Love the smurf.
I would happily use our 3rd on him.

Love the smurf.
Not sure, but averaged 25 touches a game across the Carnival. What where his numbers today?
Give Wright an opportunity in the forward line, he is a very good KPF.
SA's midfield today didn't have anything close to the star-power of the midfield of Metro, yet they won. Essendon have several A-Grade mids yet cannot kick a winning score. Geelong's midfield is somewhat average, but they have Tom Hawkins there to
HF: Billings, Stanley, Templeton
FF: Minchington, Lee, Longer
That's not near AFL standard. It's not close, but I do admit the midfield looks very, very good.

Similarly, a gun forward line will cover for a not so good midfield.

17 disposals today. Not sure, but averaged 25 touches a game across the Carnival.
You forgot to add the best tall forward from next years draft.Manimal_dunstan, Rahul...
C: Blake Acres, Christian Petracca, Jack Newnes
R: Tom Hickey, Jack Steven, Luke Dunstan
HF: Billings, Jaksch, Ahern
FF: Templeton, White, Longer
Int: Stanley
THATS how its going to go. Now knock it off you two....

I don't think this holds true at all.
Gone are the days of being able to 'kick it long' to a beast of a forward to watch him rip games apart. It's all about spread now. That genie is out of the bottle and he's not going back in.
We had a legendary centre half forward, a good honest full forward and one of the best crumbers of all time in front of a stacked midfield that was never known (from 2004-2012) for kicking bags of goals. In 2009 and 2010 we were beaten by teams with more potent midfields. While they may not have actually kicked the goals themselves having so many 'name' mids pushing forward means that they need to be covered just that little bit more.
I'm all for getting gun talls into the team but I'd prefer to build a deep and talented midfield first and formost.
Geelong won 3 flags with Nathan Ablett, Cam Mooney, Tom Hawkins and James Podsiadly holding the key forward posts. Collingwood had Travis Cloke and Chris Dawes in form so rare it hasn't been seen since. The Swans won a flag with Sam Reid and a one legged Goodes.
Only the Hawks of recent times can claim they won flags on the backs of key forwards but it was actually Jack Gunston who had the biggest impact of all their 'talls'. Roughead and Franklin basically played decoy roles v Fremantle and it was their midfield/half back setup that carried them in the 08 GF.
Fev is the only key forward in recent times who performed like a star in front of a shite midfield.
JRoo won colemans in front of top 10 picks in Deledio/Martin/Cotchin/Ellis/Conca. Even Jeremy Cameron had Cal Ward and the #1 pick orchestra for support.
I'll take Petracca thanks. Grab a 'decent' tall down the order and watch blokes hit him lace out.

Em: SchacheYou forgot to add the best tall forward from next years draft.![]()
For us to win a flag against GWS and GC we will need top quality forwards supplied by a top quality midfield so trying to figure out which we can skimp on is pointless.
I think our best option this year would be to trade pick 1 for Patton/Boyd, but this would only happen if GWS really wanted Petracca and Patton/Boyd wanted to spend more time in a crap team and I just can't see that happening. If we pick up a young key forward next year we run the risk of them being too young and not developed enough by the time we are contenders.
Mids are a bit easier to find and develop quicker so we don't need to load up on them just yet. We will still have a few more top 10 picks to come after this year so with smart recruiting we can fill those holes as we go but we desperately need a key forward.
Very very true, but it's much easier to find a quality midfielder late than it is a quality forward. For us to win a flag against GWS and GC we will need top quality forwards supplied by a top quality midfield so trying to figure out which we can skimp on is pointless.
I've gone cold on most of the forwards for next year, but mostly because the quality talls of this year are holding them back. Will be great to see some true forwards in Burton, Weideman and Schache next season. You forgot to add the best tall forward from next years draft.![]()
Had back issues, caused real problems for him, but came back and was very good in the TAC Cup.Rahul how did Wright go as an underager? Was he played as a forward?
Clinton Jones should be gone so Caleb Daniel is safe coming to St Kilda.Only caught the second game today, but Caleb Daniel was mighty impressive for a wee laddie, while Wright was very underwhelming. Looked to have the technical things right, but looked a bit like Holmes around the ground in terms of his positioning.
Of course, this is the only game I've seen, and have never seen any of these boys before. But it was rather underwhelming compared to the JRWC last month where I watched every game.

Great post LWP, but I still cannot bring myself to draft a midfielder, and one that isn't clearly the cream of the crop, at #1. 1 star midfielder is not equal to 1 star key forward. Have a look at the players who are capable of winning the game almost single-handedly, there's Gary Ablett (will struggle to find another player like him, ever), Scott Pendlebury (see Ablett), Travis Cloke, Nick Riewoldt, Lance Franklin and Jack Riewoldt (he's killed us a few times, as he has many other teams).
So they can take Durdin or Goddard with it...I'm telling you, after seeing McCartin, etc, this year, I so want us to trade our top pick for Patton or Boyd or Cameron - any of those GWS talls. They crap all over this year's bunch. But I guess that's the problem. If we don't want the #1 pick, why the hell would the Giants want it? So they can replace an awesome player that they've already developed, with a less-talented and less-devoloped player?
UB i'll be putting you on ignore if i see that Josh Walker post again......
