List Mgmt. 2014 Draft

Now everyone every DH Victorian commentator has finally noticed the height of our midfielders they seem to have all decided that mids need to be over 190 cm tall.

I say we encourage this thought and let them bypass some quality talent at the circa 180cm mark so we can swoop in late and grab them.
Fyfe, Mundy and Barlow could be 5ft nothing and still towel up the opposition. Height helps, but it's their skill and talent that makes them so formidable. Like you said, this could be a good thing.

I think both Wiggles and us have already been in contact with him.
Why though? Sandilands, Griffin, Clarke, Moller, Hannath, Bradley. We are way stocked up in the ruck/ ruck-forward type. If we're going tall we should be grabbing legitimate forwards and defenders not, rucks and pinch hitters.

Like we did with Lachie Neale :D

I agree we need a few mid sized players. I don't think any team needs the 20 or so backup ruckman we have sitting in the WAFL, and we have our shorties sorted in Ballas Walters & D Pearce. Some more speed could never hurt either.

I don't think the so called "bad recruiting" we've done has actually been at all bad. Palmer played excellently for us, and it's not our fault he went to GWS. And Pitt was shaping up to be an absolute gun, it's not like they knew he'd have health problems. And this year's crop of new recruits seem to be shaping up pretty well!

The most difficult thing about this draft is conimg to terms that will be three players delisted that really don't deserve it.
I don't like that we will have to delist 3 players, agree that this is going to be the toughest call. I hope we don't but it's possible we may have 1, 2 or 3 retirements, depending on where our season ends. If we were to win the GF, I would not be at all surprised if all three made the call to end their careers at the ultimate high. Reality is that they are still all best 22, so there won't be any taps on the shoulder, and rightfully so.

I don't like to suggest who will be moved on yet, I guess there are a number of fringe 22 players that may wish to be traded for better opportunities, or have less upside than other depth, and that may well end up our best option.

There are also a few players that we have that are currently a luxury, in that they could do a good job in the 22 but have not yet earned an opportunity due to injuries or form of the players in the team, and these are the guys that may face the hard call. Gumby, Kep and Griff have all been bloody unlucky with injury, and now there are younger guys being groomed in the roles that they play. They are still light years ahead, however if they get reinjured or overtaken it may not bode well for them.

Yeah, look, I can't honestly agree with Griffin as I think he adds real value, and Gumby....well, who knows? He may yet give elastoplast a good name and play another season. Poor bastard.

IMO, Menegola is a certainty to get the chop.

But the other one is Kepler. For all of the superman talk around here, and the general fap-fest, he really doesn't cut it at the top level and never has.

Best to move him on and let the younger blokes get a run.

Sorry Kep, ya goofy bastard, but see ya later.

Menegola is rookie list, don't they need to cut 3 from the main?

Talk of Kepler getting delisted is seriously getting me down :(

Probably because I know it is a real chance of happening :cry::cry:

Can't get rid of any Pearce's till we obtain the full set. It'll make the commentators totally Pearce'd off

If the next one is named Zac it's gunna make it awful tough.

It's a harsh world out there.

Fair chance I reckon a player could be traded for a pick and reduce the delistings. I would however be nervous if I was Duffy and I would keep only one of Gumby or Kep but not both come the end of the year. Simpson has another year yeh? Seriously hope he can get things right.

Uncertain:

McPharlin (inj/ret)
Gumbleton (inj/delist)
Morabito (knee only)
Simpson (delist) - Probably get another year
Duffy (delist) - A lot could ride on Simpson
Bradley (delist) - A lot could ride on Gumbleton

Honourable mention;

Crowley - The type of player I wouldn't hesitate to give the tap to. But not yet.
Duffiled - Not long to go.
Pavlich - Will probably go on
Sandilands - will probably go on

Delist:

Menegola
Two of Simpson/Duffy/Gumbleton/Bradley

Trade Bait: - I think we have a flag winning list as is.

Silvagni - Game time, career longevity, money. Only if he wants to go.
Suban - Eternally on the fringe. Could be used to improve draft position.
C.Pearce - Only if he wants to go for game time, money, career longevity etc. I would not like to see him go.
Hannath - I really like Hannath but expect Ape will make him redundant shortly. Would keep unless Moller surpasses him.
Griffin - Does he get the gig as #1 ruck when Sanilands retires? If answer is no, trade now.

Free Agents: - I think we have a flag winning list as is.

James Frawley - Useful but too expensive if you believe the rumours.

2014 Draft:

I find it hard to identify a need in our side that can be filled by a draftee whilst Pav/Sandi/McP are still around.

In no particular order I think the list could use;

A fast small defender. Not sure who fits this bill. Clem Smith round 1?? Dillon Viojo-Rainbow round 3??
An inside mid. Peter Bampton round 1 Dean Gore round 2.
Another KPP (in particular a KPD) to cover for retirements. Would love Caleb Marchbank round 1.

1. Marchbank
2. Bampton
3. Viojo-Rainbow

Trade Targets:

A KPP would be delightful. As would a better round 1 pick in this year's draft.

I wouldn't mind de-listing Duffy to stick him on the rookie list.
Kepler to go I reckon.

After that? Menegola...and I can't really come up with another, other than Josh (not that I want that to happen) who is possible unless we have a retirement
Lester Smith was pretty good on the weekend too, as an aside.

I can see us delisting Duffy, Bradley and Simpson and then redrafting both of Bradley and Simpson, possibly on to our rookie list. That way we have Kep still at the club playing down at Peel mentoring our group of young talls coming through and also still on our list ready to upgrade in case of injuries. At the moment I don't think that Simpson really deserves to be on the main list of an AFL team and for this reason I don't think there is any risk in delisting him and placing him on our rookie list as I don't think any other team will touch him for obvious reasons. Some people take longer to mature so hopefully that is the case with Simpson, if it doesn't work out then we release him the following year from the rookie list.

I hate to say it but I reckon this could be McPharlin's last year. His body isn't holding up too well last couple of seasons and I take him as a proud individual who would want to go out on his own terms and not forced to retirement through injury or otherwise. Silvagni will become a serviceable stop gap while the kids develop.

Yeah, sounds good. Not withstanding that the team that actually won the GF had a relatively small (in terms of hight) midfield, the hight of our premier midfielders as a 'winning formula' is overstated.

As for drafting, I'll say this much, if we draft a few more key talls (and especially if Elvis plays on and SCOS stays), Peel are going to have one hell of a time fitting them in. Not that it's Freo's problem as such, just an observation.

Wonder what Chris25 is thinking on how we might go.

The team that won the GF also had more experience and a touch more class.

Sandilands signed on for 2015 at the start of the year and Pav is reportedly in talks to sign on, I'd be very surprised if all 3 retired at the end of the year.
