List Mgmt. 2014 Draft

Rest assured, spearings are still very real, as are whistle dicks and Achilles cutting. Not overstated in the media at all.

I can see Duffy being moved to the rookie list. He played ok in the NAB games and half an hour into the season after 6 possessions and a goal had his season ruined by Jacob Brennan jumping on him. Deserves a season where he can show what he can do.

In round figures how many indigenous players have received tribal punishments, like spearing, in the history of the AFL for failing to meet 'community expecations'? FMD.

You are normally a shed load better than shit like that.

Ridiculous comment. Hang your head.

Just how many indigenous players from truly remote communities have we had?

Apenesslike is 100% correct.

What exactly is whistle dick? Obviously it's some form of mutilation, but doesn't sound like something you could google.

You really don't want to know, despite the google availability.

Ah I was unaware of the potential cultural implications of Josh's rookie listing, which complicates things and you would think unfortunately lessen his chances of staying on the list if he is unable to produce results before the season is out.

Wonder what Chris25 is thinking on how we might go.

I'm just putting the finishing touches on an early three round draft, based on the current ladder...

#12 Fremantle - Tyler Keitel
#32 Fremantle - Dean Gore
#50 Fremantle - Ashton Dickenson

Keitel is the mobile 193cm full forward from WA, he's probably the forward who would best suit our list - being shorter and more athletic than the likes of Apeness and Taberner. Gore is a 183cm and 86kg midfielder from SA, good in tough he has senior experience in the SANFL. And Dickenson is a 180cm defender/midfielder from Tasmania, because obviously we have to pick someone from down south. He's similar to what everyone would have liked Crichton to have become.

So, that probably gives away my thoughts on our needs - a 'shorter' tall forward and inside midfield depth. That could obviously change, especially with Ballard and Grey developing. But that's what I'd be looking at for the moment. Another 'shorter' tall defender (to balance the height of Smith and Pearce) and a crumbing forward (rookie draft) would be other options for me.

With our first rounder, I think we'd take Keitel or Caleb Marchbank (193cm defender) if available. Maybe Tom Lamb too - a third tall forward who would certainly appreciate having the size of Apeness/Taberner around him. Otherwise, we'd look towards midfielders - Jordan DeGoey and Corey Ellis being two who would help inside and fit our recent drafting patterns. Peter Bampton would be the alternative to Gore, along with Billy Evans and Connor Blakely.

Love your work Chris25. You sound confident that we will have a choice of some reasonal KPP's at our 1st choice; Keitel or Marchbank would be terrific.

How do you rate the chances of some of the smaller types slipping to our selection?

Is it possible/likely that some of the clubs picking before us may decide to stockpile some talls and leave a gun smaller player?

It's possible. I currently have 4 talls going before us picking - McCartin (StK), Wright (Bris), Durdin (Rich) and Lever (WC). But you could make a case for pretty much every team before us taking a tall. So you could add Goddard, Lamb and Marchbank into the mix, and maybe someone even takes Keitel early. Who knows.

This isn't a criticism at all as I enjoy your pre-draft information Chris.

However, out of interest sake, do you guys who take this reasonably serious on BF, ever go back and do the stats on how accurate you all are?

Genuine question.

Oh, I'm never particularly accurate. :p

My drafts are more heavily weighted towards my personal rankings of players. And I tend to value flair and potential a little higher than proven performances, whereas when your job is on the line you tend to draft a little differently to that. It's easier to take risks from the comfort of your own home. Some of the others on BigFooty try to predict things a tad more than me (and will do a final update on the eve of the draft which makes things look a lot better than it otherwise might) but just copying what the media says seems a little boring to me.

If we had pick 12 going by your calculations Chris25.

Hi Chris,

Love your work. A couple pages ago I had a very similiar top 3 choices for Freo, I had Marchbank > Clem Smith with the 1st rounder, Bampton > Gore 2nd rounder, then Viojo Rainbow as the third rounder. I was just interested to know why you had Keitel ahead of Marchbank if both are available? I honestly think Marchbank would be a steal at 12. Thanks mate.

Wasnt goddard touted a pick 1 chance?

Yeah, and he'll probably still go top 6 or so. But I think it's based more on name and size than anything else. He hasn't performed particularly strongly this year, and in my opinion does not look like a forward at all. He is, admittedly, a decent defender (and beat Keitel today) but someone like Marchbank is more natural in that position. I wonder if Goddard may struggle to really nail down a position, like a Tom Williams or even Kepler Bradley.

I don't necessarily have Keitel rated ahead of Marchbank, it's just how it ended up. Think maybe Fremantle would see him as the final piece in their forward line of the future, and that perhaps there aren't many players like him in this draft - most of the key forwards of any note are over the 196cm mark, and a little too similar to Taberner and Apeness. Pass on Keitel, and it's either Tom Lamb if available or take a chance on one of the NSW kids. Whereas, our defensive structure relies on discipline and not necessarily being the most talented player. There are some others who I think Ross Lyon could get the most out of. Suppose it depends on whether or not they rate Tanner Smith as a legitimate option though.

Don't Adelaide & Essendon forfeit their 1st rd picks this year??

Pickett is a little overrated IMO and I've seen a lot of him at South over the last 3 years. Very exciting player with seemingly all the tools, just doesn't do use them often enough for my liking. That's not to say I wouldn't like him running around in purple:D

Smith, I really like but needs to be more disciplined with the rough stuff. I don't mind him throwing his weight around as long as the ball isn't 50 metres further downfield, he tends to get sucked into the behind play stuff and give away silly free kicks.

Adelaide are back in, and while Essendon were stripped of their first and second picks they were given an end of first round pick as some sort of compensation.
