Didn't R McKenzie have a very high result in the 20m sprint - better than most mids ???

Yup. And tested reslly well in vert leap and agility apparently.

All of which surprised a lot of draft watchers because in games he looks to move like a glacier.

I like the talent, don't like the fit.

Gimme tall, versatile midfielders with good skills first. If he's there late, I'd happily nab him

If we believe Reece can play different roles ie chf, ruck ...
Then it is hard to let him pass.

Something very powerful having your key forwArds set for 8-10 years in Boyd & Mckenzie

It is something we have simply lacked forever. You could argue the foundation of hawthorns era was the Franklin roughead combination which enabled the list managers to focus on the minor roles which are easier to fill

Reece is quick and strong
Add Boyd and a rampant stringer and crameri in the same forward line and it has a scary power about it

Whether he is that guy is up to the recruiters

Agree entirely.

Understand the logic, but I'd argue that the mids are easier to find. Get the KPP's in first, then build/add to the mids around them... we already have a starting basis for a midfield too - although it has big gaps I'll agree.

Yeah but I don't think too many fancy him as a line-breaking midfielder.

Baring that in mind though, I'm surprised he's not rated higher; he's got the speed & athleticism that McCartin doesn't have, and he's no less versatile. Again, I wouldn't be too disappointed if we picked him up at 26/27; I just think we should be taking explosive, high-product players like Menadue, Wigg, Lamb, Boekhorst etc ahead of him.

Guys he won't tell me anything so I'm a little skeptical when people suggest they know what's happening. I'm not going to pretend I know. FWIW I hope we get Menadue or whoever the "top 15 who slides" player will be.

I think its brilliant they are keeping tight lipped.

Im happy for nothing to get out now - although I must confess I would love a post mortem with who we wanted to get that didn't make it to our picks or just in general the picks that shocked

Think outside the box man, he's just a slightly bigger version of our current midfield.... :p

I'd be aiming at McKenzie and Menadue, then Wigg, Gore, Webb etc at our later picks. One KPP, 4 midfielders...

I've decided on my final picks (that I want) rather than what I think we will get:

26: D Mackenzie
27: C Menadue
39: R Mackenzie (reckon he might slide)
45: J Lonie
46: T Keitel

Don't hold your breath on D McKenzie unfortunately. Would be shocked if he was still available at 26/27. :(

Yeah I agree, but a man can dream Fronk.

Reckon he and Menadue will become great players and would top off our midfield perfectly. I'll be stoked if we can at least get one of them.

Anyone else think R McKenzie is a reach at 26/27? Happy to take him later but would rather the two best runners at 26/27 instead of reaching for tall for talls sake. There are a few good talls available at later picks anyway. Would be happy with either Keitel or Neilson as tall stocks.

Agree, I rate Menadue, D McKenzie, Vickers-Willis, Maynard, McLean, Webb, Blakely all higher then big Reece. I don't think he's the best fit for us with Boyd in the side anyway.
But if he's there later I have no problems with us picking him.

I can see (and agree) with your view as well.

I just see him as a lesser Tom Boyd, and struggle to see them in a balanced forward structure. If McKenzie was a lesser version of Peter Wright, or if we'd taxed Jeremy Cameron off GWS instead of Boyd, I'd be all over him.

So, rather than adding to our full fwd depth, I'd seek to address other areas. I like big versatile MIDs who filter into slots in midfielder/flanker rotations. I'd look at key pt post defenders as my next target.

But most importantly, our list is still Swiss cheese. If the big lad is the best rated player at any selection, I'm happy to pick him.

I think it's been mentioned before that we really like Clem Smith and that our only competition for him are West Coast and Fremantle. If they don't take him at picks 32 and 34, expect us to land him.

For me, I'm thinking the draft for us might go something like this:

26: Connor Menadue
27: Ed Vickers-Willis
39: Lukas Webb
45: Clem Smith
46: Toby McLean

If Reece McKenzie is there at 39, I hope we grab him. It sounds like we're big fans of Lukas Webb, but I prefer the other guys there.

  • Ed Vickers-Willis
  • Connor Menadue
  • Lukas Webb
  • Toby McLean
  • Daniel Nielson
Tyler Keitel &/or Clem Smith at 45/46 if Nielson & McLean are gone

Good points. For me, putting aside the structural elements of having 2 real KPF's, the big things I like about Reece is the inherent qualities. Big frame, big sized guy. Fast, very fast for a guys his size - you can't teach this to someone. Good contested mark (again - same thing), good shot for goal, aggressive. These are all qualities you want in a KPF. Just get him to spend a year or two on an endurance running program and plonk him at CHF....

Then I'd go for speed and disposal skills with our other 4 picks...

Been waiting patiently, but I can wait no longer. Igloo who is your Templeton/Stringer draft favourite this year???
I hate to disappoint you, fronk, but I don't really have one. Been a bit meh on this draft class.
Menadue is probably my favourite that is realistic.
For my super smokey, Daniel Butler.
