I would say speed in all formats is important to the way the game is beginning to be played.
Speed of mind helps read the play, make good and quick decisions, help move the ball faster. Speed of foot helps move the ball faster and carry more ground.
These same elements can be said about the defensive aspects of the game. Someone who is fit and able to cover a lot of ground is good but someone who is quick can reach contests some may not be able to get to and apply more pressure, whether perceived or actual pressure, which is the hallmark of our game now. If you can pressure the opposition everytime they have the ballerina then you're more likely to impact their disposal and create a turnover.
Speed is important but no more important than a lot of other skills. Good quick decision making and elite disposal help negate the pressure being applied but if you're quick and use your pace I don't think there is any doubt about how important it can be for team success
