Fair chance best available at our pick, 6 or 7 will be a mid fielder. I believe we will take the best available, that is a no brainer for me.
I have been told our main aim this preseason will be Kristian Jaksch GWS, we have made him a substantial offer, that he is happy with.
I am confident he will end up at the kennel next season.

If we can avoid using our first rounder to trade this year but add Jacksh and Frost onto our list with our 2nd rounders/players we will have done well. Still think we shouldn't discount pickett as our first rounder. Allows us to push Dahl in the middle and Pickett plays small forward for a year or two. Or trade it down and get Mckenzie.

I think you may be pretty close with two out of three.

'open slather' is a little bit alarmist. we'd still have a salary cap (and it's hard as opposed to the NBA's soft version). we'd still have the ability to draft players. we'd be able to develop them and 'brainwash' them into bulldogs. we'd still have a restrcited peroid where we could match offers from other clubs. we'd have the ability to be clever with contracts and offer developing prospects longer, more lucrative contracts when their FA is looming.

i feel that if you can't retain a player you truely (really) value in these circumstances, that either your house isn't in order (melbourne, port 4 years ago), or that you don't value them as much as another club does (cal ward FA to GWS - although a bit of an outlier as an example). a talented player who LOVES his club, isn't going to up and leave at 25 so he can earn 25k more somewhere else. and if he does, then i'd suggest he hasn't really bought in, or isn't getting a game. so he walks...no compo picks - we've now got $400K to go shopping and improve our list.

it is true, more players will get shaken loose (isn't that the point?). players from all clubs will be coaxed elsewhere, and even if they do go top 4 teams (i feel it's unlikely), players will be leaving from these clubs as well.

clubs that have good front offices, great football departments who make smart player acquisitions (while letting players go who ask for more time or money than they are worth), a strong player culture of success and sacrifice, and a strong list of well-rounded, talented players - these clubs will make strides under 'freer free agency'. in the NBA there's no better example than San Antonio. small market team, driven to succeed, sacrifice to stay together, recruit players who'll 'buy-in' & indoctrinate them in the 'spurs way'. the great geelong team from the mid 2000s til now sing from the same hymn book.

it is my arguement that fear of free agency is born from a defeatist mentality - that players will leave us for other clubs because other clubs are 'better'. bollocks. we have great facilities, a well organised front office, an outstanding young list that is tight-knit and seems to be dickhead free, strong player development. our club has a great, proud history.

it is the best run clubs that will benefit from FA, not the richest. if we are poor and poorly run, we will be doomed (and rightly so). i'd back us to succeed.

Excellently put. You've articulated well an area of pride I have in my club, and I hope you are right about it being a strength in this era of free agency.

Ahhh Iggy, I love your idealism, and often enjoy reading your contributions, but sorry this all sounds pretty naive to me.
The 'Lake' scenario ? Players leaving, and taking even less money to play regular finals/grand finals ?
The Brown situation, go with the money ?

Look, all the positives you listed can be achieved without free agency anyway. That is simply by good management.

The players you suggested that would be "shaken loose", will be the ones who can't get a game in the top teams, even before being replaced by the champions from the poorer teams.
The big teams will fill up their sides with the best players, while the weaker sides will be topped up with what's left.

It is funny how despite the salary cap, the strong teams still manage to fit big names into their cap, while the lower sides struggle to do the same.
Perhaps the famous old Blue's paper bag under the table isn't dead after all.

As to the NBA, the population, therefore bodies available, is so different to our country, I really don't see that necessarily as a valid comparison.

I disagree completely that a negative position on free agency is in anyway a "defeatist attitude" as well. What it is is the belief that they are simply creating a situation where the equality inequities already within the system, are likely to be exacerbated, and equalization become unachievable.

As for kids not being lured away by $25k per year extra, about the time they reach free agency status, most are producing a child/children and partners wage disappears, so that extra k's can be not merely significant, but life defining.

I've not heard of Frost, who is he / why are we after him?

If Callum Twomey can put out a Top 20 so can I!
(I'm bored as **** and thought this might be fun.)

1. Peter Wright
He is an exceptional prospect. Like a young Brad Ottens and Kurt Tippett he is a rare player that can play as a secondary ruck and key forward. He is an excellent kick for his height and at an uncumbersome 100 kgs already, he moves easily. Is the player with the best combination of upside and performance on the board as well.

2. Patrick McCartin
Old fashioned Full Forward. Great on the lead out of the square, but thats not to say he's not good overhead one v one because he is. Launches at the footy in the way thats ideal for your KPF. Is good when the ball hits the deck as well. Perhaps A safer bet than Wright and has more polished forward instincts, without as much upside (just my feeling).

3. Christian Petrecca
Powerful and explosive midfielder. Has immense contested ball ability. Outstanding overhead and a proven goal kicker to boot, a lot to like. He is not without his rough edges though, by his own admission he needs to work on his endurance and his footskills need some polish as does some of his decision making, but could well be Eastern Ranges third 1st pick overall in four years which is pretty nuts.

4. Darcy Moore
I'd like to get the get the tape measure out him to see if he actually 199cms, but there's no denying the athleticism And has also shown he can mark the ball, very Jack Darlingish but perhaps a bit taller and without the immaturity.

5. Jayden Laverde
Dangerous. I want this kid bad the more I watch him. His body type is very wirey so naturally people compare him to Bonts and J-Mac, but I think he does different things to those two. His first step is dynamite, over a hundred metres he might not be that fast but he can get in front of you into clear air and then make you pay has leaping abillity and fantastic touch just for good measure. Might be a bit high, but as SD has exhibited it the last few drafts sometimes its best to go with upside much to the chagrin of idiots like me. Can sometimes bite off a bit more than he he can chew, but I'd prefer to err on the side of a player who takes the game on.

6. Issac Heeney
Because of the fact he's going to Sydney I'm not going to say much, other than, he's good.

7. Lachie Weller
I'd actually be happy if we ended up with this guy. He seems to has have some nice speed and is class with the ball in his hands. Not a contested beast but we wouldn't need him to be

8. Jarrod Pickett
Similar to Laverde I just become intrinsically more excited when he touches the ball. Our recent dreadful history with WA players (baring JJ) can't be ignored though.

9. Paul Ahern
I know he's had problems with consistency but really apart from a few who hasn't. Reminds me a lot of Luke Shuey (I might compare every speedy mid to him I know but that 2011 game made quite a impression).

10. Jake Lever.
Could be a lot higher if it wasn't for that pesky ACL. Reads the play exceptionally well. Sound defensive skills. Good kick. Leader. Underated athleticism I feel (at least pre injury). Former ameuter boxer. A lot to like, just need to know his knees alright.

11. Connor Blakely
Its a shame we already have approximately 500 inside mids because I love this kid. He is a contested animal who makes exellent decisions with ball in hand. BLASPHEMY WARNING: He reminded my somewhat in the game in the game WA played against Country, of Tom Liberatore.

12. Sam Durdin
He is clearly talented. He is also coming off an injury. He's a great pack mark. Got good athleticism and is a sound field kick. I just have him a touch behind Lever because if both are CHB and fully fit I like him just a bit more I just feel he's more of a natural fooballer. No slight on Durdin.

13. Caleb Marchbank
Another KPD with injury concerns yay. Marchbank is a great intercept mark who makes decisions. Very impressive champs. Is another guy I'd welcome if we determined he was the the guy.

14. Hugh Goddard
I guess I found it really hard to separate all these KPD's ha? Goddard Is a victim of his own hype as a potential no 1 pick and isn't actually as disappointing as some might suggest. Has the tools to be a good KPD at AFL level.

15. Corey Ellis
A lot like his fellow Western Jet Lachie Hunter, Ellis makes the right decision with the footy in his hands more often than not.

16. Angus Brayshaw
Despite my hatred for his ****witt uncle this ranking of Brayshaw is not personal I swear. The only part of Brayshaw's game I see as being really translatable at AFL is his contested ball ability, people writing of Brayshaw's speed and skills just does not match up with what I see with my eyes when I watch him play, they're average. But he has nous for finding and winning the ball which has value.

17. Matthew Hammelman
Love the way he moves for someone that tall, and exhibited really good instincts as forward. A lot to work with.

18. Jarrod Garlett
The family that just keeps on giving. On talent I think he's in the top 20. I highly doubt goes that high unless its to Freo or WC just too much baggage with the name unfortunately. But he's a livewire with the ball in his hands.

19. Jackson Nelson
Solid player in my view. Perhaps a bit limited athletically, but give me a smart consistent player like him any day.

20. Jack Steele
Belconnen, how could I not. The standard of the NEAFL is what it is, but this guy is class.

Assuming the current ladder positions stay the same, and nobody trades their pick:
1. Petracca - St Kilda
2. Wright - GWS
3. Brayshaw - Melbourne
4. McCartin - Brisbane
5. Lever - Western Bulldogs
6. Durdin - Carlton
7. Ahern - Richmond
8. Pickett - West Coast Eagles
9. Laverde - Gold Coast
10. Moore - Collingwood

More taking into account the F/S and academy picks, and what individual clubs will need/the idiosyncrasies of particular recruiters.

We need a BigFooty Bulldogs Phantom Draft thread, even those that don't pay any attention can luck out/give us all a laugh. :p

If Scary_Foot_9 can put out a Top 20 so can I!

1. Petracca
2. Heeney
3. McCartin
4. Wright
5. Moore
6. Lever
7. Durdin
8. Brayshaw
9. Laverde
10. Weller
11. Pickett
12. Duggan
13. Goddard
14. De Goey
15. Ellis
16. Lamb
17. Blakely
18. Marchbank
19. Ahern
20. Nelson
How I think they'd go in terms of impact at the next level; with some of the KPPs probably taking some time before coming good
but this is at the end of their careers :p (going to take a while before anyone can say I was right/wrong ;))

Counting in compo picks my first round goes

1 Christian Petracca- StK
2 Sam Durdin- GWS
3 Angus Brayshaw - Melb
4 Jake Lever - Melb (compo JF)
5 Peter Wright - Brisbane
6 Patrick McCartin- WB
7 Paul Ahern- Carl
8 Jayden Laverde - Rich
9 Jarrod Pickett - WCE
10 Lachie Weller - GC

Edit: Just updated (for the first time since the second round of the championships :P) seeing GWS wanting to take a defender first up and Melbourne taking a punt ala Stringer could pay off for us...

McCartin I see sliding hasn't played too much this year and his condition will put some off.

Ahern is a far better player than where you ranked him reminds me a lot of Dahlhaus he just changes games and breaks them apart. Also forwards would love him to the death, he kicks magnificently to a forwards advantage. Not many may agree but I have him ahead of Laverde who has skills no doubt but struggles to find enough if it in my eye.

Oh really? It is just my personal opinion

I think his televised games he certainly highlighted how good he can be
but the games I saw which weren't, looked a completely different player

really think he struggles on the inside and is bit scrappy with his use there
definitely better suited to the outside role and his kicking is a strength

his pressure & tackling isn't anywhere near where I'd like it, his size/frame also bumped him down a few spots as well

So would people be disappointed if we took Ahern? He is one I've put almost zero consideration into.

I probably would. I've only seen him a few times, but he just doesn't look like someone who will ever be a gun. Not a top 10 pick kind of guy, imo.

FWIW I think we need a Steven Motlop type just as much as anything else, if that's Ahern I have no problems taking him.

Plenty of options at our pick.

if we did downgrade our first pick nope

at our first pick, still prefer Lever

probably prefer Ahern over Pickett though, something I'd never of said at the start of the year
love was strong for Pickett at the start of the year (for me) :drunk:

Honestly, I'll be disappointed if we don't take either of Lever/Laverde, unless somebody waves their magic wand and Wright/Petracca are available at our pick.
