we got to do something like this, gee those Collingwood are crafty ....

It's ridiculous - their network and their facilities are just insane.

I still acted surprised when we got Stringer, was genuinely surprised when we got Macrae
thought we'd have gone with Mayes, but then I remember where I saw Macrae
I was watching the Oakleigh v Gipp. Power game and know he tore that game up
had a good finals run actually that year and obviously good solid numbers in the U18s (think he was stiff not to get AA)

when the Jets have their finals, I'll be following how Duggan goes very closely
because like I said; kicked 3 crucial fourth quarter goals to scrape over the line in a final when his coach put him up forward
and put it on him to win them the game so that is at least one game

is a Bulldogs supporter and I heard he is one Jets player that has Doug Hawkins as a mentor o_O
Duggan is from Bacchus Marsh so it'd of been when Dougie was there

I read somewhere Duggan trained with us during the pre-season, probably part of the AIS program? along with someone else, he had an unusual name, Duwam or something?

AFL Under 18 Championships are on FOXTEL this Friday

Then Next Week

Langdon is number 2 yeah? looks the goods, also is that him running up the wing at 2:00 or is it number 7? can't really tell. If it is him, wow.

yes Langdon is 2
nope
that is Jason Castagna 7, Duggan is 9
he shepards for Brayshaw in the next play going the opposite way

Yeah Duom Duwam I think.

Video was up on our youtube. Think Cordy was also with them

I thought it would be interesting to compare some of the TAC cup stats for Liam Duggan and Josh Kelly when at the same age. I chose Kelly as comparison because he is someone who is highly rated and went high in his draft. Also, they're both renowned for being one of the top kicks in their draft and are similar in a number of ways in the way they play.

Kelly is actually almost exactly 22 months older than Duggan, so I had to go back 2012 to get stats for him when he was the age that Duggan is now. It's probably better to do this at the end of the year, but I'm bored now so I'll put up an early version now. We can do this again later when Duggan has played more games.

The comparison is far from perfect given the large number of variables involved (only 6 games each) and the limited sample size, but I do think it is interesting and is something worth pondering.

Josh Kelly (averages per game in TAC Cup up to July 2012)
Disposals: 19.2 (12.5 kicks, 6.7 handballs)
Marks: 5.2
Tackles: 3.3
Goals: 1

Liam Duggan
(averages per game in TAC Cup up to May 2014)
Disposals: 22 (13.7 kicks, 8.3 handballs)
Marks: 3.8
Tackles: 5.3
Goals: 1

Pretty even between the two. Duggan with slightly more disposals, and the two pretty much having the tackle and mark counts reversed.

Liked what I saw of Goddard on 360 tonight. Can any of the 18s watchers let me know if what I saw in consisten with what he puts out week in week out?

I'm not an 18s expert but by hell I will be after watching the kids run around around on Friday. I'll have opinions on all of them. I'll informed, baseless ones :)

this year Goddard has had a poor year, especially games where he is played up forward
the commentators and Kevin Sheehan talk as if he can destroy opposition key defenders when played in attack; he really can't

also they're very clever at putting together highlights packages of players, but unless you've sat and watched a player play a full game
they can be quite deceiving and it won't shock me with Goddards poor year if he still somehow made the U18 All Australian because
they love to put in the players they've been hyping up in the media

difference between Duggan and Kelly though is it was well known Kelly could run and run all day, I'm thinking if he tests well at the combine on top of everything else he is going to be a very tempting player to pick up :straining:

Chances of Hacksaw (I concede immortalmike) being snatched before our first pick? Not interested in Goddard at all. Probably depends who is bottom 6 material as to whether or not he slides big time. In form, all of St Kilda, Brisbane, Richmond, and Carlton could be interested, not to mention the Dogs.

the only club I could see doing that is Melbourne, maybe GWS

but if I was picking for them and all the decent KPPs were gone; I'd go Petracca or Brayshaw; pretty much ready to slip straight into their side
GWS/Melbourne would love that
just unlucky if Carlton/Richmond want him though
I could see Carlton going with Goddard though right after us and the Facebook WB page melting down

No kidding :p It doesn't matter who we select, they'll deem it as wrong.

Always makes interesting reading though, one way or another. Although I wish they had more material than 'get a key forward'. They'll demand we select one irrespective of their worth and either scream the house down because we didn't or complain that we did and he's not any good

how about

they'll say, we should have selected McCartin/Wright, even though they've likely gone before our picks....o_O
like last year, see peoples comments saying we should have used our pick on Tom Boyd

I did laugh at those comments - complaining that we didn't pick Boyd, or Patton, or Cameron. I'm convinced these people don't actually know the draft exists.

I'm almost looking forward to seeing what they come up with this year, haha. As well as being super keen on Duggan I can't wait to see what they have to say about us using our first pick on an 182cm player, if we do, given that they expect it to be used on a key forward irrespective of where he deserves to go in the draft :p

Saints: Wright
Lions: McCartin
GWS: Durdun
Melb: A Midfielder
Blues: Goddard
Us:

I can see us missing out on all of the top KPF and possible the KPD. Yes half of the teams need midfield help as much if not more, but key players are more rare. Unless we finish in the bottom five we may have to trade up. If we miss out, we could go for a Duggan or Pickett and try a forward prospect later on. But if we did pick Duggan or Pickett, watch all those bitter old supporters lose it, even though we could do with speed in the midfield and an extra link up player off halfback, they will ignore that fact and be screaming simple because we picked "another midfielder" aha

Saints: Wright
Lions: McCartin
GWS: Petracca
Melb: Durdin
Blues: Goddard

if Carlton indeed fall below us, I do hope they choose to take Goddard
if richmond fall below us they'll likely select Pickett/Duggan though

the good thing about both is they both have good clean foot skills
duggan might not be as fast as pickett, but duggan isn't no snail :D

We will only win 1 more game this year and finish bottom 3...

Saints-McCardin for sure-they have 2 Rucks
GWS-Durdin-need a CHB or will go Picket to add pace
Melb-Bradshaw because they need onballer
Melb-Wright-compo pick as Frawley will go to Hawthorne
Bulldogs-Picket we need pace and he is special.

So as you can see Melbourne finishing below us is a killer.......If we loose Sunday we could get Wright....hate thinking this way but god we need him bad

Going only on what others have written, I find myself hoping we get Duggan with our first pick. (Of course that can change). But I am wondering about the following -

Does he know how to find space? Does he seem to have time and balance such that he is a natural at getting clear, not just being a receiver who can distribute the ball well?

And can he win his own ball? Is he tenacious inside? Is he a contested mark? Can he win / neutralise contests against bigger opponents?

And finally one of the reasons for getting Bontempelli was because we could see enormous upside? What are we thinking about Duggan's upside?

Disagree with some of that.

1. We will beat Melb, GWS and St Kilda. Thats 3 wins, and I suspect we might get past the Bombers too.
2. Not sold on Wright at all, too tall to be a true FF (the only FF like that atm is Tippett, who can be really ineffective at times), and has a history of back issues. We could really use McCartin though.

i'd love to agree with you and i think we'll have one more very happy exciting fuzzy match for the year but we just can't get a consistent side on the park. our current injuries are the worst we've had and i think Melbourne'll trouble us. not enough running power in our midfield without coons and griff so we need a lot from Stevens and Hrovat through there and the young kids coming up from below and those that are in the team now can't be relied on imo. too young to back to be consistent. definitely hope i'm wrong though

We have 6 of our top team out

Roughead
Cooney
Griffen
Gia
Williams

and a few other handy guys Grant etc Melbourne are at full strength

Melbourne won't get a compo pick that early for Frawley
Already been discussed with Brett Anderson, probably a pick around 10
why do you say we'll finish bottom 3 then put us fourth for?

I think Melbourne are a good chance to knock us over this weekend which puts them a game clear of us. Then they play Lions and GWS out of the bottom 7 clubs while we play Saints and GWS. Think they might finish above us.
Richmond play the saints twice and the lions and gws so not much chance of slipping below us however carlton have a pretty tough run only playing Saints out of the bottom 7 so could potentially slip below us. Other than that it's hard to see the bottom 7 changing much beyond that.
That would give Lions and Saints pick 1 and 2 which unfortunately I think would take McCartin and Wright of the table then GWS could go Durdin or perhaps Picket.
Just interested to know if those that follow the draft would be excited at the prospect of Durdin, since he's been a bit disapointing this year and also if anyone think he could work as a forward or if he's better suited as a defender?
With the underperformance of Goddard and Durdin so far this year I'm starting to lean towards Downgrading the pick and looking at somone like Lever/Lamb/Kietel and Duggan/Petracca/Pickett.
