For the love of god please don't let us go after Frawley. He is too old, too expensive and doesn't fit anything the club has been saying they will do (FA's from 2016).

I don't see why he would come to us unless no body else is interested, in which case we should take the hint and leave him at the Demons. Hopefully the Hawks go after him so even if we want him we don't get him.
By the time we become contenders again, he'll be close to 30, think I'll pass

We do have a lot of forwards though, will Dunell get a gig ahead of Markworth, Sippos, Billings?
Maybe we could trade Dunell and Ross for Jake Carlisle :D
I don't rate Carlisle, think his overrated, he started off last year well and now can't find his position, tall and straight kick but once he can't find the ball, mays well sub him out

He want's to be a defender ( who swings forward on special occasions ) , but Bomber wants him to be a forward.

Some serious substance abuse going on in this thread.

Looking at the Hawks and Cats, we probably should move on players who can't kick... That means CJ, Geary, Gilbert and a few others.

As far as Newnes goes, you invest so much time in development and just trade off your good players. If you have an abundance of - say - mids, then yes if the trade is a winner.

The reason Big Mac was traded was because the Hawks wanted him badly and were prepared to cough up for him.

Perhaps people should remember that we are building, not demolishing our list.

Honestly it's not just about who we are willing to trade but what currency those players have, who will pay for them and what we have in excess.

What we have in excess is half back flankers, young midfielders and small or underperforming forwards.
We are best suited to trading out half back flankers, our young mids are our investment in the future and our underperforming forwards have no value.
Those that have most value in other clubs eyes would be Steven, Armitage, Gilbert, Stanley and Gwilt.
The most speculative of those would be Stanley and the easiest for us to lose would be Gilbert, given the position he plays, the easiest to place would be Armitage though he won't get us the best return, and the most desired would be Steven, giving us the best return but being the greatest loss, Gwilt would be the hardest to place, Stanley's potential upside is his trade value and why we would want to keep him.
We won't get anything for our underperforming forwards.

Gilbert is the player with the worst skills that would command a price, the greatest return for the least sacrifice.

I still think Gilbert is the one we can most do without, who has AA [

I agree , GIlbert has some profile ( former AA ) and is still young enough to appeal.
We can keep Gwilt ( who is probably under-rated ) who along with Roberton, Delaney, Bruce, and Simpkin, gives us enough to get by, along with the chances of picking up someone else along the way.

I think Mav needs to be given a few games at some point this year so that he's got something to build on. Exposing him is vitally important, as we are set to lose Hayes, and I am expecting us to try to move Armitage on, as well. In this event, the only inside midfielder that we have to come in is Ross; I'd like to see Mav take that second spot, with a new big bodied midfielder taking Mav's spot on the rookie list next season (see: Adam Cockie).
Think Cockie missed him chance last year, I rate him but with Watters being sacked, its deflated his chances.
Watters knew him over over in W.A and apparently told him to play in the VFL, which pretty much signalled that he was interested!

I can't say I'm "expecting" them to try to move anyone on.
Based on last year , I think they will pass the word around that we are open to trading.
Teams will then ask about players they are interested in, and we will trade for them "IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT"
There is no point just offloading a player like Armo. We need to get a good deal for him.

I tend to agree with your thoughts.

Here's my take...

You would think that Jack is untouchable.

Armo, Gilbert, Ray, Geary, Simpkin... yes.

If weller comes good, then Curren may be of value.

Stanley... you don't give away KPP's. Let's see how he goes for the rest of the year. You'd only get rid of him if he doesn't improve. At worse he is a great depth player.

It will also come down to who we can draft. even if we get gun KPF, they won't be ready for a few years. So someone like Stanley may be a good transitional KPF. But either way, without Roo we will still be 1 short. Unless you keep Lee at FF and the new KPF at CHF. Mind you, Lee is yet to prove anything, so Stanley becomes more valuable to us.

I'd hate to see Gwilt go. He is one of our best kicks and mature thinker. But for a top 20? Yeah in a heartbeat.

But like you say, it comes down to what we have and what others need... supply and demand.

One thing you can bet your house on is that GCS and GWS will want to start marching up the ladder asap and will be looking for mature players.

And as much as I hate the idea, Melb will probably get another priority. Not that they deserve it.

Bottom line: As far as I am concerned, the club can do what it takes to secure the best possible talent. I want us to be a club that wins a flag. If that means hard decisions then so be it. we need elite skills. I don't care how nice a player is and will thank them for their service etc, but in the end if we want the big one, then we need to remove the B and C graders where possible.

The club has said there will be decisions fans won't like, similar to the McEvoy trade at the time.

The reason why I'm expecting Armo to be moved on, is because we'll still be looking to improve our standing in the draft, and he ticks all the boxes; holds reasonable enough value to be worth seeking out a trade, will be in his twilight years when we're seriously contending, is likely to garner a fair amount of interest from a number of suitors, and is reasonably expendable.

During last season, I had McEvoy pegged to be traded a long way out from the trade period, and it seems like Armo is in a very similar situation.

Geary Ray and Curren would either be steak knives or an attempt to uprade a pick, neither would demand a first rounder on their own.

IMO if we do trade Armitage, then were just building that hole between our older senior players and our newer kids even bigger, which I thought was an area which needed attention. Once our older guys retire, we will have a very young list, so our current middle aged players will soon be our leaders.

As I understand it the Hawks opened the discussion about McEvoy, and the Saints were simply receptive ( after we were offered a deal we couldn't refuse ).
It will depend who other teams are interested in.

Actually that I think is one way for us to end up gaining some very handy players without giving up much in return - take the excess from teams that are loading up.
Hawthorn are going to have loads of cap room. If they pick up Frawley, does another defender become available? Just like GWS getting Mumford from the Buddy-Swans fallout, there could be opportunities to grab handy players on the cheap.

the best return, and the most desired would be Steven, giving us the best return but being the greatest loss,
Surely if I'm apparently off my but for suggesting we'd trade Newnes or Saunders who might be a gun, then the club couldn't be letting Jack Steven go, who IS a gun midfielder that does more or less everything.

I remember that like it was yesterday, I'd like to know what just made him snap?
It's a well known fact that losing Everitt and Joel Smith was detrimental to our chances in 1997.

Less well known was that Lazr was injured as well, he has stated that Darren Jarman would not have been standing after goal number 2

and there is no reason not to believe him........

Pick 6 could still net us a good tall (Wright, Durdin, McCartin, Lever, Goddard) or one of Brayshaw/Weller/Lamb.

Failing that though we could look for a 2 for 1 type deal from someone ala West Coast with Collingwood last year?

Gold Coast have a compo pick tied to Geelong so maybe our first rounder for that compo pick (16-19 assuming Geelong finish top 4) and a player on the outer (Gorringe? Hutchins? Taylor? Help me out here Rahul )
If we got pick six, could we potentially do a trade of our first and third round to get pick 3-4?

We need to be pretty sure about what we'd get before trading players like this away.
Curren is a handy player , we wont get stronger by chucking him away as steakknives. We've don't well this year but drafts are players who "might " be good.
Geary and Ray less so.
