TASMANIA has ended the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships division two competition on a high with a 40-point win over Northern Territory at Simonds Stadium on Thursday.

Inside midfielder Tim Jones was a stand out, consistently collecting possessions with great speed, in his side’s 15.5 (95) to 8.7 (55) triumph.

The 181cm Jones gathered 21 touches in the first half, before finishing the match with a whopping 34 possessions in the shortened format.
Tasmania finished the three-game carnival with one win, while Territory remained winless.

Over-aged player Josh Fox looked dangerous in the ruck, taking several well-timed contested marks inside forward 50.

The 19-year-old key forward-ruckman, who stands at 197cm, amassed 25 possessions, 20 hit-outs, nine marks and a goal.

Fellow over-ager Josh McGuinness, a 189cm rebounding defender, played a pivotal role linking up on the counter attack from half-back for 26 disposals.

Nick Dodge, a 17-year-old forward who isn’t eligible in this year’s draft, showed he could be an attractive future proposition, booting two majors.

Dakota Bannister seized his opportunities up forward, bagging a game-high four goals.

Caleb Hislop, who missed the majority of last season after undergoing a shoulder reconstruction at the end of 2012, made an impact through the midfield, finishing with 20 disposals and five tackles.

Bottom-aged player Logan Reynolds, another who is ineligible for this year’s draft, showed encouraging signs across half-back and through the midfield, collecting 12 possessions.

Fellow bottom-ager, Jordan Hayden, showed plenty of class with an elite mix of speed and endurance, finishing with 22 touches and seven inside-50s.

For Northern Territory, over-aged player Abraham Ankers won his own ball in a determined display, collecting 16 touches and one goal in a team under constant pressure.

The small midfielder, who stands at 173cm, may be short in stature, but is tough and hard at the ball with a strong work ethic.

Medium defender Errin Wasley-Black, who missed out on being drafted last year, was a solid contributor across half-back with his penetrating left-foot kick, finishing with a team-high 20 touches.

Sam Godden showed composure with 17 disposals in a defence that was under constant pressure, while Michael Tilmouth-Turner was kept quiet for six possessions.

Marcus Hamilton (15 disposals) looked dangerous up forward for Territory with three majors, while Zane Carter was another who tried hard for 15 possessions.

Michaelis McMasters (eight touches) displayed his electric burst of speed, as well as a long penetrating kick inside the forward line.

Victorian-based ruckman Duom Dawam, who plays for the Western Jets, showed off his strong leap for the Territory, but was kept relatively quiet for 20 hit-outs and three touches.

Willy Rioli, a cousin of Hawthorn’s Cyril, missed the game due to a calf strain.

Hopefully that pushes him up the pecking order a bit and gets a tall to slide out to both our clubs.
That'd be nice. Fortunately only Brisbane and St Kilda of the clubs below us really have that need for a KPP. But clubs seem to select them anyway.

St. Kilda
Brisbane
Carlton
Melbourne

all have a need for KPP and could mount a decent case for taking one early.

Sounds like Dawam got absolutely monstered by Fox who took 9 marks overall 4 contested marks within forward 50 o_O hence I think he is a Forward who can rest in the ruck rather thna the other way round, at least at AFL level.

I suppose Melbourne have lost Clark and look likely to lose Frawley, actually.

I'd forgotten Carlton were below us.

lets just hope Melbourne doesn't let Frawley go
 I think I'd be pretty shitty if they took the best midfielder and best tall!

I will watch the games probably next week
just so tired of football at the moment :(

I honestly reckon Saints, Carlton, Melboune and GWS all have just as big needs for mids/defenders. All of those teams should just be going best available (of course that probably will be Wright/McCartin for the lowest teams but who knows they might see someone like Petrecca with more potential)

Brissy is a no brainer for a KPF though, who knows might win a few more games to finish the year off though.

St Kilda need to replace Riewoldt with a key forward.

Brisbane the same with Brown.

Melbourne need to replace Frawley/Clark - Hogan is there but they'll look to add someone else also.

Carlton .. well.... we need to replace just about everybody, I think we could go either way at our pick depending on whos on the board still.

As long as there's a need for Jarrad Waite at both ends of the ground, Carlton need to get a KPP and get games into him.

I think they'd love the likes of Petracca or Brayshaw too. Would be ridiculously good for them if they had a compo pick this year.

Waite is finished - so I take your point.

If we manage to secure a trade for Jaksch (as most clubs will be trying to), then I can see us getting one of Petracca/Brayshaw.

Is he? He turned out pretty well against us, although admittedly we'd lost our 2 best tall defenders. He sustained an injury on the weekend too, I suppose.

Jaksch would be fantastic, has the capacity to develop at either end. Just have to back the club's program in. Which of Petracca and Brayshaw would be your preference?

I think you guys will finish ahead of us. Our most 'winnable' games in our run home are Richmond at the G and Melbourne at Etihad. Apart from that, the rest of the teams we play are probably still in finals contention (West Coast being the lowest on the ladder of those teams). You guys have St. Kilda and GWS from memory, both pretty winnable.

The one reason we may go midfielder as our first pick is if we commit to Hammelman as our second or third round pick, and we really rate someone like Weller (less homesick factor) or a Brayshaw/Petracca.

That being said, I suspect we'll go tall with our first pick.

They're hard to split for me at the moment.

I like Petracca slight more because of his contested marking and the fact that he can be an offensive weapon when playing as a lead up HF.

I like Brayshaw because he is a bull both inside and outside - and we could do with an Ollie Wines type around the contest (even though we recruited Cripps last year).

In my limited viewing of the both - I'd say Petracca is slightly ahead, he's also now the Larke Medalist.

I thought Brayshaw might've been the better fit for Carlton, but that was without considering Cripps. I'm rather impressed with Petracca, was a deserving Larke Medallist and the player I want if we don't pick up a tall (want Duggan too but seems unlikely, caught between our first and our second).

There's still so much class on the outside that I think Brayshaw would be an astute selection for the Blues. Again, I suppose it's about filling the greatest need with the best talent and then nailing the later picks. Maybe bringing in mature age talent for the bullocking midfield role. Who knows.

that part isnt true :p and fortunately there are some good kicking players that run hard both ways in this draft!

you forgot the obvious one though, tall midfielder; I believe that is how we'll go, because if they run hard both ways there is a chance they could also become a HBF ;) maybe even at both our picks

Yep. I agree.

I should have mentioned tall midfielders. I sort of took it for granted. Bontempelli could be a champion if he lives up to the hype of the last few weeks. If he does then that's one we've got away. Now we really need to find another one. One that the other clubs don't see. If we can have 2 true champions to build a side around, then we will present a formidable force in years to come.

I'm told that the locals at Eltham thought Bontempelli was a good footballer but nothing extra special; they were a little surprised he went so low. It wasn't until he played later in the middle for the Northern Knights that people began to take notice. But even then there were those who said he got lots of possessions against weak opposition. So in a sense, he was a hidden gem that we took the time to suss out fully. That's a big tick to our recruiting process. Given we might have pick 7 or so this year, we might need some luck in uncovering another hidden gem before other clubs get to them.

I'm all for a tall midfielder/defender as our first choice. I just hope that, amongst other things, he comes with a cool head and great kicking skills.

Truth be told - I wouldn't be unhappy with either!

In my humble and uneducated opinion Petracca is the better of the two... I see him capable of playing multiple positions on the ground and being really good at all of them......Good luck to the side that gets him I reckon (have I mentioned I hope it's us)
