardless of their height, and try and address other areas during the trade period".

This tells me that if Dal/JMac think a tall KPP is not a lock. And if there is a mid that they rate higher than a tall defender/forward they will pull the trigger. The combine results might just tip them over.

I was in that same function :)

That's a sure fire way to stay down forever. "Best available" is what got us in this position in the first place.
.

Flip side is Tim Walsh, he was the next best rated tall. Just not a top 10 pick

Trading up is for expansion teams reducing their lists, and for damn fools. We'll get a ripping young talent at 5/6.

If wright doesn't have that fire inside, I'd pass. I want a team of diehards. That's why I'm just not that fussed on jaksch. Just don't know how bad he really wants it

Yep. The impression I got was that we will not trade up. Dalrymple did mention that they were a bit disappointed the Wright was a late withdrawal from the TAC GF with a knee as they were looking forward to seeing him on the "big stage". But gave nothing away.
bluffing? We have to go for Wright! :D

Question for the draft watchers. Is Wright a chance to be a genuinely dominant key forward or is he really a ruck man who can pinch hit forward??
Work with his Dad. His preference is to be known as a forward who can pinch hit in the ruck. Dogs still extremely keen and a few weeks back was told he is our number 1 target. Not sure if thats still the case yet obvious right up there. Would love a melbourne club and Doggies impressed him.

I'd say Wright is our number one, just if he's off the board we'll go next available.

After messing around putting names to picks in the first four rounds of this draft I came up with this as a possible draft. We do pretty well... 4 players 190cm or greater...

First round: Peter Wright (203cm KPF/Ruck)
Second round: Kyle Langford (190cm Utility)
Third round: Zaine Cordy (192cm Defender)
Fourth round:
Caleb Daniel (168cm mid/fwd). Now let's see the world burn. Was looking for a small fwd because we don't have a high level small apart from dahl and... easily the best player there.
Fifth round: Jayden Foster (194cm Key Position Forward)
Sixth round: upgrade Lin Jong

168cm... thats very short. Libba Snr was even shorter i think, but you have to be something special to succeed in the afl at that hieght, and those types don't come around so often. It isn't fair, but it's just how it is. not sure aout that one Wizard

I agree with u there, but that also means 7 players have to come off the main list, plus we will have to draft 4 new rookies.

Who are the 7 off?

Gia, Williams - retired
Higgins - for pick 27

Goodes, Howard, Young, ???

Pearce, Grant and Fuller would be unlucky after years ruined by injury, not sure if anyone else is in the gun...

I would move Pearce to the rookie list

Some believe (especially South Australians) that Daniel is at the same level as Petracca, kid is a gun. Only thing that holds him back is that height if he was even 5-6cm taller he'd be a first-second round pick no joke. I'm happy with it being pick 60 not any earlier. Depends on where Cordy falls to be honest if our last live pick was in the 4th then Daniel be it but if the pick was in the third then it would probably be McLean all players in the late draft are small most sub 180 (173cm seems to be the number) so I just put up the best player there.

Could also not get past Adelaide or Port's third (wouldn't be surprised if they jumped the gun)

He is certainly a chance. There is debate as to whether he is a ruckman or forward first but he can play both positions well and i think forward would suit him more. However he is no Boyd or Patton. He's a massive unit and as such that means he dominates at the U18 level simply due to his size but he hasn't taken over as many games as Boyd or Patton did. He doesnt have that level of aggression to take control of a match through sheer willpower. But in saying that he is a smart forward, knows how to lead, knows where to position himself and is a booming kick. Certainly has all the tools to become a power forward but might take a bit of time. He's a no-brainer at pick 5. Would i trade up for him? Probably not for most clubs but for us who are in need for a power forward i would bite the bullet and ensure we get him

Agree with most of this, except I wouldn't be trading up for him. I don't think he's the ideal forward for us to do that and he's not really head and shoulders above the rest. But like you said he's a no brainer if he's there at pick 5. Would be happy with Goddard if we can't get him.

Touk Miller is small, David Rodan look alike but a better user. He was a gun yesterday. On the small side but very good. I liked Matthew Jackson, he was number 7 for Oakleigh. Tallish mid/half forward. De Goey looked ok, but I think I still prefer Langford or Laverde of the taller mids.

No way the Pies won't have to use their first pick on Moore, he's a jet. We should nominate him and hope the Pies don't match it. He is probably the best tall in the draft.

Wright didn't play and I am spewing about it. I saw him the crowd and he's a monster! Oh well...maybe he didn't want to expose his form because he wants to sneak to the dogs!

I have commented on young Foster on another thread.

I work with Jackson's uncle, a few clubs have shown interest.

Do any of you have access to all past combine results, not just the top 10s?

Wright's traits excite on a lot of levels but history of many 200cm+ recruits in the top 10 worries me.

The two key things that have me confident on him is that phantom drafts have him at 3 seconds for 20m - elite for his size, and on the flip side he's ripping out ridiculous beep test numbers - and the most important factor is that both of these are occurring with him resembling an actual AFL playing weight over 100kgs.

This is very much unlike, as an example of a likely top 5 pick at the time, Ayce Cordy, who although looked incredibly fast and mobile for a big guy at 18, but lost a lot of that when he put on 20kg (as you do).

How do Wright's numbers compare to others in their draft year, and what weight were they carrying at the time? Kreuzer, McIntosh, Leuenberger, Tippett, Daniher, Ayce - how do Wright's sprints/beep tests/weight stack up?

I don't think the combine results are posted anywhere
Champion Data sometimes in the AFL Prospectus will sometimes mention players combine results though
Wright with back problems is the biggest concern for me, but our medical staff would check that all thoroughly

Plough seems to think we'll take Lever, with Wright gone
would be strange to see the Giants pick him up though..

GWS wont Pick Wright. They have Mumford/Lobb and Phillips as rucks. Boyd/Patton/Cameron as tall forwards. They will pick a mid. Our only worry is if Saints pick McCartin at #1 which means Lions will probably take Wright OR if the Dees get pick 3 and then trade it to another club.

but GWS are strange

I'm still hoping Frawley doesn't get enough to warrant them getting an additional pick attached to their first

Only an inch shorter than Harvey, but doesn't look has quick

It's become increasingly likely we'll get our man - Peter Wright at pick 5 in this draft as a lot of phantom drafters have him falling in value due to his lacklustre finals performances and Lever increasing in value due to his professionalism in his rehabilitation and on field leadership skills. I was confident Higgins would walk a couple of months ago and now I'm not so sure. I really hope he does and we get a second round pick for him to use on securing Jaksch.

Here is my perfect scenario come trade and draft time:

Higgins walks, we receive pick 26.
Trade pick 25 to GWS for Jaksch.

Draft:
Pick 5: Peter Wright
Pick 26: Jordan Cunico
Pick 42: Oscar McDonald
Pick 60: Zaine Cordy
5th round: Jayden Foster
Rookie upgrade: Lin Jong

Rookie:
1st round: Dillon Viojo-Rainbow (some have him drafted in the 4th round, others rookie)
2nd round: Josh Glenn - 179cm 78kg, long accurate kicking defender.
3rd round: Brett Eddy - 194cm, 90kg, leading goal kicking forward for the SANFL.
4th round: Sean Tighe - 199cm, 94kg, ruckman in some good form for Williamstown.

Delist: Williams, Gia, Howard, Pearce, Young, Goodes, Austin, Redpath, Greenwood.

Whos Jordan Cunico?? Got any info on him?

If we were to lose Minno or Cooney, I'd hope to be able to trade into late first round and snag Menadue as well. Cunico and Menadue would solve our outside run and HBF problems in one swoop.

I'm not sure if I'm the only one, but I'd actually prefer Lever to Wright at this stage. Not the key forward we are looking for (though he could be), but he is the strand out high character guy this year and looking at the past few drafts, the standouts in that attributes (bonts and wines) are also turning out to be the best as a whole. Lever also plays with a level of aggression and intensity that I haven't seen in Wright. The acl is obviously a worry, but there are concerns on Wright's back too.

Your 'Perfect Scenario' was looking very nice indeed until I saw you include Redpath in your list of delistings.........Are you mad!!!!!

The problem I have with us missing on a KPF this draft is that the next two drafts are mid heavy and I surely hope we don't end up with pick 5 next year. I just can't see us drafting a decent tall forward in the next 3 years if we don't do it now. Lever would definitely fit and is my second choice, but we should be going hard at getting Wright first.
