Is there seriously a chance that Melbourne would get a pick straight after their first pick as a result of Frawley going as a free agent? It seems extremely generous compensation considering that could be pick 2, 3 or 4 on top of their first pick. That for an ok player, but he's hardly Lance Franklin or Gary Ablett.

I would have thought an end of first round or late first round pick....16 to 20 or so would be fair value. Surely the AFL would see the common sense in all that.

If they are that generous then Melbourne would be fools not try and orchestrate that. And if that's is the generosity of the AFL what should we get for Higgins given his age, potential and that fact he was pick 11. Have to think he's be mid to late first rounder.

I also heard that Stkilda will be trying to get a priority pick this year too. Based on what? Nothing wrong with a couple of years re building, after all they were playing finals same times as us so do we also ask for the same? I think it's amazing they can even contemplate it.

The compensation picks are based on how much the new team pays them and how old the player is, and because of that it looks like Frawley will get them a first round pick. I think the AFL has some flexibility in diverting from the formula but I don't see them doing it, even though a second top 5 pick for Frawley seems mad.

Thanks, I know how it works, but I can't believe that the compensation would be that high. It's too extreme. Frawley is a meat a three veg player, he's good, does the job but he's hardly a franchise player. That said.....if it is to be, I will be interested what we get for Higgins. If we get a mid to late first round then I will disagree with it, but at least it will be consistent.

i would bet that the dees get band one compo, and therefore picks 3 and 4. sook-sook go the football fans.

'frawley isn't worth pick 4, he's a good solid footballer, it's an outrage'. thing is, if we're saying that frawley isn't worth pick four, we should have been screaming that hawthorn should have been awarded picks 1 and 2 as compo last year for losing buddy. lance isn't worth p19, but i didn't hear cries of outrage last year.
(for what it's worth, i love FA and hope the periods of service for RFA / UFA are lowered and the compo picks scrapped).

frawley pick, plus our likely win against GWS, and carlton's likely winless season end equals P7 in the ND.

If it isn't traded away in some deal I see a lot of different things that could happen come draft day with this pick, maybe Wright drops through?

We could go with speed, skills and xfactor (Jarrod Pickett)
Add some outside speed, polish and skills (Laverde, Ahern)
Or tall defenders (Lever, Durdin, Goddard)

We have quite a few good options here.

It's exactly the same compensation though - a pick immediately after their first pick in the first round.
Ladder position isn't relevant when the compo picks are distributed.

This is the problem with the system, how well a team performs in a season has no relevance to how valuable a player should be. The compensation should all be fixed, ie. top 5 pick - mid first round - end of first round - mid second etc.

From what I've read in the past months not much around here has been said for Reece McKenzie (who Knightmare has us taking). Interesting prospect.... Reckon the BIG MAC would like him?

There is a massive difference of opinion on him. He's got some backers like KM who like the way he's tracking and think that his game is translatable to the AFL if he continues to develop.

Others are more of the opinion that he has a long way to go and and pick 6 is far far far to early.

I'm hoping we jump for him in the second round. Top ten is too early.

he has been on an account checking out the draft boards, acting juvenile at posters who criticize him

I've heard some things about him which would deeply concern me if we picked him so early
regarding his attitude

just can't see us digging someone like that so early

That he is a giant man child that gives up too easily and gets overly upset when things don't go right for him

pretty sure he hasn't had to play against one of the KPDs from the Champs yet or anyone of real quality
and NTs KPDs are nearly 10cm shorter o_O

Free agency is the biggest threat to our club and the game generally.

All it does is encourage salary cap cheating (someone will) and keep the strong stronger. An open slather free agency will return us to the days of the 70's when we saw Bissett, Thorpe, Dempsey, Sandilands and the rest all leave "for a premiership"

Matt Hanson is an intetesting one seems to have worked his ass off this year to be noticed by recruiters. Wouldn't be the worst rookie. Ditto Owen. Not sure about any more sub 180's.

How about Errin Wasley-Black? He was NT captain I believe and looked a decent draft prospect but was overlooked. As a running / rebound defender with good height, might be able to fill a need for us

Horrific foot skills though

not really strong overhead, not really fast

definitely smart, bit like a poor mans Easton Wood?

I'm with you Scooter. Free Agency is a total disaster. It will simply create an EPL like scenario where the strongest clubs are entrenched permanently at the top of the pecking order. If it stays we will become like soccer and rugby league where you don't know who is going to be on your team list next week, and simply encourage football mercenaries.
Now that the genii has been foolishly let out of the bottle, it is hard to imagine it getting put back in sadly.

Two things that would make the situation far worse though, would be if the AFL were to be suckered into reducing the qualification period, or remove compensation all together.
If this horror does remain, I would prefer the only alteration other than to lengthen the qual. period, to be that compensation only be given if a player goes to a team higher on the ladder than the one he leaves. This at least would mean the weaker clubs would be less disadvantaged [ step toward equalization].

The system as it stands means the strong clubs will plunder the weak, and those further down the ladder will only get to pick up the crumbs from under the table.

It is time Aussie Rules quit slavishly following the worst trends from other codes, and tried to maintain it's original fairly unique character.

'open slather' is a little bit alarmist. we'd still have a salary cap (and it's hard as opposed to the NBA's soft version). we'd still have the ability to draft players. we'd be able to develop them and 'brainwash' them into bulldogs. we'd still have a restrcited peroid where we could match offers from other clubs. we'd have the ability to be clever with contracts and offer developing prospects longer, more lucrative contracts when their FA is looming.

i feel that if you can't retain a player you truely (really) value in these circumstances, that either your house isn't in order (melbourne, port 4 years ago), or that you don't value them as much as another club does (cal ward FA to GWS - although a bit of an outlier as an example). a talented player who LOVES his club, isn't going to up and leave at 25 so he can earn 25k more somewhere else. and if he does, then i'd suggest he hasn't really bought in, or isn't getting a game. so he walks...no compo picks - we've now got $400K to go shopping and improve our list.

it is true, more players will get shaken loose (isn't that the point?). players from all clubs will be coaxed elsewhere, and even if they do go top 4 teams (i feel it's unlikely), players will be leaving from these clubs as well.

clubs that have good front offices, great football departments who make smart player acquisitions (while letting players go who ask for more time or money than they are worth), a strong player culture of success and sacrifice, and a strong list of well-rounded, talented players - these clubs will make strides under 'freer free agency'. in the NBA there's no better example than San Antonio. small market team, driven to succeed, sacrifice to stay together, recruit players who'll 'buy-in' & indoctrinate them in the 'spurs way'. the great geelong team from the mid 2000s til now sing from the same hymn book.

it is my arguement that fear of free agency is born from a defeatist mentality - that players will leave us for other clubs because other clubs are 'better'. bollocks. we have great facilities, a well organised front office, an outstanding young list that is tight-knit and seems to be dickhead free, strong player development. our club has a great, proud history.

it is the best run clubs that will benefit from FA, not the richest. if we are poor and poorly run, we will be doomed (and rightly so). i'd back us to succeed.

Fair chance best available at our pick, 6 or 7 will be a mid fielder. I believe we will take the best available, that is a no brainer for me.
I have been told our main aim this preseason will be Kristian Jaksch GWS, we have made him a substantial offer, that he is happy with.
I am confident he will end up at the kennel next season.
