What sucks about the draft is Melbourne likely to get a top end selection for Frawley he was absolute woeful lately, a team would have to be stupid to pay him the $$ that warrants a Band 1. Still living off his 2010 AA ever since has been crap.

I would be surprised to see a club pay the req amount to give Melb band 1 compo. Would a club pay more than 500-550k per year?

Looks gone for sure. Where ever they finish they'll snag the pick straight after it so probably 5 + 6.

From Paige;

If there wasn't already a clear cut favourite for the number one pick in the National Draft, then today's performance by Christian Petracca showed that he is the man that every club in the country is desperately after.

In tough conditions at Box Hill City oval, Petracca put on a master class kicking five goals and finishing with over 25 disposals to single-handily dismiss the North Ballarat Rebels and put a halt to their eight-game winning streak in what can only be described as a complete performance.

Petracca led from the front early, collecting 12 first-quarter disposals, running riot through the midfield, and kicking a classy goal off a step, gathering the ball in congestion and fending off an opposition player to snap around his body for the first goal of the game.

The 2014 Larke Medallist and Vic Metro MVP staked his claim as the favourite for the number one pick, in a polished performance with over 30 AFL scouts in attendance.

Petracca was a class above all day in windy and wet conditions, collecting the ball with ease, clunking marks through the midfield and up forward, tackling ferociously and playing dry football, in the wet.

With the two hundred strong crowd at Box Hill City Oval, each Petracca possession was met with a "ahhhh" from the crowd, marvelling at his ball-winning ability and sheer power in which he cut an imposing figure.

Fresh from a successful championship, Petracca was the difference in game that demanded a match-winner. In was a seesawing affair all afternoon that delivered four seasons in two hours, however Petracca's ball use in the wet was no different to that in the dry.

He was clinical around the packs, winning the contested ball and setting up his teammates, but he was equally damaging on the outside, marking strongly around the ground and with precise delivery hit targets short and long all afternoon.

When he shifted forward through the middle parts of the game, he sent Rebels defenders into paranoia. An attempt to physically rattle Petracca was welcomed by the All Australia midfielder, which if anything fired up to a point that North Ballarat simply had no answer fr him.

Although Petracca kicked five goals, he quite easily could've had seven.

A classy mark, going back with the flight of the ball to mark overhead and falling to the ground, Petracca dished off a crafty handball to a teammate running by to set up a goal square goal, and recapture the lead which personified Petracca's selflessness as a player. It was a period in which the game was in the balance, during a cutthroat third quarter Petrcca kicked two important goals to sway moementum in the Ranges favour.

Then during the fourth quarter, Petracca's talents rose to a new level. He ran rampant through the midfield and in one particular piece of play, he gathered the ball off the back flank and took off on a two-bounce escapade through the middle of the ground and kicked long and direct to a teammate 15 metres out from goal. Such was his precision and composure in that action, his teammate barely moved.

Winning best afield honours, it was arguably the game-changer in terms of the race for the number one pick. Despite the need for quality tall's at St Kilda and Brisbane, Petracca is so influential and ready-made, that he could demand the drafts highest honour.

Petracca boasts a mature body, an elite kick, unheard of agility and an engine to boot. The bull-at-a-gate midfielder busts open packs, emerging with the ball in hand and fends off would-be tacklers with a smile on his face.

Petracca, who last year took the TAC Cup world by storm as a bottom-age player in 2013 was known for his contested marking and goal-kicking nous as one of the leagues best forwards. He's now added contested ball-winner, endurance and the ability to run out games to his list of attributes and has a frame that is ready for AFL football round one next year.

A prolific ball-hunter and a clean user by hand and foot, Petracca stands as the drafts clear-cut number one pick.

Not so quick, Petracca kicked 5 today and was BOG vs a very good opposition.
I said sold to both of them, but I'm just happy that we've had a couple of really strong looking performances from two of the likely top 3. Hoping to see plenty more of that between now and the end of the season, so that we have plenty of really strong options in front of us throughout the trade and draft period.

I would be far from unhappy with Petracca, who I've had a really good feeling about since he tore a team apart in the TAC Cup finals last year. He sounded to me then like the type who could be the best of his crop and now that he's proven that he can transition into the midfield, I'm even more confident that that could be the case. Get him and we'd then need to throw the kitchen sink at Boyd/Patton.

Not saying that he's going to be as good as either of them, especially Hird, but he sounds to me like a bit of a cross between Hodge and Hird, or a harder, more physical, but less classy version of Hird, who can kill teams in the air up forward and on the scoreboard, but also rip them apart in the midfield.

It would be good if Petracca, Wright and McCartin all have great ends to the season and are still all #1 contenders. It would open up some interesting trade options with GWS if they really wanted one of them.

The Pelican: "Yo SOS, we have pick 1 on the table for Boyd and as you know he wants to be traded to the Saints. Next year he's out of contract, he will still want to play for us, you will have wasted a year of development on him and there's no guarantee we have pick 1 to offer you."
This. Please this.

Well I am on the Petracca bandwagon. Today showed that we desperately need more thru the midfield - Armitage and Hayes (Steven injured) are really the main players with Dunstan showing a bit (in 2 years will be awesome). I think there are enough decent talls available at our second pick to warrant taking Petracca at 1.

Performances like today demand that he gets taken at number one

We have issues across every line and need elite talent.....I trust in Trout, Bains, & Pelchin to get it done.

The priority pick if it's pick 2 or pick 10 or pick 19 we can use to pick up a tall. We can also look to get a tall in via trading (Jaksch?)

Some bloke named Brian tweeted Paige earlier in the week saying that the Saints wouldn't pick a tall after her mock draft if he wasn't the best player.....

I'm just a bit aroused reading that write-up....salivating even!! We need to take him - our recruiters need to come up with plan B for a tall fwd. You can't let this kid go to Brisbane at pick 2

If Petracca does turn out to be the standout #1 this year then we better hope like hell we can get a key forward from GWS.

Yeah, but I hear he has a tiny pickle...

:P

I hope you're right Brian, I really do. We need to nail our top 3 picks when we have them and we need to hope that the draft pool is good enough when we do have them.

Reece in the second round...

This. Please this.
In fact, on the whole get Boyd with 1 thing. I'd go so far as to threaten the Giants that we'll pick Petracca if they don't do the deal. Just out of spite. Then they'll be stuck getting another superfluous tall they'll have to trade for unders later.
