You've covered a lot of it.

I'm a massive fan of the idea that if a player's not doing it at junior level he won't do it at senior level. Obviously you've got to model and project what growth does to them but in general I don't think players just 'gain' ability or 'put it all together' like that. Durdin's a great contested mark. McGovern style. He's a great field kick, and he's athletic. Despite all that he just can't do anything. In the champs he averaged 10 touches playing between the arcs and through the ruck a lot. At SANFL reserves level it's 5 touches a game. As a forward he's pretty bad, runs to the wrong spot, can't seem to utilise his contested marking, doesn't know the little tricks to work opponents over, goes up the field at the wrong time. Down back he's not particularly powerful. He's got good closing speed on long leads but seems slow to react to the initial lead and being double backed and also I'm not too sure his acceleration is that great at the moment (though his top speed is fine.) He's also got a nice wingspan but he can be beaten one on one and occasionally lacks discipline in blanketing his opponent. His footskills are really quite good but due to a low football IQ (and this is a big one, if you're taking a bloke in the top 5-6 you want more than just a lockdown back) he doesn't get himself in position to utilise them. He has the ability to really contribute to the transition but he's just not able to do it very often.

Half my problems with Durdin are potentially fixed when he bulks up. With 15 kegs of extra muscle I think he's certainly going to be a more powerful player & better 1 on 1 as well as having more force when contested marking (that said, I don't want to be picking a player on the assumption that muscle/bulk will fix all his problems). The other half are mental. Footy smarts are possibly the hardest thing to learn and IMO they're the most important thing in the game. He lacks them. Just lacks that something dominant such that even if he bulks up and smartens up a little I still just can't say with any confidence he'll be anything more than a role player. It's a bit of a gut feel I'll admit, but in general something just feels a bit off with him. I can't remember a player projected to be picked so highly based so much on speculation and potential and so little on exposed performance and I'm not sure I can get on board with it.

Gee really sounds like you're describing Liam Jones here.

Interesting.. KM has put Mckenzie into #6 in his power rankings and declared him a top 10 pick when responding to someones question. Obviously just 1 persons opinion (he did rate Kietel highly as well and has now dropped him) but interesting..
Alot of hype about him lately, doubt he is there in the second round.

Keitel in the WAFL colts has achieved relatively lean numbers and looks more like a state league key position player.

McKenzie is a tall, big guy but the key with him is he's starting to really put things together. He's putting forward some dominant performances and his production is trending sharply upward which is a good indicator that his game will continue to improve.

McKenzie probably doesn't go top 5/6 or even top 10 but he's someone who may well be worth a top 5 pick or close and has a real opportunity to become a dominant big contested marking forward.

Like Payne and Duggan (can he slide please) would be nice to have a few Jets In the draft this year

I'd like if our players would compliment one another really well; in the draft

Payne doesn't really seem like he'd be a dominant KPF; definitely a strong 3rd tall type of forward though

like I said earlier, we might even end up 'topping up' on KPPs this season and focus on class for the midfield next year

Agree I think we'll take three KPP including Zaine. Maybe take a punt on Lever and one of Kietel or McKenzie. I could see us taking insurance in the middle in case of more injuries to Clay and/or Boyd blowing up next year or retiring this year late in the draft. Think that it might be Hislop kid is going really well whenever he plays and isn't too one dimensional

I actually really like Hislop to

will probably use most of our rookie spots to bring in some midfielders/take punts on players

a lot probably depends if Higgins stays or goes

and any compensation picks, where that ends up

might find ourselves with an abundance of KPPs as well as a midfielder with any luck

Think there might be a few tasmanians to be picked up this year. Maybe not early but there's going to be a few.

When people are saying we will take a punt on 3PP, are they talking about Foster?
So say we take 5? Picks
1st round pick - KPP
2nd Round pick - KPP
Higgins Comp - classy HBF/Wing. Like Duggan if he were to slip
3rd Rounder - Cordy
4th rounder - Foster
Thoughts?

Foster will most likely be a Rookie. The cleanout of the rookie list will be good to get him a couple of mids (one of these 19yo's floating around wouldn't be too bad) and take a punt on someone.

As for talking about 3 KPP we were talking about the main draft. Would take a punt on a midfielder in the fourth round as for everything else it is pretty much spot on.

Thanks Knightmare - always appreciate your input on the Bullies board (...and your phantom draft thread is compulsory reading each year for many of us.) :thumbsu:

Oh gosh, I am just picturing the Bulldogs cheer squad singing it like this, to the tune of I'm A Believer, like an English Soccer crowd
"Sugar, aw, Honey Honey"
"now I'm a BeLever, not a trace, of doubt in my mind"
"All you need is Rough, da da da da da"
"Dahlhaus, in the middle of our street"

What else have we got? :p

something similar to Skippos would be pretty good, what do you think Wizard17

1st Lever or Laverde
2nd Keitel
Compo (?) Finlayson
3rd ...probably Cordy or the best available
4th Drummond/Hislop? a midfielder or if Cordy was here..even better

rookie Foster, outside types of midfielders

Vickers-Willis totally screams a player we'd take, hard working defender that does the team things...real ugly kicking style :p

That is pretty much it for the main draft. As for the rookies would take a punt on some guys who are talented but need to build up their bodies and are outside types and maybe 1 maturish 19 yo just incase of injuries to our midfield group doesn't have to be an outside type but if he can play in multiple positions it would be nice. I'll go and look through to make a little bit of a list of them.

We might be promoting 2. Jong and Redpath? So I doubt will have 5 picks available in the draft unless we have a real clean out or trade heavily. We will have rookie spots available however.

I wouldn't be surprised if we rookie 1 or 2 of the top up boys we have been using this year. I reckon we'll do it to build the relationship with the players from WRFL. Plus a couple of them have been super impressive.

You reading my mind TK ? Not 10 sec's. before seeing your post I had been about to ask if others thought like me, that some of our rookies would come from our Footscray regulars. Then guys we may want to look at further, might then be recruited to the Footscray VFL list.

Worth the risk to rookie Conlon this year? Not much of a risk and certainly has the talent that we can't ignore. Jeez if we can take Fuller at 42 we can surely give Conlon a 2 - 3 year opportunity on our list to see if we can get him to become a good footballer.

Wouldn't he get picked up in the draft this time around?

probably not, has come back from his injuries and been real quiet
will likely take a little time to get back into the swing of things & hopefully he doesn't have to worry about anymore injuries

Quite a few 19yo's on those combine lists. Would love to have Grace as a rookie and then try and develop a couple of outside mids and foster. Reckon Grace could work as a small defender or as a ball winning mid who uses the ball better than most in that category. Was keen on him early and it looks like a few of the clubs are too.

Agreed... been thinking this for some time. If we can afford to be patient with others like Howard, surely this guy is worth the risk...
