That theory has been peddled around on this board for a while now - that we can accumulate a treasure chest of midfielders, then trade for de-risked talls. But of course, it hasn't worked that way in reality.Theoretically if we are successful at drafting high end mids/smalls, then eventually we have a surplus and they become currency in a trade for a KPP. The key is quality for quality. For me it is a better strategy than drafting talls that the recruiters are not confident in. I think it is more probable that Weller will have a career at the afl high-end than Durdin for example. What Durdin needs to do to become a good afl players is significantly more difficult than Weller, as we have seen with players such as Clarke or Polak.
In an effort to generate team loyalty, the club hasn't traded out established best 22 players & when promising up & coming midfielders from our WAFL reserves get offered for trade, they have bugger-all trade value.
That theory would only work if we were willing to trade out starting mids with real currency (eg Barlow) and then promote one of our up & comers to take that player's role in the starting line-up. Can anyone really see the club doing that?
