Just personal opinion mind you, but I think it'll be easier to find a someone we like as a mid later in the draft (Webb, Wigg, Gore) that it would be to find a KPF - at a genuine KPF size and talent.

I also think having two KPF's is better than one. Although I'm not sure I've actually seen this in my lifetime - so it just may be rumour and conjecture - no factual basis to it. :p

It's a really good point 2 is better than one, but at any cost, i'm not as sure.

I can counter with there could be a couple of KP players of worth at 39 to 46. So it's a matter of working out are the mids available at 26 and 27 as good as the ones at 39 to 46 and same with the Talls.

I think guys like Webb, Wigg, Lonie, Gore and a few others are pretty good, but I think Menadue is better, as is Lamb, EVW, D Mckenzie, Boekhorst and couple of others. I think McKenzie is the best FF available after McCartin and Wright. I'm not sure he can play any other position however. I think what we do need is a CHF/CHB. Others perhaps suit that better. Sure we can have insurance for Boyd, or Boyd could be a CHF one day or we can have depth to trade.

If we get Menadue then I will be ok with R.McKenzie, I think Menadue is exactly what we need although he will need time to develop his body for the rigors. I love the versatile utility, the big mids. Langford, Lamb and EWV all have that potential. Really hard to pass that up. I think we have needs forward and back for KP players, but we also have midfield needs for speed and skill. I actually think it is more important this draft. It will be interesting if R. Mckenzie slips do we pull the trigger....certainly hope we pick him ahead of McDonald.

I think Collingwood is scared Laverde goes at pick four to GWS. Laverde
is the best player in the draft, ceiling of a homeless man.
Pies are talking about taking Lever, so that GWS take Lever at 4.... Therefore GWS link themselves to marchbank, to reduce the pies threat.

No thanks to Reece McKenzie at 26/27.

I wouldn't complain too much if we took him because he does look exciting, but the reality is, we're pretty well-stocked with Key-Forwards right now. We just elevated Redpath, brought in Boyd and already have guys like Crameri, Stringer, Campbell & dare I say, Roughead, Cordy, Roberts who can play those roles. Until we axe some of these players, we shouldn't be overlooking our significant needs like pace & quality kicks for big lugs forwards.

Nevertheless, I have a feeling McKenzie will be the new Key-Forward everyone gets excited about, but doesn't go anywhere near as high as people predict, kind of like Panos, Membrey, Hourigan etc.

I've already named him Beetle.

ah...MOC you have made a rookie mistake by falling in love with a player pre draft. It's common with hobby farmers who name their pigs only to one day have to eat them. Stkilda fans have done it with Petracca and now are trying to love McCartin. God help Melbourne supporters should Brayshaw be gone before their pick.

EVW has been in my thoughts now for a while and so has Menadue. I have tried not to nik name them yet or dream of what number they will have for fear they get taken by someone else or we choose someone we didn't even concider. Instead I have spread my love wide, shielding myself from the hurt. I won't be thinking too much about Dubby.....sorry EVW until we get him. :D

If people flip out due to a few surprises tonight just know that it will happen. Later picks never go as planned.

If someone decent slides to a late pick and Dal pulls his standard "Player number XXXXXXX ...... Some bush league dude" I'll be both unsurprised and pissed for another year. He's done some good stuff but I still think he has an element of trying to prove he's the smartest guy in the room to some of the reaching he does which costs us.

If it looks like a duck, it quacks like a duck and everybody else thinks it's a duck it is very probably a yellow waddling bird.

Not many ducks are called Carey.

I give everybody nicknames. It's not love.

I already call Patrick McCartin fatty fat fat fat and Tom Boyd Allah

If clubs really rate a player who slides to a late pick can they use a pick if they don't have a list spot available than delist someone else after the draft?

Matthew Prudden? Where have we we been hiding him?

:p like someone said earlier(could have been you), we could go Daniel happy
Daniel McKenzie, Daniel Neilson, Caleb Daniel
Time for me to go to the church and repent methinks. Na, it was not. But great (and simple) minds thinks alike!

Great post, well articulated. Agree here. I said a few pages back we needed one more KPF and one more KPD - but they had to be the real deal, not 3rd forwards/defenders. Otherwise, we may as well load up on more skillful fast mids - as we need those too. R McKenzie for mine, is the best KPF bet outside the top 10. He needs work, but so does half the list. Menadue and McKenzie solves a lot of problems for us. And really creates a problem for the opposition....

God I hate reading these phantom drafts this year - solely because of the players sliding to Carlton & Essendons picks.

Can't we just ban them from the next few drafts for being scum?

Should be able to like this more than once...

Just on the inside info stuff, can we get forewarning about it? I want to be able to enjoy the suspense of the draft.
Got any info Pannalstaroz? If it can't be shared pm me Por favor
Guys he won't tell me anything so I'm a little skeptical when people suggest they know what's happening. I'm not going to pretend I know. FWIW I hope we get Menadue or whoever the "top 15 who slides" player will be.

i got the same treatment last week from a good contact. i guess ya gotta be impressed with the club's ability to run a tight ship...not much gets out of VUWO these days that they don't want to let slip (disgraced former captains aside).

I'm already referring to EVW as Beetle and mentally picturing him in the #15, if we don't pick him I may require counselling ;)

Anyone else think R McKenzie is a reach at 26/27? Happy to take him later but would rather the two best runners at 26/27 instead of reaching for tall for talls sake. There are a few good talls available at later picks anyway. Would be happy with either Keitel or Neilson as tall stocks.

I guess mail might come in the players themselves if we've shown interest and interviewed them a number of times. For what its worth skippos said he'd heard that we are interested in clem smith worth a late pick but there are probably 20 others as well

Of those you mention:

Redpath: unlikely to make it
Campbell: is a ruckman who might rest forward
Stringer/Crameri: not KPF's
Cordy: see Redpath
Roughead: is a backman now
Roberts: see Roughead

Boyd aside, I don't think we are in any way well stocked for KPF's. Would you have said the same prior to picking up Boyd?

Knightmare sees him as a top 10 pick.

None of them need to be classical KPFs, they're all capable of playing roles there, which is all you really need to compete in the finals, especially when we already have a potential high-quality KPF in Boyd.

Unless we're absolutely certain none of those guys can fill the Key-Forward role at AFL level, I don't think a KPF should be high on our list of priorities.

Look at our list of players who offer raw pace and/or outside run over the ground:

Wood- HBFer
Johannisen- 50/50 to make it
Jong- Unlikely to make it

That's it.
