I'm not as on board the hype train as most are. I don't think he becomes that elite centre bounce midfielder at AFL level. For starters, he's almost a year older than some of the kids he's playing against, with that early January birthday seeing him narrowly miss last year's draft. He's a big boy who uses his strength and physicality to push his way through packs and keep his feet more often than not - and my issue is whether he has enough strings to his bow to be an elite midfielder at the next level, where he won't be able to use brute force to such an extent. He's a powerful athlete and is very quick, but for me, ball winning - both inside and out - does not come totally naturally to him, and it will see him struggle to get the 25+ disposals you need to be an elite centre-bounce player. His endurance is unlikely to ever be anything brilliant, and I personally don't think his skills are strong enough to account for these things (but they aren't poor - not by any means). For me, Petracca likely settles on a half forward flank and plays stints through the midfield. He's brilliant in the air, and his quickness, strength one-on-one and power makes him a real goal kicking threat - these are things that likely will transfer to a reasonable extent. I think he'll be great in the midfield in spurts, but think he lacks the propensity to get in there as a permanent, dominant player.Dan(n) whats your take on Petracca - some of the hype is pretty wild. If there was some way to get #1 and #4, would you be temped to take Petracca at #1, knowing in all probability that one of Wright/Mcartin is almost certain to be there at #4 anyway?
Petracca is the best player on exposed performances this year - but that's not saying a whole lot when you consider the complications that have befallen those considered to be his closest competitors. McCartin had injuries. Wright didn't get much continuity in position. Durdin could not recapture his form following his injury, and spent a lot of time in the ruck - a position he won't play at the next level. Lever was out all year. Goddard failed to become the dominant force many expected. So on and so forth.
For mine, Petracca is that classic clear number 1 on output who goes on to be a very good player, but not the best from the draft. He has transferrable skills, absolutely, but I'm not convinced he has enough to be an elite midfielder - and as such, I would be more inclined to take a key forward if we do end up with pick 1 (which I don't think we should go for anyway).
Bear in mind though that my opinion on this is significantly different to a lot of others'.
