Yeah I'd only be taking Ahern if you thought that he was capable of moving into the midfield long term, agree we have a lot of options for small forwards but I don't think it would hurt to add some more firepower up front, not that its a huge need but as long as he adds something different to the team in the midfield, which he probably does. Agree that it would be best if we downgraded our pick and then got him though.
from what i've seen he definitely is man. has improved markedly inside the contest

Yeah thats good then, don't think he would be taken top 10 unless people genuinely thought he could. Definitely sounds like one to watch, wish the AFL would upload the flipping u18s replays already so I could at least have a bit more to judge from :p

It's interesting - they both sound like the player we look at (especially Ahern, given we seem to weight rate of improvement highly) yet they're both at 181cm and we also seem to focus on taller mids (look at our last three first rounders - Macrae 188cm to 190cm now, Stringer 191cm to 192cm, Bonti 192cm as drafted).

Chances are the player we take (if we keep the pick - and I'm not convinced we will) is barely in top ten calculations as yet and they way the kids finish the season will determine who we take.
Yeah I really like the idea of stocking up with big mids, and ideally those guys would have another 5cm on them but we've shown were not scared to pick little guys too, I guess they weren't with high picks but if they think one of those guys is the best option for our list I don't think they would worry too much that they're not taller. I reckon we'd be spewing we can't get Petrecca, he sounds like every thing we'd love + more. Interesting to read that he got 7.90 I think it was in the agility test and 2.96cm in the 20m sprint, thats some crazy agility, Hunter smashed the test when he did it and he got 8.04.

also ^ a look into some of next years talent, will be kept in mind as well when selecting
could get a classy midfielder, two years in a row
so if we only got the one (think we need 2-3) there would always be next year :D

agree with also what Rahul said regarding Goddard

Interesting Rahul has Marchbank ranked at #24 seems it was updated yesterday as well. In comparison KM has him ranked at #11 and he hasn't updated it for a while so you would assume he will move up. Personally I'd have him in the 9-15 range, I'd prefer Lever though if we were going to use our first rounder on a defender.

Dogs recruiting criteria under the mccartneys:

1. Look long term. Who projects as the best talent available in 4/5 years time. Stringer, Macrae and bonti all prime examples.

2. On the improve - look for players that finish the year strong and are seen to "keep at it" throughout a long season.

3. Natural footballers - guys with vision and footy smarts.

4. Versatility - guys that can play in various positions on the ground at afl level.

5. Work ethic - guys that have a passion for the game work ruthlessly on their deficiencies.

6. Resilience/character - guys that are "good people" but that have a serious mean streak and killer instinct/desire.

Sooooo, if we're on the clock at pick 6 and wright, Durdin, McCartin, Brayshaw and petraca are all off the board, who ticks the boxes??

So if we have a hard-on for Weller, and he projects to go in the teens, what about a pick swap with GC - our pick 5 for their picks 11 and 13.

They are likely to favour quality over quantity, particularly if they have their eye on a player like Picket for instance.

ps. Could be sweetened with our 5 and 24 (or whatever our 2nd round is) for their 11 and 13.

The idea is we get our man Weller, plus we have upgraded our 2nd rounder - possibly to trade for that pesky KPF we never seem to get.

Word is the next Ryan Griffen is in this draft.....

Weller from Qld is our pic in this years Draft -I then spoke to a friend who looks after accademy in Qld and was blown away when he said Brisbane will find it hard to pass him his words where plays like Griffen and kids a leader........

If Weller is the next Griffen you would think Scotty Clayton would have the hots for him BIG time.
I wonder what the GC would be prepared to pony up for pick 6?

The whole "Weller is the next Griffen" is sensationally overrating him. Whoever is the inside source there is spreading the mayo thick.

the bloke clearly doesn't have an inside source. has been farting out rumours that never eventuate for a while on this board

Wunhym unlucky not to be mentioned in that next years top ten. Going to be a few Calder boys up the pointy end.

Umm Gold Coast want weller

Lachie Weller looks good but Griff was always top 3-top 1 his draft year, looks more like an Andrew Gaff type to me.

Daniel is a midget no thanks
Doesn't matter, if he can play footy.
Tony Liberatore is 163cm tall and won a Brownlow. Your namesake Nathan Hrovat is 175cm, Luke Dahlhaus 178cm, Mitch Honeychurch 176cm, Tutt 177cm.

We've already got a core of tall midfielders - Bontempelli, Stevens, Macrae, Griffen, Cooney. Being short shouldn't preclude a player from being selected. I'm not advocating we select him at all, I just don't think that should be the basis for not doing so.

Very short but reminded me of Boomer Harvey who has had a pretty handy career. I would be very surprised to see him go first round but he was head and shoulders better than his competitors in the televised games.

Will get flattened in the big time I don't think he will get drafted

I reckon he will struggle to get picked up

Chris25 linked this highlights video of Weller. Looks pretty impressive to me.

Beware the flashy highlights reel

What do you mean how else is 90% of BF supposed to decide who our recruiters should take and abuse them when they are overlooked ;)

its pretty likely next year we'll select a 'midget' though, there always seems to be a real short player that does well at the Champs to
could justify picking up every small player in the draft if you say Tony Liberatore was small and he won the Brownlow

do they really or are they just trying to mess with the other clubs? ;)

this is a problem I have with some of the BF hyped up players, there is still a lot of the year to go
everyone knows the AFL recruiters usually don't pick based on hype (Spencer White next Franklin )

its why players like Leslie, Lang, Cutler went a lot higher then the BF Phantom drafts predicted
and Lewis Taylor went in the second
even Jarman Impey didn't have a good game on tv but Port Adelaide still took him with their first

as for your question fronk, its a bit early to say; but I'd say Weller would be right up there...next Griff though, that would be a massive call
