It's ok to let go man... If UB can do it then you can too.

Petracca has been dominating this year while none of the KPP's are standing up. I think he is starting to put a gap on the pack...
He may be at the top of some wishlists, but he wouldn't have a large gap put on the pack. He was leading the Larke Medal before today. The Saints have outlined the need for skilled midfielders, Petracca's skills aren't to the level of some of the outside mids in this draft, he's an inside brute. Long kick yes, penetrating kick yes, but an elite kick? Probably not.

Better?
Our 80 goal a season forward!! Send him over!! Richmond, we'll give you Montagna, Armitage, Steven and our 1st!!!!!!!!!111!!!!
Correct Unc...Durdin for GWS imho. Problem is, they'll get Durdin at 3 anyway!
Ahern a smokey for their selection IMO. Unlikely, but a chance. He or Petracca.

I've got it.

C: Blake Acres, Christian Petracca, Lachie Weller
R: Tom Hickey, Jack Steven, Luke Dunstan

:D

IMO our recruiting strategy at the moment is built around certainty.

I don't think we took any risks last year, which I think is a good thing.
Eg Billings was highly rated at #3 and a rising star nomination in his first year justifies it at this point.
Dunstan was a bonafide gun inside mid with leadership talent all over him
Acres was probably the slider but had been previously touted as a top 10 pick until his shoulder injury.
Even with Templeton and Weller - Templeton was widely tipped to be drafted, some had him in the top 20 in phantom drafts and Weller obviously had the runs on the board at GC.
Longer - a former top 10 pick.
Bruce and Delaney were unproven, but cost very little.

I just feel like the strategy is very deliberate and measured.. and we are not in the business right now of taking a huge risk with a #1 pick in our hands. Hence - we are all uncertain that Wright/McCartin are going to be bonafide star key forwards.

What will 1 season difference make if we choose to draft the gun key forward next season?
Why the rush to land Boyd/Patton etc.. right now?
We could easily trade our first round pick next year for one of Boyd/Patton. IMO they are both FF types that can't both play alongside Cameron I would of thought. GWS may well be in a poor bargaining position when one of them declares they want out for more opportunity and/or to come home.
And then there's of course Free Agency where we can bring the gun key forward in straight away.

Anyway, I think we will likely select Petracca this year as this this is the 'safe' option at number 1.
Its pretty rare a winner of the Larke Medal doesn't go on to have a very good AFL career.
Previous winners include Sheed, Whitfield, Coniglio, Bennel, Swallow, Watts, Marc Murphy, Tom Hawkins

This is the option I think we will take, unless the Pelican can trade say pick #1 with GWS for their pick#3 and a fringe player that we really want. And then we get one of Wright/McCartin/Petracca anyway.

If certainty is our plan then putting all our hopes and dreams of getting a forward on Boyd/Patton wanting to leave or getting one using the FA market might not be the best idea. Both of those options are far from certainties and we will need more than a bit of luck to make them happen.

Any forward we draft this year or next will be pretty young in 2020 and by that stage the club wants us to have won a flag. Can we win a flag with a 21 or 22 year old key forward? Because if we don't get a more developed one by trade/FA and our current players don't develop then we might be forced to try.

Good to see Patracca finally getting some love. I've been following his progress closely and as I said a few days ago he will be the best player from the draft IMO. Does that mean he goes pick 1? I think if we finish bottom we are odds on to pick McCartin. From what I've heard we rate him extremely highly and he's shown enough to suggest he will be the best tall forward option in the draft.

As of now, and subject to change, this is my personal preference for pick 1:
1. Trade for Patton/Boyd/Cameron
2. Select Petracca
3. Select McCartin

Just go pick best available and I see a talent gap between GWS's forwards and McCartin, Wright, Goddard etc. Petracca to me looks like he could be one of the best midfielders we've seen for sometime. He's got so many elite qualities and one of the best 1v1 games we've seen for a while. Powerful runner, clean hands, marking, endurance, agility, booming kick, strength in the contest. He looks like the type of player you want when playing finals and a tough brand of footy.

Another quick point. Even know there is an evenness in this draft I still see a significant gap between the top 5 and 5-20 range so I wouldn't be trading pick 1 for picks 10 and 15 for example, which I think was a suggestion in another topic.

If Caleb Daniel was 185cm where would he go in this draft? Kid looks like a star and the only thing that is going against him is his height.

Personally I don't care about his height as he has everything we are looking for and he would be another cult figure for the club if we got him. I'm pretty sure they said last week that he does a 16 beep test.

Like...Thompson? Dusty? JPK? Watson?

You know I never thought of Thompson but that's a very good comparison. Petracca better agility with his basketball background but similar clean hands and strong mark. Martin another good example, even Dangerfield without the elite speed off the mark.

Petracca with the first, Webb with the second, Daniel with the third, Jaksch in the PSD, Schache next year and a full preseason for Spence.

2016;
FB: Wright - Delaney - Bruce
HB: Webster - Jaksch - Geary
RK: Hickey - Steven - Dunstan
CR: Newnes - Petracca - Savage
HF: Billings - Schache - Webb
FF: Templeton - White - Longer
Int: Acres Saunders Weller Daniel
Em: Armitage Curren Ross Markworth Murdoch

Simples.

With his speed, acceleration, cleanliness with the ball, ball-winning ability, disposal, composure, vision, endurance and ability to kick goals it would be hard to see him going anywhere but the top 10. I'd take him with a late 4th rounder or early 5th right now.

You really think he will slip that far? Lewis Taylor slipped to pick 28 but he is 8cm taller I guess. How does Daniel's U18 performance compare to Taylor's?

Out with the old, in with the new![/QUOTE]

Yikes, it's moments like this, I just think, holy crap. Every name, every player chosen, every player NOT chosen, every decision, could be the difference. It's needle in a haystack of choices - and dammit if we don't need to find the absolute right needle.

Never become an AFL recruiter. Air Traffic Controllers have less stress.

I would maybe rookie Caleb. Unfortunately at that size you can't compete at AFL level. Far too small.

Boomer the only exception.
You know what, I really hope not. He couldn't have done any more to put himself in the frame and I want to believe there's still a place for genuine footballers in the AFL.

Gotta lose the helmet though...
