If anyone thinks R McKenzie is The answer you are on the wrong tram.
PM with two mids who are potentially equal top 10 picks because of the depth of the draft makes sense to me, but that just my opinion.
No thanks Brian I like many believe it will be a terrible decision - I just cant see McCartin being a A Grade forward !

i really like the neal-bullen and lamb combo
I do like the fact he has played senior footy ALA Dunstan. He is one I have read up on a lot and actualiy bothered to watch his draft video just because a lot of people have suggested us. I think if its Petracca its McKenzie, and if its McCartin its Neal Bullen.

Whenever i hear of a "Leak" i think of an
Expensive Plumbers bill
A bigger version of a Spring Onion
Or having a Piss.
I never ever think of a 'true rumour' so CHILLAX peeps . We will 100% be getting Petracca.

(anyway, its a bit disrespectful to McCartin to go ape droppings at the mention of his name anyway. The kid is a quality player as well)

Ok, time for my two cents on this 3AW rumour.
If the club wanted to disclose who we will select at pick 1, then they would release a statement. My read on this is that the MOST info that has been leaked, is that some results were a bit different to what was expected. This has resulted in McClure or someone close to him putting 2 & 2 together and getting 5. Then they took that and thought hmmm, if we start a rumour about them taking the underdog, it will upset the fans, etc.
Then maybe, just maybe we can force the Saints to come out and make their decision public.
I fully believe that nobody at the club has leaked any real info directly associated with who we will take. Our list management team put in so many hours of work on this and will have the eyes of the whole AFL world on them with the no.1 pick. Just see it as being far too important to them to let a leak out at this stage.
I don't know who they are going to pick. Sounds like it was a close decision, just fail to believe that anybody outside the "Saints Draft Bunker" would know or have any info. If there was a leak, the person in question should be marched out the door tomorrow morning.
Just wait until an official announcement is made or Thursday night until you start getting too carried away. With the transparency the club has been showing lately, I am sure there will be a summary of why we chose whoever it is.
EVERY CALM DOWN! Trout and his team have been watching these guys for several years probably, not 3 minutes. They are putting their jobs on the line, and to a lesser degree, perhaps their whole career. They would have future year forecasts of where the Saints list will be, what players are coming up in next few drafts, etc, etc. What do we lose here on BF if we back the wrong player? An abusive post at worst most likely.
Well, thats my point of view. Take it or leave it...

WTF, I leave for a day and come back to this. Mayhem! I will be furious if we don't take Petracca, for 3 reasons:

1. He is the EXACT type of player we need. Like some on here I don't have blind faith that the club knows what they are doing, particularly when the consensus is fairly strong that Petracca is the number 1 player in the draft.
2. We messed up trade week, big time! Melbourne would have swapped pick 2 and their 2nd rounder for pick 1. We could have kept Stanley and had pick 23 to replace pick 22.
3. If there is any truth to the rumours we weren't happy with his combine results, well then the club is a joke. People put way too much emphasis on these tests. The kid dominates football games, PERIOD! Players like Jack Watts dominate combine results. If the club has been sucked into this b/s, I will be disgusted.

Now the standard response here seems to be that the club knows better than anybody else (including 17 other recruitment teams apparently). I can accept that to some degree, however what I can't accept is how poorly we handled trade week. The club should have been 90% sure who they were going to take by then and acted accordingly. When you win 4 games of football, you actually have a fair bit of time to think about it.

Our trade week was so lame it was ridiculous. Seems to me we have overanalysed this draft, spent time doing our "homework", our "due dilegence" blah blah blah, yet we missed a free pick at 23 if we take McCartin. Regardless of whether you like McCartin or Petracca, I just don't see how you could argue the point that we missed a huge opportunity to better our draft position. If it comes out that pick 1 was offered for pick 2 and 23 I will accept all avenues were explored. However, it seems to me the club simply did not know who they were going to take so sat back and hoped they got an offer so good it would just make up their minds for them.

If this is the best recruiting team in the country, why did they not already know who they were going to take?

If this rumour is true, poor planning has cost us big time!

Sigh.... No one knows who the best player in the draft is. We may not know for years.

2000 Yes
2001 No ( missed by 2 )
2002 Maybe ( Jarred McVeigh might actually have the honor ).
2003 Who knows? Maybe
2004 Interesting. Is the mid ( Deledio ) better than the tall ( Roughhead )?.
2005 No ( Murphy vs Pendlebury )
2006 No ( Gibbs vs Boak and Selwood ).
2007 Kreuzer - Vs Cotchin (2) and Dangerfield (10)
2008 Stuffed if I know, but it aint Jack Watts.
2009 Scully? The Cats still might win if Menzel stays good.
2010 I can't say if Swallow is better than Heppel or not. Does it matter?

Now someone will say thats all olden days, and we are better at it now. But they were saying that in 2005 too.

So four number 1's out of 11 turned out to be among the best in their drafts.
I seem to recall laughing at all the Melbourne supporters creaming themselves at their early picks, that was before we found out about the players.
At the time we all though Scully and Trengove were just terrific.
Now that its closer to home its sort of depressing. I'm sorry I can't get excited until I see them play.

If you had paid attention to the draft you'd know that most 'experts' rate the mids/flankers as pretty well even from picks 10-20.

Given the likes of Marchbank, McKenzie, Lamb, McDonald etc who could all go higher, there is a significant chance of getting 2 quality midfielders this year.

Opposite to that - Therd arent any elite KPF options outside of McCartin, Wright or McKenzie.

Most people see Wright playing in the ruck given his athletic ability and size. Some people dont rate McKenzie in the first 2 rounds.

The only constant is that McCartin is the best KPF available.

So I ask - IF we dont draft McCartin, who is playing FF come 2018-2020 when we are planning on pushing into the top 4?

Roo wont be there and you've lambasted the club for resigning Tommy Lee. So who?

Putting alot of faith in Spencer White and Josh Bruce as KPF prospects. Or will you back our recruiters (who you have also had a go at in this thread) to draft one later?

Maybe we can cross our fingers that Cameron picks us?

McCartin makes sense.
So you are telling me mids at pick 21 and 22 are judged as good as Petracca and Brayshaw? OK then

ANd now you want me to tell you who will be available in four years? Ever heard of FA or DFA or the PSD or trading?

And I did not lambast the club for signing Lee and Riewoldt, I asked why sign Lee, why get rid of Stanley and why pick a KP when we have the best forward in the game for the next two years.

What other positions can McCartin play if he is getting thumped at FF? Can he ruck, play in the mids, down back?

Why is he overweight? Is his incurable condition under control? Why is he often injured?

What is the hurry to get a risky KPP when we need a quality mid who can probably score more goals than McCartin if moved forward.

What a load of bollocks. Talls are much more likely as being busts, see Scully, Watts, Kruezer as recent busts as No.1.

But hey, thats my opinion and only true believers like you can have an opinion.

The rest of us can all **** off to other clubs hey?

I love how the best footy brains and experienced recruiters in the country rate these young boys as the most likely to be elite players one day.
But we old 'weekend hacks' & 'keyboard cowboys' are happy to call some of these boys lazy, fat, crap , soft etc etc :p
Im pretty sure the Trout knows more about footy than me. I'll back his decision in:thumbsu:

I think a few forget that McCartin has been touted No 1 for long periods so its unlikely we get a dud if we pick him instead of Petracca.

I suspect its all tied up with the Boyd deal, maybe the first priority was always a replacement forward but the Doggies got in early and next year looks skinny for forwards and the chances of us snaring Cameron have dropped dramatically.

So they look at it and go well lets take McCartin this year with two sliders mids at 21/22 and then throw the whole shebang (No 1 pick) and a few squillion at Dangerfield next year.

So who would you take Petracca and Cameron or McCartin and Dangerfield???

Jesus, its not about calling McCartin crap etc, it is what we believe is the best fit for our club.

Why do we have to have blind faith in the powers that be down at the club.

Blind faith has resulted in our 27th wooden spoon.

We have the right to say that with all the evidence and everything the club has said and ddone that McCartin over Petracca is dumb as dog shit.

Melbourne to get Petracca and Wright/Brayshaw.

You happy about that - bet the Dess fans are

I would hope the club would take best player, which is what they have said they would do all year not take McCarten who has been injured for a big part of the year

Yet still played well.
How many AFL players have had a good year, or a bad year, then gone back to normal.
You are suggesting that we should limit the evaluation of a player's future potential to one season, or finals series.
As someone else pointed out, some of these kids have been on the radar since they were twelve.
