Dan(n) whats your take on Petracca - some of the hype is pretty wild. If there was some way to get #1 and #4, would you be temped to take Petracca at #1, knowing in all probability that one of Wright/Mcartin is almost certain to be there at #4 anyway?
I'm not as on board the hype train as most are. I don't think he becomes that elite centre bounce midfielder at AFL level. For starters, he's almost a year older than some of the kids he's playing against, with that early January birthday seeing him narrowly miss last year's draft. He's a big boy who uses his strength and physicality to push his way through packs and keep his feet more often than not - and my issue is whether he has enough strings to his bow to be an elite midfielder at the next level, where he won't be able to use brute force to such an extent. He's a powerful athlete and is very quick, but for me, ball winning - both inside and out - does not come totally naturally to him, and it will see him struggle to get the 25+ disposals you need to be an elite centre-bounce player. His endurance is unlikely to ever be anything brilliant, and I personally don't think his skills are strong enough to account for these things (but they aren't poor - not by any means). For me, Petracca likely settles on a half forward flank and plays stints through the midfield. He's brilliant in the air, and his quickness, strength one-on-one and power makes him a real goal kicking threat - these are things that likely will transfer to a reasonable extent. I think he'll be great in the midfield in spurts, but think he lacks the propensity to get in there as a permanent, dominant player.

Petracca is the best player on exposed performances this year - but that's not saying a whole lot when you consider the complications that have befallen those considered to be his closest competitors. McCartin had injuries. Wright didn't get much continuity in position. Durdin could not recapture his form following his injury, and spent a lot of time in the ruck - a position he won't play at the next level. Lever was out all year. Goddard failed to become the dominant force many expected. So on and so forth.

For mine, Petracca is that classic clear number 1 on output who goes on to be a very good player, but not the best from the draft. He has transferrable skills, absolutely, but I'm not convinced he has enough to be an elite midfielder - and as such, I would be more inclined to take a key forward if we do end up with pick 1 (which I don't think we should go for anyway).

Bear in mind though that my opinion on this is significantly different to a lot of others'.

Thanks for the details Dan.

Why not a back line player?
Maybe because he rushes his decisions
Any remaining interest in Harrison Wigg from SA. Has good skills, but a lack of accountability could mean he is Sam Colquhoun 2.0. Still should have a look at our 3rd but I'm sure those Christian Howard types have scared us off.
How about Josh Glenn?

I like the club he plays for already
I can't put my finger on why ;)

I reckon Glenn's a risk to all outside SA. A bloke doesn't turn down going into the draft in his draft year to make sure he's prepared to move away from home, and then come with no go home risk a year later. Think he'll end up drafted, but probably to a South Australian side.

Laverde doesn't have any natural instinct to defend, whilst he could do some damage as an attacking defender, I believe most AFL coaches would take advantage of his lack of defensive awareness and a smart forward would destroy him.

As a wingman or high forward he could do some real damage.

If we signed him up

I wouldn't be worried :)

He's a better kick than Howard though. Also, if we use a third round, and he fails, it wouldn't hurt so much. So I'd be pretty keen to get him with a latter pick. We need some better kicks around the club.

**** me sideways, if we can still grab Lever or Wright then I don't really care what has happened.

Boyd patrolling chf, stringer leading hard out of the square and wright for the bail out (also providing a chop out in the ruck. Delicious (as Bruce would say).

I'd swap Boyd into FF and Wright to CHF. Boyd is our contested beast and wright our St Nick. Stinger the icing on the cake with a 50/50 between middle and FP.

Who might be available for us at 36 if we do the cooney trade that might suit?

Everyone has been talking up Clem Smith as a potential slider, today the WA u-18s talent manager called him their most talented player (and so did I a few weeks ago).

Would be a good pickup for any team, just don't know if our list needs another small.
