I understand and support the idea behind it and get that the AFL has to compete with other sports, but why don't the AFL just do it directly? Set up and official AFL academy in NSW, QLD and NT and then use them to develop players and increase the player base for everyone without giving priority to any club. It achieves all the goals of the current system without any of the issues.

The obvious answer is $$$: It is much cheaper for the AFL to have someone else pay for and do the dirty work for them. But the AFL already gives money to developing the game at lower levels so why not just continue that pathway all the way to the top level? I 'd be really interested to see how much the 4 academies cost the clubs because I would hazard a guess and say that it isn't massive sums of money we are talking about.
It's pretty decent money- the Swans estimate theirs at a mill a year.

Pelchen, Bains and co are hellbent on bringing in as much top end talent into the club as quickly as possible.

The more picks we use the better the chance of landing quality players, especially in the top 20 or so.

Think if last year we didn't trade McEvoy, yep we would have been happy with billings, but what a master stroke to end up with Dunstan, Savage and Acres in return for pick 24, 59 and McEvoy.

The same applies this year. If we can turn pick 1 into 3,20 and 41 (or a GWS fringe player) just seems the most logical thing to do to hasten the rebuild. We could then end up with 3,20,21,39,41 - 5 picks inside the first 3 rounds. Fringe players could be Whiley, O'Rourke, Plowman, Corr, Jaksche etc.. (We could even throw them back our 3rd rounder if it was O'Rourke or Jaksche)

Don't get me wrong - If Petracca was Swallow or O'Meara, ie a clear stand out - then we wouldn't consider trading pick 1. But I just don't think this is the case this year! Is Petracca the clear no1? Is he a guaranteed gun?
History tells us that the no1 pick only occasionally ends up being the best player in the draft.

I think there is not a significant amount of difference between Petracca, Brayshaw, McCartin, Wright, Durdin etc.. Hence we will offload pick 1 to GWS as the player they need is Petracca. We just need top end talent.

Compare it to last year and I reckon it still would have been a decent trade:
Would we rather have Tom Boyd on the list?
OR pick 3 (Billings) pick 18 (Dunstan) and say a GWS fringe player in Bruce?

Trading pick 1 simply brings in more top end talent quickly and hastens our rebuild.

 we may trade pick 1 but Petracca is absolute gun avg 25 poss nearly 2 goals a game better than
Dustin Martin at same time. Personally will be disappointed if Saints don't pick him.
Particularly the way the game is being played now you need lots of goal kickers forwards & midfielders.
Best player in Championships by a mile ,ready to go now that hastens rebuild.

Would prefer Saints if they do a trade is Armitage to Melbourne for one of their 1st rounders ( Frawley)
They keep Petracca then get McCartin or Lever or Durdin if that is their wish prefer slow build myself .

Melbourne are after midfielders they would prefer 1 new .... Brayshaw & one experienced that is the Paul Roos
model (ala Swans ) who are rated 16th over 10 years of drafting but are No1 is picking young developed players
from other clubs .

Interesting. So for an individual club it is a pretty decent chunk of change but for the AFL that would be nothing. The AFL will get something like $1.5b for the next 5 year TV deal. $4m/yr to help develop AFL level talent in the northern states is nothing. Even if they went crazy and increased it's reach dramatically, it would still be reasonable at $8m/yr.

Have some ancient history - note the dateline.

I'd be happy with a tweak that you can get a F/s pick or an Academy pick, but not both, and if any other club wants to set up shop in a non-traditional AFL area with their own academy, then good luck to them.

There was an article recently where the Swans mentioned that they have proposed that to the AFL, that they would drop out of the draft completely and back themselves with their development academy. They of course get full access to all academy players and whoever else they can entice to Sydney, with $$$$$$.

Didn't go anywhere yet, but you have to like their looking outside the square and the obvious effort they do put into development. It isn't luck that so many players who were ok at other clubs, have excelled at the Swans. Their development program must be exceptional.

That article said nothing about why the swans should get the academy and not the afl.
OK, I'll give you the reason in a sentence.

"Back self-interest, it's always a trier'.

If the clubs do it, you'll get the players.

Actually, if you want to see an interesting example of another academy, look at NZ. St Kilda take money to play there. Hawthorn spend money there on footy scholarships, and develop players like Shem Tatapu.

I hate other teams!
Sad but true. The only way for the AFL to thrive is to get a foothold into Rugby dominated states and converting fans to the code... and to do this you need successful clubs.

Funny how we hate NSW clubs and NSW people hate Melb Storm.
Only difference is that the NRL hierachy ******* hates the Melbourne Storm & will do anything in their power to keep the traditional NSW teams happy....

The complete opposite of the AFL

Bring on the hate, but I'm still warm to the idea of trading Jack Steven to Melbourne for picks 2 & 22

I love Jack, but I'm just getting too seduced by the idea of:

Pick 1 - Petracca
Pick 2 - McCartin
Pick 21 - Duggan
Pick 22 - Neal-Bullen

It just makes me drool....

I'd do a deal like that . Then more mids when we finish bottom again next year, with a priority pick aswell

Continual talk about Jack Steven. I was guilty of it once, but only if it bought in a player the calibre of J.Cameron.

But it's still an interesting discussion. Because as far as we know, he is still out of contract at the end of next season. Which is when he becomes a restricted free agent.

It's awkward. I would have liked us to sign him to an extended deal THIS season, or trade him out if he is unwilling to sign on further so we can dictate the terms. But, perhaps, him coming out of contract next season actually DOES give us the options (providing FA compo stays the same). IF he was to leave the club at the expiration of his contract next season, and presuming we finish bottom again, we would surely end up with Pick 2 as compensation (giving us pick 1 and 2 next season).

Obviously we need to take risks to build this list. We are coming from a long way back at the moment, and we will need to take some genuine risks to create the best possible list over the next 3-4 years. I'm not saying that will involve Steven but his current contract status does make it interesting. Probably the player at our club with the most currency. He happens to come out of contract at the end of next year, coinciding with his FA status. It will be interesting to see how we go about it. But his development and his style are exciting to watch and I hope we keep the bloke unless there is a possibility that we can't refuse in terms of long term success.

Yep. So Heeney, Weller, Hammelman, etc.

Rahul , who is on the AIS Academy books for next years draft? Schache? Mathieson? Parish?

I would think it would be a pretty close game
For us, unfortunately, just Parish, Mathieson and Burton. I'd keep an eye on Weitering, who is really as versatile as any player in the AFL (KPF, midfielder, wing, half-back, second tall defender) and Schache who is very capable.

In your opinion, would we be better off going Petracca this year and Schache/Burton next? Or McCartin this year and Parish/Mathieson next? Or is it too far out to call?

A bit too early to tell, after all Parish may only be 180cm, Mathieson might have finished developing (only a few weeks older than Duggan) and Burton may only be 192cm, which is an inch too short for a KPF. Take the best available talent, which could be Paddy or CP.
