Pick 1 just isn't very good this year. Neither is 2, or 3, IMO.

Our recruiters will obviously pick who they think is the best and i'd say it'll be McCartin we won't wait another year to try and replace Roo, next year is likely to be his last so draft one this year and he'll get to play and learn a bit from the Skipper next season.

I'll be very happy if we walk out of the draft with Caleb Daniel and Reece McKenzie is another one of interest. His "types" (really tall, big, strong units that can also pinch-hit in the ruck) are the ones that can actually be successful if you take them outside the top 25 or so of the draft, as evidenced by Kurt Tippett and Drew Petrie, who are about the only two tall "key forwards" who have been taken out of the top 25 (aside from those taken F/S, or in the NSW Scholarship program) of their draft and been really successful in the AFL.

Another slightly appealing thing about McKenzie is that he comes from a basketball background, as there was an interesting article in the HS today about some of those in the AFL who come from a strong basketball background (like Pendles, Dal, Bontempelli, Goldstein, etc) and how having played basketball can help them in certain situations on a footy field, in particular with their spacial awareness in heavy traffic.

Oh well. By the look of it we will get another try next year and most likely the year after . Not to mention a priority pick by then .

McCartin has underwhelmed this year but remember the recruiters are looking at a much larger sample of these draft prospects. Trout and crew have likely been watching McCartin (and others) for years and may just be quite the bit more optimistic than us. Draft Paddy, have him play a year or two with Roo and he should develop accordingly.

Apparently Billy Longer's team won the Under 16 Vic championships as a basketballer too.
Great guy, well-grounded and articulate. Good interview on Saints' Press Pass

For value, and in comparison to last years, for sure IMO.

screw that we finally have an uncompromised draft and find ourselves bottom and theres nothing in it for us. I thought our bad run of luck had ended in 09 and 10

Just asked Brett Anderson what outside midfielder he thinks might be at our 2nd rounder mentioned Liam Duggan.

If i recall correctly he has decent foot skills, sounds like someone we need....

Someone that is probably well and truly on our radar is Harrison Wigg, who has been described as somewhat similar to Suckling, as far as his left foot being a weapon goes. Plenty on the D&T board seemed to be talking him up during the champs and I see he made the AA team. I note that he was doing the kicking in for his team at the champs.

Can't seem us taking Wright
If he can kick a few bags everyone would jump on McCartin

If they weren't HBFers, I'd have a long look at Dillon Viojo-Rainbow and Wigg, remind me of Suckling and Kolodjashnij respectively. Wigg a long, booming kick while DVR has an elite boot and can seriously drill them in to forwards, he has a great trajectory to his kicks, bullet-like kick.

Would love him at our selection, such a classy player.

Rahul, I noticed that you have Urban top 20 when most others with some credibility doing mock drafts don't have him there, and you have Maynard and Ellis outside when most others have them in the top 20.
Any particular insights there or more intuition?

Oh, OK, didn't really think about whether he only played down back or not. As far as you're aware, do either of those two play on the wing at all, or have the attributes to be able to do so easily enough, or do they play pretty much exclusively down back and only look suited back there?

Alex Urban is a beast of an inside midfielder, love what he can produce in the engine room, and Ellis is one I just haven't seen produce the goods. My rankings is more where I would draft them, as opposed to where I think they will go in the draft. My prediction is that Ellis will go in the top 15, while 'Braynard' will be a second round selection.

We (and the media) are getting a little caught up in the form of players from the champs. As I've already mentioned recruiters have been watching these kids for years. What they would have been looking for in the champs is small things we may not have noticed that stood out and suggested theres some elite qualities that could be worked with in an AFL environment. For example, McCartin may not statistically have had a massive champs but the recruiters would certainly have noticed his clean, one-grab marking skills, speed off the mark, body positioning and when he goes for his marks the way he shields the ball out in front not giving his defender an opportunity to spoil. De Goey they would have noticed how he influences games by having 5 minute bursts where he dominates the clearances while still being able to use the ball extremely well.

I think this draft is being underrated and I believe clubs, especially the Blues, Dogs and Lions would love to have pick 1 in this draft to handpick the best kid, which has been a little unknown given the evenness of the top 5, but will become clearer as the year goes on - I actually suspect it's clear now and any club especially those three I mentioned would love to have access to the number 1 pick Paddy McCartin.

Last years top 5:
Hogan
Martin
Boyd
Kelly
Billings

This year doesn't come close to that IMO. Quality is better though for the pick you have when it gets deeper

I think we will find last years draft will be one of the best of the last decade.

Rhaul what do you think of Kade Answerth. He hasn't plaid all Tac games because of school footy but every time he has played Tac he has been in the best and is averaging something like 25 disposals a game.

If we are going to persist with Armo, Ross, Dunstan & Mav (maybe with TC as a tagger) we cant keep adding slow(ish) inside ball-winners. This year, with Lenny as well, we look so slow when other teams spread.

We need to add speed & elite ball use. The next 10 picks (2014 & 2015) are so important. If we bugger up 30% of them (I'm assuming 10 picks all under Pick 50) we might not get to the elite level.

As someone mentioned, we've got the foot soldiers in place. Now we need to add the cream.

Acres will make a world of difference. Markworth was expected to play this year, and if he had lived up to expectation would be great. Temps has speed to burn, and nobody expected him to break his arm. I agree we need some more outside class, but there's a few there already.
