I suppose the other question is, will the Suns actually use thier academy pick?. Do they not have to drop one from the list list next year and with Bock retiring and Hall been delisted as the only 2 changes that are a given at the moment it does not leave a lot of room.
Brown is still on the list remember. He will be removed.

Murphy will also retire.

Thanks for that, wish I found this tread earlier. Have a great interest in the academy as there are a few lads from NTH QLD based down there that are doing good things and ups the profile of our game up here. Some of the top of my head Agita, Preuss, Nichols, Farley-Smith.

Stand out QLD youngsters are Weller, Keays and Hammerlam. Weller is a must get for us,,,, standout youngster for Broadbeach, QLD under 18 state side this year, and Southport. Member of Suns Academy and lives on the Gold Coast... Or do we let him go elsewhere, like we did with Zorko.!!!!!

Zorko is a bit different in that we had automatic rights to him. We don't get to select Weller with the Academy rules remember. He may even be gone by our first pick.

James Holland, this week's NEAFL rising star.
The SUNS academy product has enjoyed a purple patch in recent weeks according to Gold Coast’s NEAFL Development Coach Josh Fraser.

“I think during his last month’s footy he has been arguably one of our better players,” said the 218 game Fraser.

“His footy smarts allow him to play the half-forward role pretty well.”

Fraser said that he believes Holland’s nomination is a just reward for a player whose consistency and enthusiasm has been integral to the side.

“He’s been terrific when available, given his academy commitments,”

“[On the weekend] His effort was high and strong, and he uses his natural attributes well.”

Despite Holland’s footy schedule, Fraser said that he felt the Southport senior’s application had been significant.

“Sometimes the young top-up players come in and don’t really get involved with the Monday to Friday nuts and bolts,”

“But he has come in and really tried his guts out.”

SUNS Academy Head Coach Aaron Rogers praised the Queensland U18 representative’s newfound self-confidence after his return from the national carnival.

“I think he’s really starting to realise that he is a good player and in the past month he’s taken ownership of the SUNS team, rather than just feeling like he’s there to make up the numbers,” said Rogers.

“He’s been in the top possession-getters for a few weeks now, and the feedback from the players is that he’s starting to direct and lead out on the field, which is really positive.”

Rogers said that he has been impressed by Holland’s attentiveness to some of the star senior Gold Coast players.

“He’s been watching them closely,” said Rogers.

“Learning from their elite running ability and their elite footy ability. “

Rogers said that Holland’s hardnosed approach had contributed to his nomination.

“[On the weekend] He just competed all day. It was more of an accumulation of effort,” said Rogers.

“He was very consistent at going for the ball and winning it,” said Rogers.

As for the nomination, Rogers said he was confidant that it can further inspire his promising young pupil leading up to November’s AFL draft.

“It’s good for him to get recognised as a good player,” said Rogers.

“And I if he is going to get drafted he is going to have a bright future.”

Holland's full stats from last week:

12 kicks (3 ineffective), 15 handballs (6 ineffective), 4 marks (1 contested), 16 contested possessions, 5 tackles, 2 centre clearances, 6 clearances, 2 inside 50s, 6 rebounding 50s, 1 behind.

He had a team high contested possessions, tackles and rebounding 50s.

The encouraging thing with this is that throughout the year most of his possessions (I would say 90% of them) have been uncontested. The fact that he won so much of his own ball this week shows that he's not just an outside player.

Still stings

Does not sting as much as choosing Caddy (and to a lesser extent Day) before Heppell - Clayton gets a lot right but seems like he didn't do his homework in 2010 draft on Heppell's 'dodgy groin/OP' and Jack Darling's apparent 'questionable character'

And we cant get him cheaply :(

When is he able to play again? And probably just importantly train?
At the end of this year, meaning he is able to be drafted. Training comes with that.

The article mentioned he's in a pretty serious training regime at the moment with a PT, just to get him fit enough again.
