I'm not counting out a compo especially if we don't win one match for the rest of 2014, last win was Round 5, 10 rounds ago.

ive been thinking about this more and i'm starting to sway back to wright, if we are going to use pick 1 in the draft.
the reason being is that i think this draft is full of talls around the same mark in each round, each one fills a different need and have various degrees of concern. there isnt going to be stand out forward that looks the complete package that could play CHF.
if we just look at Wright v McCartin, each one plays a different position, has different attributes and has some decent knocks on them. i dont think either player is going to be our next fwd that we build the fwd line around or our next primary target. so i think we need to stop looking at it like this and start to look at what our needs are outside of the primary fwd, and what options are available in the future to fill the CHF/primary fwd role. we could trade in patton/boyd, we could find one in next years draft. so lets look at the rest of the roles in the fwd line and what wright and mccartin can provide us.
Were concerned about wrights ability to play forward and his agility/speed to be succesfull at AFL level. he seems more suited to a resting ruck role where he can play deep use his height and stength to take a mark. then he can go into the ruck and use his tank to cover ground. i'm starting to see him as a replacement for kozi (in his good years out of FF) and what we briefly tried to turn mcevoy into (given his ability to take a mark around the ground). i dont see hickey, longer, pierce or holmes as fwds, they can probably get by there if our midfield improves but they wont be damaging like wright IMO. wright seems to know how to play fwd unlike the others.
McCartin we are concerned about his height, weight, tank and his ability to overcome this to be succesfull at AFL level. he seems more suited to a third tall in the cameron, mayne, kennedy mold than a CHF that could replace roo. he also has the issue with diabetes which i am not sure how that will affect him at AFL level.
its clear that neither of these players are ones that we can build the fwd line around. they are not going to be our primary goal scorer in 2020.
so looking at how hard it is to fill both positions. i think clubs seem to struggle to find a good resting ruck option that can be damaging fwd. tippett is probably the best example. when you have one, you cling to them and theyre worth their weight in gold. there seems to be less options for acquiring one of these, than there is a CHF/Genuine FWD. third talls seem to be easier to find, sometimes you probably dont need them at all.
so if we look at wright vs mccartin, i'm more comfortable that we will find a better option than mccartin, than we would wright. especially if we are chasing patton/boyd at CHF. i think there are also options for that third tall next year (burton?) and even deeper in this draft.
so for that reason alone, i'd take the rare resting ruck with an usual combination of height, tank and strength than a third tall/193cm tall that will probably be available in future drafts/trade
Melbourne have had a heap of them.Surely we have to suck for at least two years? Look at Melbourne and Port and they didn't get one.
Melbourne have had a heap of them.
Port would have if GC didn't enter the drafts in 2010 and 2011.
Yeah only 5.What did we win last year, 5? If we have 8 wins from two seasons then I guess its a possibility. I would expect very unlikely though.
Yeah only 5.
Personally i think St Kilda and Brisbane need them.
. If anything, they badly need off-field help.Melbourne HAVE had a heap of priority picks but they changed the rules and we wont be getting one.
Half Back Pocket, Durdin was well held by Hughy when the game was there to be won, but then started to show his talent late in the game. I think he's a second tall in the AFL, he doesn't seem built to be a key forward or defender, but his elite kicking will mean he's a weapon off half back.
A HBF, isn't that exactly what we need??Really.... a weapon off half back.....?

He's 194 at the moment, and that's the least of his worries. Is McCartin tall enough at 192?

Kicking for goal (improving), endurance, his health, his weight, his defensive work and versatility. What are his other worries?
