List Mgmt. 2014 Draft

So we can have faith that the mids we have taken will make it but not the talls we didn't.
History will show that the talls are riskier than the smalls in terms of the draft but with our list we can afford to take that risk, Weller was the safe option but will be in a list of five similar players outside the best 22, in two years time Lever/Durdin will be in a much smaller group of options.
People are putting a lot of faith in Apeness and Tabs of a very small sample size, Alex Pearce hasn't played a game.
The answer to talls apparently lies in free agency and the rookie list even though we haven't attracted a tall FA.
Gumbleton, Bradley and Smith left the senior list and we didn't replace any of them.

According to your argument Pearce is null and void because he hasn't play a game yet. Yet you say we lost Gumby and Bradley as though we actually lost best 22 players. How many games did they play in 2014?

Smith should stay a Docker when we rookie draft him.

What talls have we lost? No one will ever replace Pav, but Tabs has shown some signs that he can play at AFL level and will be at least serviceable. Every pre-season we should expect to see him improve.

Sandi's replacement is Clarke who would be 1st ruckman in 80% of AFL teams right now.

Macca an Johnson's long term replacements will hopefully be Pearce, Smith and Vandeluer with Silvagni and Ibbo to help in the short term.

Are all of our young players going to make it, no. That's why we have a few developing kids for most positions.

Right there is the problem with talls. Is it unfair to highlight Gumby given the injuries? Maybe. But those two were top end draft picks. A huge investment. Bradley managed to eke out a wonderfully enigmatic career, but in pure ROI he would have been a massive disappointment for the Bombres. But it is not just those two.

I was amazed to read Hasleby praising Smart's recruiting while advocating the idea that we should have gone tall in this draft. Smart recruited Polak, Murphy, Drum. All of those guys represent massive investment from the club, and all could still be contributing for us right now. Would they have been rated as highly as Lever, Durdin or Goddard? You bet they would.

The best recruitment strategy for talls is trading, and it is fraught with problems too. MacPharlin is our pin-up boy, but historically Geelong and Hawthorn both have stocked their talls from trades.

I thought the article in the Age highlighting the value of good second and third round drafting was interesting. It was clearly showing that this area of the draft creates the best chance for developing a strong list, as opposed to first round drafting in which clubs generally all do well. Getting players like Neale and Sutcliffe late creates significant list advantages (obvious of course).

So basically you can take a risk on a tall in the first round if you get the next two picks right.

Regarding your other post I am sure the club shares your view and it is probably more apparent on the value placed on rucks these days but Adelaide have lost more KP than any other club and went tall the pick after us. I don't think there is a right or wrong approach I can only hope Hogan is signed and sealed after the current contract expires.

All the way along the company line has been "It's difficult to lure non-Western Australian players across to Fremantle, so we will have to grow our own". And yet after all this rhetoric we don't seem to be honouring these statements.

Obviously we see the need to add a high quality key defender to the list otherwise we wouldn't have chased Frawley so hard during the free agency period.

I just can't fathom how the club could pass up the opportunity to get a high quality KPP into the club with our first pick and "grow them". Hopefully they do have something like signing Rance as a free agent in the pipeline otherwise it could be the difference between us winning and losing games in a couple of years time.

Some pretty fair points, especially the bolded point on Frawley. There's a reason Freo was reportedly offering big money to the likes of Harry Taylor, Cloke, Frawley - we desperately need a new CHF and CHB. Even in this enlightened athletic running era of modern AFL, the tactical advantages of having talls in these important structural positions remains relevant - Sydney are often cited as the example of the modern run & stun counterpunch modern football style. Yet they threw a record deal at Buddy, notwithstanding they already had Tippett and Reid on their list.

When the thorny issue of our failure to implement a substantive plan for the post Pav and McPharlin era is raised, a lot of posters get dismissive & say talls just aren't that important, and in any case, we're covered with Tabs & Apeness. Dont get me wrong- tabs and Apeness may well end up being good players, but I feel the weight of expectation on poor old Ape's shoulders already - if we planned for our key positions, the way we do for our rucks, he'd still be the 2nd understudy.

I reckon Weller will be an absolute gun & I'm happy to see him in purple, but if I'm really honest, I would probably have been slightly happier to see Goddard taken in his spot.

I guess I just don't believe the hype about Under-18 key position players until they have exposed form at AFL level.

Of all the players you listed only two have shown they can contribute at AFL level and they are already on our list.

I know everyone overlooked Fyfe too but the 4th picked tall back?

The way I see it, the club believes we have a gap in our list of Key Position players in the late 20s age bracket. We have quality veteran talls, and we have young talls who are developing well, but we are low on talls in between these age brackets. Drafting young talls will not fill this hole, it will merely deplete our future midfield. If we are unable to secure someone like Alex Rance through trading or free- agency next year, I wouldn't be surprised to see us pick up a mature state league tall or two after McPharlin and Pav Retire. (In a similar way to what Geelong did with JPod.)

If Goddard was on our list where would you see Apeness? I would still have him behind Taberner as an understudy to Pavlich. In the backline I would have him behind Silvagni and Pearce to replace MacPharlin.

I hope we take a punt on one of the young WA talls - Leorsch, Bevan, Cripps, Creeper or Kietel - in the RD.

Will probably come to nought but you never know. MJ, SNOS and Tabs came from the RD

Not sure if posted but Lloyd seems confident we have it covered.

http://www.perthnow.com.au/sport/af...ying-against-men/story-fniv64vs-1227139424711

Lloyd is adamant Fremantle has the generational change covered, with Apeness and Matt Taberner in attack, Alex Pearce and Smith in defence and back-up ruckman Jack Hannath.

He said the decision to draft midfielders was indicative of the club’s faith in their progress.

“We’re really happy with how they’re tracking,’’ Lloyd said.

“We have gone out of our way with talls over the last couple of years and they’re doing a good job, the ones that have come in. They’re really building.

“It’s important to keep topping up your midfield, so we’ve been able to do that which is good.’’

They are so happy with Smith they delisted him.

MJ was not in the Rookie Draft, he was taken in the PSD.

Why should we prefer locals on the Rookie List as opposed to preferring the best?

They intend to pick him up in the rookie draft if he is still there. He will be ready to upgrade when needed which is probably not now, considering Macca has played on and they rate Pearce high than Tanner. Tanner basically missed the whole season with injury.

Fremantle will not attract quality talls as free agents. They are a highly sought after commodity, and no one is moving to Perth from the eastern state clubs.

The club either grows its own or has none.

It seems Vandueleur doesnt come into consideration when talking about backs, is there any info on this kid from the regular
training reports?
I think we have several options down back, and even Pav could play CHB, I remember Carey doing this in several games.
Mayne looks good down there, and even Tabs could pinch hit if required. Hurley appears best suited for the Johnno role,
with the rookie draft to come.

Hasn't been very impressive TBH, but you know, could be anything.

Or nothing.

Pretty smart list management move isn't it? Pretty unlikely we are going to loose him, and instead recruited a higher ranked player to our main list than we would have had the opportunity to get on the rookie list.
Plus get to keep him 2 years on a rookie list to develop if we get him not taking a main spot

Interestingly - in an article from 2012 : "Adding to the intrigue was the best two key defenders – full-back Tanner Smith and centre half-back Tom Clurey – were both available at 24 and 25."

Another article suggested he was a young Dustin Fletcher, and another - the next Talia.

So 2 years on we've gone to rookie the top rated KPD from his draft.

I think it's still too early to judge him - just interesting looking at how the kids were spoken about at the time of the draft, and how we percieve them now. Same goes over the excitement (and angst) over the KPPs we didn't draft this year.

Haven't heard/seen much of Tom Clurey either TBH.
