List Mgmt. 2014 Draft

Pickett is a big Freo fan. Let's hope he gets very home sick if GWS do pick him up.

He's actually an Eagles fan, because his dad had supported the Eagles before the Dockers came into the comp.

He did say that he would be happy to play for Freo if they picked him, but his preference is to go to West Coast.

Yeah I was pretty happy with Simpson too, and Apeness once I saw all his highlight videos. I just remember the drafts where we got Sheridan and Pitt with our first picks and there was just a bit of disappointment in that they were low profile skinny mids who we seemed to reach a bit for

Pitt wasn't a reach, most expected him to go to around pick 13 to GC, the disappointment was because he wasn't Darling or a KPP

I'd like to discus Dillon Viojo-:rainbow:.

Do yourself a favour, watch his highlights video on the Draft Machine. Guy has a laser-like left boot. Wouldn't mind him as a Duffield replacement/backup. Where our gameplan is based largely on the fast break, the value of a pinpoint pass over 50m is immeasurable (see Hilly at his best).

With pick 34, we may get him. Just depends on our first pick. One of our first picks will be a tall.

Pffft I dont even need to watch it.

I want him on his name alone.

The big question with guys like this is can they do it under pressure. No point having a laser boot if you have a tendency to spray it under a hint of pressure every time like Danyle. Pitt didn't like being rushed either for having such hype around his kicking.

Agreed on Pitt. Pitt was a slider, not a reach.

Though from memory, Shero was thought of as more of a reach. I thought so in any case. Freo seem to prioritise tank and size, and solid skills, so by Freo's criteria I'm sure he was best available... though many wouldn't have expected him to be picked that early. Was top 30 in Sheahan's prospects thing that year, so it wasn't a crazy reach though.

Hmmm apologies, I thought he was lower profile than that. I didn't mean to imply it was a bad pickup as I rated him while he was here. He just seemed to fit that mould of skinny "left field" first rounders we seem to love

Hill was another, as was Fyfe (even though he was technically early second round)

Nothing left field about Hill. We were always picking him at 3.

I remember all the talk being about how we were a lock for Rich right up until about a week before the draft. This article suggests the decision was made in the final pre-draft meeting

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2008-11-27/hill-rises-in-fremantle-draft-plans

"The newspaper reported on Thursday morning that the club decided to go for the West Perth midfielder at its final pre-draft meeting on Wednesday.
Subiaco midfielder Daniel Rich had been the hot tip for No.3 behind Jack Watts (who is expected to go to Melbourne with pick No.1) and Nick Naitanui (West Coast, No 2)."

I remember all the phantom drafts about a month out from the draft had Hill going late in the first round, and as it got closer he started climbing up and up to our third pick. Either way, he was a lower profile selection than some other first round mids, and one I'm very glad we made

I have faith in our list management model as it's been proven to be successful, but it just takes a bit of the immediate fun out of the first round when the player we pick up isn't high profile, and we have to wait to see them actually play to see why the club chose them....

Its interesting with the talk about the possibility of Wright sliding out of the top ten. If that does occur we could be in the situation of having to choose between maybe two of Wright, Durdin and Goddard. Who would everyone prefer out of those two?

we would have a massive forward line and perhaps too top heavy in the future if we had Wright, Apeness and Taberner with one of Apeness and Wright swapping with Clarke. I would probably still go for Wright as he would probably be the best available but I see Durdin as having more ceiling as he can play either end of the ground.

you mean sharing ruck duties with clarke or swapping with clarke in the team all together?

True, rucks that show an added ability to go forward or even split their time between ruck & forward are always going to be higher valued these days though I guess. Hence why Grundy slid IMO.

Wright might be a carbon copy of Apeness by the sounds of it. But I doubt that he'll last to our pick though.
