Another reason to trade it, is if you have virtually no graded difference between 2 players. You don't mind which one you get. If you can find someone who is sold on 1 player, and they'll give you extra picks for it, then it's a potential win.

Instead of pick 1 and take McCartin, you might get pick 2 and 33 and pick McCartin anyway. Package 33 and another pick and end up with another 1st round pick and 1st round talent.
e.g. If we walked away from the draft with McCartin and Pickett, I wouldn't care what the draft nos say, that'd be another year for us with a top-3 rated talent and a top-14 rated talent.

We clearly need more quality, so the chance to get 2 rather than only 1 has to at least be a consideration.

However the way it's playing out, I don't think Wright is shining enough to make another club desperate to get him.

Wright is a superstar, the most athletic, lead up forward at a freakish size who is super quick and has a massive tank, huge hands like glue and is an amazing kick for goal. Pick number 1 all day, every day, every year the draft has ever existed, equal to Riewoldt IMHO.
If we traded that pick for two others in the top 10 you would vomit watching him win flags by himself ala Wayne Carey for the next 15 years.

If this was true, then why is there doubt over him being the #1 pick?
Why hasn't he dominated the U18 carnival a la Boyd kicking 6 in a game last year?

Wasn't Peter Wright dominating as an underaged player up forward last year?

Hit it on the head.

We won't think about trading the #1 pick until we know the final draft order and after the draft combine and U18 carnival.

Say Lions or Dogs are desperate to land Wright and they have pick 3. And we're not 100% convinced he's the standout #1 and say GWS finish 2nd last.

We may trade pick #1 and 39 for picks 3 and 23.
We then use our second round picks #21 and #23 to trade for a first rounder.

In reality, Lions/Dogs get Wright at #1.
GWS take Durdin or Petracca as they have no need for McCartin.
We end up with McCartin at #3 anyway.
And we've turned the two 2nd rounders into another 1st rounder. Eg pick 10, where I'd imagine we'd be an exceptional chance to land a long term and talented player. Eg Lever was at #10 on Knightmare's phantom draft.

Watch last weekends game if you can find it anywhere, didn't play the week before as they want all squad members to play 2 games.

Although he held a significant height advantage over South Australia's 197cm ruckman Sam Durdin, Wright was able to impact the play around the ground and was dangerous when the ball was sent his way in the forward line.

wright > durdin it seems

i think that game will be enough to decide who is taken first

i'm starting to reset my expectation on this draft a little bit. i'm starting to accept there wont be a clear KPF like there has been in previous drafts

if wright genuinely is a resting ruck and very good at it. i'd be happy with the outcome. having an elite one like him would go a long way towards the rebuild. we have stanley to cover him, until he comes good. when wright over takes him, we can trade out. how does it affect hickey/longer/holmes/pierce, i see them all as genuine rucks so i think we deal with that as a ruck problem rather than a fwd/ruck problem

i still think trading down for multiple picks or maybe a patton/boyd/cameron might be the best outcome, but i'd still be happy with wright. especially once you posted the combine results

i just cant shake my love for picket ;-) think he'll be the steal of the draft

My worry is, even if we take Wright and he's that ruck/fwd combo, and even if he becomes one of the best at that position that there's been in the AFL... who is replacing Roo?

Or to explain it a structural way; that's our David Hale or Dean Cox position sorted for 12 years. What are we doing about the Roughhead or Kennedy true KPF position - y'know, the one that's a real serious concern?

Sounds like Wright is more of a Tippett than a Cox

Yep thats probably a better comparison. Point is the same though; structure. We probably need to get someone already with experience in 2014 or 15, if it's Wright we go for.
Just seems easier to go for a guy who fills the gap we need filled, with rucks not looking too bad, and players who can be a 2nd/3rd fwd in a more balanced structure. They too might need replaced during our rebuild, but it's less urgent.

he's more of a cox from the one game i saw than a tippett. but he's definetly not a tap ruckman IMO, if thats what you meant

he's like a more agile kruzer or hille. actually now that i think about it. he's like big ben but fwd

tippett is very agile for his size

thats been my thoughts as well but ive kind of given up on this draft for that position. theres no stand out roo or CHF

there might be a roughy that might come good

maybe we look to the next draft for our CHF, maybe white will turn out ok?

What about Kietel? Is he as good as they say? Also another good KPF from WA is Mc Carthy from GWS did you see either play of them and do you rate them?

Going through it in my head, at this point he's probably competing for that 5th spot for next year. 2nd best forward at this point in time, but there's a year and a half of football to be played.

Who is the best forward so far for the 2015 draft?
