Just on Petracca, what does he offer to our midfield? The only think we lack is leg speed, and enough elite ball use/more class and polish. Does he offer both of those? Or will we just be adding another big midfielder to our stocks?

I just think we should take the best available with our pick which atm I'm assuming will be around 5, I wouldn't mind Pickett if we can work out a way to get GC's two first rounders for our pick but not sure I'd want to spend a top 5 pick on him which is the same as Goddard (although he was my pick a few weeks back as he fills our biggest need). Petracca fits the mould of what the clubs been doing can throw him in the midfield, across half back or up forward and is a out and out machine, has ridiculously good hands and knows how to hit the scoreboard, certainly more than just a big bodied midfielder. I just feel you have the 3 big KPP's then Petracca/Brayshaw at 4/5 then the next 10 guys you could almost throw a blanket over at this stage, but i haven't been following avidly this year. Personally I'd prefer to just go get Patton :P

Edit - also what Wizard said, his a match winner.

Thanks guys :) I have been warming up to him for awhile now, just don't know him in depth enough as some on here would. Just going by the reports and the type of player he is. He was highly rated as one to look out for this season, last year

Yeah true, we need more players who can take the game on, and I don't think our midfield kicks goals often enough as it is. Just reading up on his profile, I like his size, already at the weight for AFL level, and I like how one of his strengths is contested marking, as I still think that is one of our overall weaknesses as well. Hopefully his disposal efficiency is good, seems to be listed as his main area of work needed. Won't complain if he does become of his comparison players in Wingard or Kennedy

If we do draft him, that would be another midfielder with some height, but not to tall, to go along with Macrae and Bontempelli (Freo mark II?) Just when many would have thought our policy was to draft a midfield of munchkins :p

Would be happy to take this guy and go for a forward with our second round pick, as outside of the Wrights and McCartins, you would think any forwards left between picks 10 and 30 would have a similar risk and upside, thus we could afford to overlook them in the first round. Have a feeling he will go to a team above us as well though, would definitely suit Melbournes needs as well

Imagine Libba, Smith, Pettraca, Wallis, Botempelli and Macrae. Now that would have to be just about the best young midfield on talent/potential in the AFL *drools*

I think this weekends game will be for the Christian Petracca cup :D

Anyone who plays the game the way Christian Petracca plays the game will add a hell of a lot to any future side. Similar type of player to Stringer i.e the type of player who becomes a fan favourite.

Can play any position on the ground, great football brain, excellent skills, kicks goals and loves to physically hurt the opposition etc. Not slow, either.

Interesting write-up. Not so sure about the 'once in a generation type of guy' call, however. He's a good prospect, but he's not a once in a generation player. And if he were, he's not slipping to us at pick 5+

It is an interesting write up and he starred again for metro. There are a lot of very good players not picked top 2 or 3 in drafts. I want us to get the best player with our first pick, I don't care if that player is a mid.

I watched the game all be it on TV and I couldn't take my eyes off the kid... He'd be a great pick up IMO

Also thought Goddard was good as well a lot to like and work with.....

Yeah i hate how that term "once in a generation" is just thrown around, Honestly though i wouldn't be surprised to see Petracca go top 3 even though the "Big 3" seem almost a lock. Brisbane/Saints are in dire need of a KPF to replace Brown/Reiwolt so McCartin/Wright seem to be the answer at 1 and 2. If GWS end up with pick 3 i wouldn't be surprised to see them take Petracca over Durdin. A top 4 pick would get us either Petracca or Durdin though! Petracca to me looks like one three potential elite mids (Brayshaw/Heeney being the other two) but has alot more versatility and would be the one i would pick. I guess tomorrows game vs Melbourne will kind of determine if we get a 4-5 pick or a 5-7 pick since the bottom 7 teams are all very close to one another.

I know a few are very keen on Pickett/Duggan here is a quote from Emma Quale a few days ago on Pickett (interesting she says "possible no 1 pick") -

Jarrod Pickett (WA, midfielder)

Exciting, electrifying, exhilarating: get onto thesaurus.com and take your pick. It’s a pleasure to watch the speedy, skilful Pickett run hard, slice sides up and kick classy goals. Should be a very high pick, and is a possible No. 1 depending which team gets the pick.

Best available is a crock because best available will almost always be an inside mid

KPPs are always a risk but without them you are nowhere so you sometimes have to bite the bullet and just pick one. The real question is which year is the right year to take the plunge?

We've put it off so long we have to go now.

FWIW I think Goddard goes alright anyway. I have Durdin a fair way in front but I don't see Wright and McCartin being any better than Goddard.

Obviously watched Cordy pretty closely yesterday.

His direct opponent only touched the ball 4 times over the course of the day.

He started on Read who took a big mark in the goal square in the first few minutes but didn't touch the ball again until he was taken off during the second quarter. Cordy then spent a quarter on Rose who also only got one touch - a lead up mark on the wing. Cordy was briefly on Durdin and got lost in traffic that led to a Durdin mark over the top and a SA goal. Cordy was then back on Read who got a scrubby handball that Cordy tidied up and cleared anyway.

Cordy would also have taken 3-4 defensive marks (including one good contested one on Durdin 1 v 1).

He just doesn't do anything offensively at all.

Maybe thats all apart of the plan ;)

We've heard some pretty good reports on his kicking ability and rebounding before so hopefully he's just been focusing on his defensive stuff. Get to us a bit cheaper then do a Hunter :P

Eh if Wright, McCartin and Durdin are all gone at our pick I'd prefer to just get the best available. No point reaching for Goddard if the club rates him a 10-15 pick, if they rate him a top 7 pick then by all means pull the trigger but from what I've read/seen he seems to be a great 2nd tall option. Guys like Reece McKenzie should be around for our second rounder to address the need for a KPF, prefer to go the best available with our first rounder so we don't end up with another Howard saga of trying to address a need with that pick.

I've seen Cordy use the ball offensively many times. It seems like in the champs he's been focused on his defending. Might be similar to when we told Hunter to focus on his defensive work and tackling at the champs.

Anyone know when the full replays will be up, probably not for a while?

Loving Petrecca. Wouldn't be surprised if we liked him too, providing the best talls are off the board. We've heard a few times that our plan to counter GC/GWS is big mids, well Bonts, Macrae, Stringer and Petrecca isn't a bad place to start.

Yep and if you add Smith, Libba and Wallis to that you can see that we might be pushing forward with an edge of our own. Each good team has them.

1. Hawthorn draft pure kickers, they hurt you and you can't get it off them

2. Power run all day

3. GC have disgustingly talented players all over the field

4. we could have a team that just doesn't let you get the ball in the first place

Yeah it definitely seems to be our POD going forward, also versatility with the ability to switch players around into different positions is something else were looking for. You really are going to need something a bit different to compete with the ridiculous amount of talent gc/gws will have.

Do you think that a goddard-style lead up #2 KPF would be good to compliment jones + crameri?
I have always thought a big gorilla like cloke, patton etc would suit our needs more but I feel both Crammers and Jones do their best work close to goal, not saying we should choose Goddard, just wondering if his style of player is our best KPF fit?

Basically the question I am asking is, would you rather someone that plays like Travis Cloke, or Nick Reiwoldt?

I can honestly see the case for both of those types tbh. I guess it sort of just depends on where we see Jones playing full time, and also whose actually available of course. I'm still on the fence a bit with where I see Jones playing long term. I think he could be a fantastic CHF if he could just build a big tank, he seems to take all his big marks on the wing when he has space to run and jump, and I think he's pretty reasonable with ball in hand up the field. But I can also see the argument for playing him out of FF, big unit, good on the lead, great defensive pressure (when he's up and about anyway), can take contested marks, great set shot, decent at ground level around goals which is everything you want in a modern FF, he just needs consistency.

So for me I'd probably be happy with either and it just depends on whose available. Like i've said a few times now though i'd be rapt with getting a guy like Reid/Goddard to play CHF and leave Jones at FF. But hopefully when Redpath gets a go he shows something at FF and allows Jones off the leash to play as the CHF again and see how he goes now.

Ok i have a question for you draft watchers, the top 3 or 4 talls this year are coming across as a level below the guys in the same positions as previous few drafts
A hard question objectively but anyone want to have a go at rating these guys in order?
2012 Daniher, Jaksch, James Stewart, Mason Shaw
2013 Boyd, Hogan, McCarthy
2014 Wright, Goddard, Durdin, McCartin

Goddard is more of a second forward then a key forward. Do you think he will find a home in the backline, be better suited there? He seems to play his better football down that end in my opinion. Can see him floating along the center half back line, being that guy who takes those intercept marks and the occasion extra/free man kind of role.

How is his kicking?
