Draft bombshell. Paddy McCartin has firmed as favourite to go number one pick with the Saints. Details only on @3AWSportsToday at 6:35.
Will be interesting to hear what they say but it wouldn't surprise me if this was wrong. If I was in the Saints position I'd probably be trolling journos I didn't like with bullshit mail.

I do wonder what happens if McKenzie gets taken before 21/22 and how that effects everything else.

Come Thursday night, if we do go down this path, it will just about be it for me.

Have waited since I was 6 to see a Saints flag, have been a member since I moved to Melbourne in 1988, have seen the Saints **** up and implode over and over and stuck with them, but could not stand to see us do a Ball/Judd stuff up once again.

If these arse clowns go for a KPP over what we need in a absolute quality midfield, I will completely lose my shit.

Will just flip. These people expect me to shell out $500 a season to watch them fail over and over.

Don't know how much more I can keep financing these incompetents
+1 same for me if we don't take Petracca I will lose my shit and they can get stuffed

I know they don't but imagine our recruiters reading this, knowing we are gonna pick Petracca (if that is in fact who we will pick). They'd probably be having a good old laugh. :D

But seriously, I want Petracca. Getting my axe ready.

There is a reason a midfielder is touted as no1 selection compared to a No 21 or 22 selection.

Petracca will be way ahead of anything we get @ 21 and 22.

To get a KP when we have a 6 time AA and five time B&F just signed on for another two years is madness.

If we do get McCartin, I hope he loves zoning back to the defensive fifty because we wont have the midfield to get it to him.

You may not have watched the Saints this season, but we got smashed out of the centre even with Lenny in the middle.

We are now without Lenny, How do you reckon we will go next year?

Absolute idiocy to chose PM over CP for the Saints.
Of course there is more hype for Petracca at 1 vs anything we can get later. We are a 50/50 on Petracca so he is a known value.

Pick 21 could be any of a dozen players, makes it hard to get long concentrated conversations going.

As for not drafting a KPF because we have Roo - THAT it madness. There is no level of certainty that any of Lee, White, Bruce, Hickey, Longer or Pierce hold down FF in our team come 2020.

Everyone is hung up on getting McKenzie at 21 or poaching Jeremy Cameron. There is no certainty that either of these are possible.

McCartin is a certainty.

As for next year... LMAO! You really expect Petracca to be dominating centre clearances from day 1?

We were shite in 2014 even with Lenny Hayes. What the hell is Petracca going to do for our midfield in 2015 without Hayes there?

Be prepared to be smashed out of the middle regardless of who we pick.

Dont get me wrong. Id take Petracca too but this is why we arent in the position of building a list over 3, 4 or 5+ years.

We dont have that scope or that patience.

Grab McCartin. Give him 2 years learning from Riewoldt. Over that time we can draft more ready made mids alot easier that we would be able to poach a premiership ready FF option.

But Lord help the kid if he comes to our club at #1 with "supporters" like this...

I think we all need to take a deep breath before losing our shit over a comment by a bloke on 3AW with a poor track record. These forums can become a bit of an echo chamber after a while with regard to which players are worthy of picks etc. We simply need to have faith in our recruiters and back whoever they pick. Of course we can have our favorites but they know more than us, it is that simple.

If we pick up McCartin over Petracca, it will be the stupidest recruiting since we chose Ball over Judd.

That decision panned out that we arguably missed out on at least one flag in 04,05 or 09,10.

With Judd in our team we would surely have won a flag.
Totally agree!

Non of us are recruiting experts - but if we select McCartin over Petracca the club had better barricade the doors at Seaford, because they will have a mob of very angry supporters heading their way! Anarchy....

Maybe just maybe the club knows more then all the "experts" on here. Gotta laugh people saying they'll walk away from club if pick a player over another one. Seriously, it's one bloody player. For most of season McCartin was clear number one then all sudden everyone was on Petrecca bandwagon. Bet 99% of people have never seen either play a single game.

How many of us are recruiters, and use professional analytic programs to dissect potential AFL Draftees?

I would suggest zero.

How many of us work with/are related to/have a relationship or any sorts with Ameet Bains or anyone of the inner sanctum at the St. Kilda Football Club recruiting department?

Again, I would say zero to very few (barring exceptions).

So why would we a) question our recruiting staff if we picked McCartin over Petracca, or b) believe any media outlet that claims to know who we are going to pick.

The club won't be releasing the information as to who we will be using Pick 1 on, until after Pick 1 has been formally announced.

Be patient, and trust our footy club.

LOL on twitter everyone has bought into the rumour from spud McClure that we are certain to take McCartin. Just yesterday another news paper said we decided on CP last Wednesday! 3AW will get some listeners, and that is the point of this whole rumour exercise!

That's outrageous. I say we all crack the shits and bombard the club with hate filled phone calls and threaten to burn down seaford as our tribe of insane internet heroes know much better.

It's funny, people have been saying for weeks that drafting Membrey - a burly forward - means we're a lock to take Petracca...

Maybe, like we seem to see Bruce as a KPF, we see Membrey as a big-bodied fwd/mid, so we have decided to draft McCartin?

Membrey's only 20, so there's plenty of time for him to hone 'his' craft as a midfielder. He played on the ball when he was younger.

You wont like this but the club may see McCartin + Lamb as a better combo in 5 years time (when we want to win a flag) than McKenzie + Petracca.

“We believed the choice at pick one came down to Paddy McCartin or Christian Petracca but that Angus Brayshaw would also have been a worthy selection.

“It is not as black and white as some people believe. While Petracca is a very exciting forward/midfielder I think McCartin’s claims on being the top selection have been undersold as he’s a quality key forward and they don’t grow on trees."

Hopefully people are putting 1+4 together and getting 9 from this article in relation to picking McCartin. i just don't see how we can sanely not choose petracca. He is everything we have never had. He could be our jarmen in our last saturday in september!!!

Yes it will be very interesting to hear how McClure formed the opinion we are taking McCartin. Was he provided private and confidential info from someone inside the club or is he simply drawing his own conclusion based on info from the club that has been made public?

i couldnt believe it either when i heard it this morning and still cant

the thing that keeps sitting in the back of my mind though is our recruiters and coaching staff kept banging on about "overcoming adversity" when talking pick 1 or about recruits. when it comes to petracca this isnt something i'd associate with him

but with mccartin its something i think of in spades

but if i had to choose, it'd be petracca and about 5-10 other players before mccartin. which is why i dont believe it and like my previous post said, i think its all a beat up. another club might be trying to shake some stuff out or maybe the AFL wants the suspense. maybe we wnat it. who knows
