Despite what some on here say, I'm convinced from what McCartney and some of the Assistants have said that Roughead will at some time be played up forward. He may become our ultimate swingman: can play in the ruck, as a key forward and as a key defender. Like his older cousin.

It makes perfect sense for us to recruit a key defender. I know I'm not convinced that Talia will make a gun CHB and I'm not sure that Roughead will play the rest of his career at full-back.
I also wouldn't be surprised if that's the way we saw Roughy long term but personally I wouldn't be moving him from the backline, he is bloody good down there and a huge part of how it functions.

Maybe he can play different roles long term and that might be how the coaches see him but tbh he hasn't shown he is capable of that and he's actually been pretty underwhelming on the very small sample of evidence we've had. I just don't think we should be basing important list management decisions on Roughy maybe being able to do it, if that's what we want then let's give Roughy the rest of the season to show us he's capable of it.

yeah it does make the head turn over a bit. I've been racking my brain trying to figure out what our plans are. it'll work out in the wash though i'm sure. We need to get taller though. That's one thing i'm sure of. Getting outmarked in every game
Yeah I'm confident in the people running the show so I'm sure it will work out. Agree about us getting out marked though it's a bit weird because I think our team is actually fairly tall across the ground, besides the forward line which is probably just missing one genuine tall but other than that is still pretty big. And even the smaller guys like Hunter and Dahl are quite strong in the air.

It's definitely an issue we need to address but I think we've got the cattle on our list and will see it improve more and more as the younger guys take over and I'd imagine we will continue the trend of drafting bigger bodies (no matter what position they play) anyway.

just because Marchbank is a KPD now, doesn't mean we won't try to switch him into a KPF ;)

I think in the Metro vs Country game that I watched, he played up forward
he was moving up the ground, marking everything
can't really remember if he kicked many goals, but he was moving too far up the ground to
so I'd have to believe his tank must be pretty good for a big guy

Word is the next Ryan Griffen is in this draft.....

Weller from Qld is our pic in this years Draft -I then spoke to a friend who looks after accademy in Qld and was blown away when he said Brisbane will find it hard to pass him his words where plays like Griffen and kids a leader........

Also said Cordy is 3rd round

Bottom line is none of us knows this far out what will happen come draft night.

5: Western Bulldogs – Caleb Marchbank

Position: Defender/forward
Height: 193 cm, Weight: 85 kg, DOB: 7/12/1996
Club: Murray Bushrangers
Projected draft range: 5-25
Plays Like: Harry Taylor/Jarrad Waite

Bolting up the draft order and into the top five, Caleb Marchbank’s National Championships could’ve not been a more polished performance. The key position swingman has caught the eye of many teams, including the Bulldogs, to find his draft stocks rapidly rising. Arguably the best intercept mark in the TAC Cup competition, Caleb Marchbank’s rise to first round calculations is hardly difficult to fathom. Marchbank plays predominantly in defence, where his ability to read the ball in flight whether under pressure or not is elite, while his eagerness to rebound from the back half makes him a real playmaker. Marchbank could be best described not too dissimilar to Jarrad Waite in that he backs himself to win the contested ball in defence, marks over his head when he’s expecting contact and uses his strength in his kicking to set up further afield. He keeps opposition forwards quiet while also having a big influence on the game himself. As a one-on-one defender, Marchbank is disciplined, and defends first before pushing as an option. He understands when to leave his man just as much as he knows when to stay, and often can kill a contest with a strong spoil. Marchbank starred in Vic Country’s win over Metro with 20 disposals, seven marks and seven rebound 50s, while against Metro the second time around he was thrown between half-back and half-forward which was really pleasing. Given his athleticism, Marchbank could develop into a prototype utility, playing between the arcs on a wing or half-forward or half-back to fill any need required. He could literally play any role out on the ground given his build, athleticism, marking capabilities and attacking prowess. Winning All-Australian honours at centre half back, Marchbank averaged 16.2 disposals at 82% efficiency, including an average of 4.8 marks (two contested) and three inside 50s per game.

..
simply not true
he is a very poor kick of the footy, I'd say worse then Wallis and Smith
maybe not as bad as Talia, but that is something we don't need more of

I COULD see us picking up Weller but I heard our recruiters are after players that could play next year
So I don't think we'll be taking any projects in the National Draft, natural footballers will be the way we go; which is something Weller is

I'd be pretty happy with Weller, iffy on Marchbank; because if we wanted to develop him as a forward
I'm unsure because I don't think hes been known as a goal kicker

I'd want Hammelmann but Brisbane will likely take him if we nominate him even in the second
and who is Yong? do you mean Jong? not sure we'd even elevate him to be honest, maybe Redpath
if he doesn't get omitted before the end of the year from our best 22

Sounds like the sort of player we would love tbh.

What do people think about Ahern? Seems like he's moving up the order to around our pick pretty fast. Gives us a bit of what people have been screaming were lacking too. Looking at this draft we may not have the chance we all wanted to grab a quality tall forward at our first pick but we have a pretty good opportunity to finish off our midfield with a bit of polish. Some real good options moving up around our pick.

Aherns write up from Boundforglory:
7: Richmond – Paul Ahern

Position: Midfielder/forward
Height: 181 cm, Weight: 77 kg, DOB: 01/08/1996
Club: Calder Cannons
Projected draft range: 5-15
Plays Like: Dale Thomas

With a stand out National Championships netting All-Australian honours, Paul Ahern’s rise up the draft ranks has been profound. The Calder Cannons star has come from a long way back, but averaged 17 disposals and 1.5 goals per game for Vic Metro. Ahern is a busy midfielder with a knack of making things happen when he’s around. His vision and awareness through traffic is elite, as are his foot skills. He finds targets short or deep, and importantly can do either off a step. He has great spatial awareness, coupled with speed and agility which makes him such a dangerous player to have the ball in the hands of. Around the packs he has clean hands and has an uncanny ability to slip out of tackles and take off from a stoppage. He is lethal around goal and kicks goals on the burst, but in particular, his pace and link up work are focal points of his game. He is an important avenue to goal with score involvements and assists and was Vic Metro’s best player in both statistics. Ahern averaged 7.8 contested possessions and 3.2 inside 50s for the carnival as well as three clearances. His gut running and flair will feature prominently in this year’s draft.

and also Wellers:

Pick 11: North Melbourne – Lachie Weller

Position: Midfielder
Height: 181 cm, Weight: 71 kg, DOB: 23/02/1996
Club: Broadbeach
Projected draft range: 8-20
Plays Like: Dayne Beams

A brilliant decision maker, and a player with a certain pizzazz, Lachie Weller has been part of Gold Coast’s academy but is ineligible to be selected by them in the bidding, as he hasn’t resided in Queensland long enough to warrant a zone selection. Weller is arguably the most well-rounded and polished midfielder in this year’s draft crop. The medium-sized midfielder wins his own ball on the inside, and is full of hurt factor and quality ball use to be damaging outside the pack. He and his St Kilda-listed brother Maverick are polar opposites, but Weller junior is the pick of the two. He has terrific hands and an equally brilliant kick. He’s got serious depth in the way he moves the ball by foot, long or short, and is a danger at the stoppages where his clearance and tackling rate highly. Quite a busy, high-production midfielder, Weller has played senior NEAFL football as well as benefiting from having access to Gold Coast as a part of their academy. He wins a heap of the footy, kicks goals and is a well-rounded leader for his age. He averaged 18.3 disposals at 75% efficiency, one goal, two marks and two clearances during the National Championships.

No wonder were interested reading that :P

How do people rate Durdin vs Goddard vs Marchbank?
Durdin uses the ball the best out of the lot
Goddard can read the play probably the best
Marchbank best intercept and contested marker

Goddard reminds me a bit like our Roughead, looks far more comfortable taking the bigger forwards
Durdin I'm not sure about what sort of opponent he plays his best football on, but is athletic enough to go with most other talls
Marchbank reminds me of Brian Lake, marks everything that comes his way and should have pretty good endurance

Aherns write up from Boundforglory:

I'd be disappointed if we took Ahern with our first pick, also wouldn't really call his foot skills elite either
everything else seems fair though! But....if we downgraded our pick and he was a pick; I wouldn't mind

Why would I be disappointed? Its because I think he plays his best football in attack and we have a lot of options for a medium/small forward, that isn't to say I don't think he can't become a midfielder; I've gone cold on Pickett and Duggan, Ahern seems very 'flavour of the month' to me and I'll be waiting until he goes back to the TAC and see how he fairs  actually gone ice cold on Pickett, because he doesn't win enough of the ball consistently and that is something we rate highly

basically I believe we'll go for someone with good endurance, best available/most likely to be able to play early next year
no tank? no thanks, will be our motto :p

Good to see Marchbank's played a bit up forward in the champs too. Only kicked the one goal but seemed to get plenty of i50s and take plenty of marks. i'll take a closer look at this kid

also ^ a look into some of next years talent, will be kept in mind as well when selecting
could get a classy midfielder, two years in a row
so if we only got the one (think we need 2-3) there would always be next year :D

agree with also what Rahul said regarding Goddard
Jeepers, looks like Sydney are going to get another two bargains through the academy system/father son next year.

Yeah I'd only be taking Ahern if you thought that he was capable of moving into the midfield long term, agree we have a lot of options for small forwards but I don't think it would hurt to add some more firepower up front, not that its a huge need but as long as he adds something different to the team in the midfield, which he probably does. Agree that it would be best if we downgraded our pick and then got him though.

It's interesting - they both sound like the player we look at (especially Ahern, given we seem to weight rate of improvement highly) yet they're both at 181cm and we also seem to focus on taller mids (look at our last three first rounders - Macrae 188cm to 190cm now, Stringer 191cm to 192cm, Bonti 192cm as drafted).

Chances are the player we take (if we keep the pick - and I'm not convinced we will) is barely in top ten calculations as yet and they way the kids finish the season will determine who we take.
