Hawthorn plays 2 key forwards and 2 rucks every week. When they had buddy they played 4 talls in their forward line. O'Brien and Spangher have both played this year alongside Roughhead, Gunston and Hale, giving them 4 talls.

Taberner played his 4 games while Pavlich was injured. In at least 2 of those games he was our only key forward. He's only played 2 games this year despite excellent WAFL form.

Excellent? I do not think that word means what you think it means.

How was his form in the AFL?

No, I think if we had signed Cloke or Reiwoldt, it's more likely that they would have been played as our primary key forward, and Pav would have played a different role. He's one of the most versatile players in the comp and could play anywhere.
You are talking crap.

How was his form in the AFL?

He kicked 2 goals in his first game. His form was actually pretty good. Against Sydney our disposal was terrible and he got subbed off after half time. So it's hard to say he's had much of a go at AFL level this year.

It also worth pointing out that in his first game this year where he played deep forward, Pav got off the leash. That's kind of the point of playing more than 1 key forward. It's not like I'm saying Taberner is a superstar who is being hard done by. I am saying that playing 2 tall forwards is a tried and true game plan and there are good strategic reasons for doing it. Namely that they each only have to play against 1 defender.

I'm not really that worried who plays out of Tabs/Apeness/Gumby or even Kep. I just think playing 2 tall forwards is standard for a reason. Not having a 2nd tall to play probably cost us the GF last year as it enabled Lake to dominate our forward line.

Whoever plays as the 2nd tall is unlikely to dominate since our mids look for Pavlich most of the time. But what it will do is enable Pav to win more contests as he won't have to contend with being double-teamed every time.

Who did he play on in his first AFL game this year? (For those playing at home, this is a trick question because Essendon had no tall backs playing in that game through injury)

Def. true that Gumby AND Pav was the plan coming in to the season. Question is coming into finals has the plan changed permanently because Gumby was injured or will he revert to two tall plus resting ruck. Hawthorn and Sydney have a stacked forward line of talls and NORMALLY winning teams in finals do have at least two good talls to grab the more pressured kicks coming in.

We got to within 3pts on GF day. A day when inaccurate kicking cost us a flag. While 2 Key forwards would be nice, we seem to be doing ok with the mosquito fleet.

A few things have changed in my draft, with Fremantle having three new picks...

15. Fremantle - Jordan DeGoey (187cm, 82kg midfielder from Oakleigh Chargers, VIC)
34. Fremantle - Jake Johansen (171cm, 63kg midfielder/forward from South Adelaide, SA)
53. Fremantle - Jesse Watchman (196cm, 94kg forward from West Adelaide, SA)

I would be stoked with this on draft day. Johansen would give us another option as a quick onballer/ forward if Simpson doesn't pay off. I have been quite keen on Degoey the last couple of weeks, Chris what kind of player is he and what position do you think he could play for us? also Watchman seems to be slipping down the order is there any reason for this? Thanks

Too many J's in my opinion.

I've heard my mate* talk about Jesse Watchman for the Pies so I dunno if he'd last that far down the draft. Of course their first pick will be taken up by Moore, so we might be lucky if no other clubs have noticed him.

*not really a mate, just an acquaintance because I can't be mates with a pies supporter.

I wouldn't get too excited. I'm sure someone will pip us to the post. We will, after all, be the last pick in each round.

{S} GWS are a prime example of this, they more than anyone need a few more talls on their list {S}

I posted a profile of Jordan De Goey in my draft thread. Compared him to Mundy, so that's what I'd be developing him as.

As for Watchman, he hasn't had a great year. Some injuries, some other questions. But he is fully fit now, and not playing for SA in the Championships. Probably not the best fit for us, but might be best available come the third round.

Is there any good Pearces available this year Chris?

My only concern with DeGoey is being a Vic Metro boy the go home factor down the tracjk if he starts to show a bit.
Do you put any stock in Freo considering this factor on draft day i.e. if another player from WA/SA/Tas/Vic Country is rated the same they would go for that option versus Vic Metro? I know Cuddles Connolley had this policy to his recruiters with what draft picks he left them, Mark Harvey seems to have as well.
Not sure it would apply so much to later picks but in particular the first one.

I can't imagine so. Over the last few years we have taken Apeness, Sheridan and Crozier early on and they are all Vic Metro boys.

Who's that super quick West Aussie who trained with us? How early will he go?

It will be a very lean draft if we were to rely just on West Australians. Not many will be drafted.

Think we had Pickett, Ah Siu and Walsh with us? Pickett is the super quick one, and I think could go anywhere from 5-15.

Can't see us looking at a guys 171cm tall

Don't see why not. Especially if we picked someone like De Goey first, we'd be well stocked for big midfielders. Whereas imagine if Ballantyne went down. We're already signficantly worse off without having anyone to replace Walters.
