6: Fremantle – Tom Lamb

Position: Forward/midfielder

Height: 192 cm, Weight: 83 kg, DOB: 19/10/1996

Club: Dandenong Stingrays

Projected draft range: 6-20

Plays Like: Brendon Goddard

It was nowhere near the National Championships Tom Lamb was hoping for, in fact if anything the carnival showed us what Lamb is lacking, rather than what he brings to the table. Lamb was often found out defensively and struggled to involve himself over four quarters in each game he played. However, despite his inconsistencies he still offers plenty. At ground level, Lamb is solid; he tracks the ball well for a player of his size and uses the ball well by hand. His marking game, particularly contested, mirrors that of what key forwards are offering up this year. He reads the ball well in flight, and although he can sometimes double-grab a mark rather than take it cleanly, he still marks well overhead and out in front and isn’t one to submit to a chest mark very often. Although Lamb’s kicking efficiency around the ground might be a weakness at this stage, he understands the momentum of the game, and often plays on when he can, backing his speed and athleticism and thumping kick to propel his team into attack. The big tick for Lamb is his versatility. He can play up on the flanks, on a wing or push deep forward. In the final game of the National Championships he was stationed across half-back where he had his best game of the carnival, finishing with 14 disposals at 86% disposal efficiency, including six marks.
Freo written all over him.

fair call - only went with Kietel as he is from WA - go home factor

Lamb's write up on Paige's phantom draft

Tom Lamb’s biggest bug bear is his body language and attitude. Despite this along with a mixed bag of form during the National Championships, Lamb is still very much in the frame to be a first round selection, but I’ve got him sliding here to the second round. As much as it separates the cream of the crop on offer towards the pointy end of the draft, the National Carnival also has a habit of exposing areas of weakness in players. For Lamb, it showed us a frustrating conundrum in Lamb’s game, whereby he could pull off something stunning, and follow it up with a butchered kick, a stray handball or just an inability to apply himself for four quarters. Despite these inconsistencies, he still offers plenty. At ground level, Lamb is solid, given he tracks the ball well for a player of his size and uses the ball well by hand. His marking game, particularly contested, mirrors that of what key forwards are offering up this year. He reads the ball well in flight, and although he can sometimes double grab a mark rather than take it cleanly, he still marks well both overhead and out in front. Although Lamb’s kicking efficiency around the ground might be his weakness at this stage, he understands the momentum of the game, and often plays on when he can, backing his speed, athleticism and thumping kick to propel his team into attack. Above all, the big tick for Lamb is his versatility.

Player Update: Sliding. He’s had an ordinary finals campaign, and has had a mixed bag this year after a stellar bottom-age season in 2013. Massive upside presents the team that’ll take him.

That write-ups reminds me of Kep for some reason...

Thank you. Is there a place where all the combine results are available?

That 12.2 in the beep is bad, but the 12.12 for the 3km is also shocking. If he didn't have a raging flu or injury, those numbers are almost bad enough to stop him getting drafted, considering he's not really rated a top 20 talent to begin with.

Clem was rated top 10 at this time last year. Had a poorish U18 campaign, but did some good physical work in getting WA their only win when moved forward. His football season finished a month ago. Pretty easy to lose condition if you are not in a structured regime. You just have to love his physicality though. Would terrorize small forwards.

His short distance speed runs were good.

He would be listed under the "project player" group that our new running coach Sam Menegola is taking for lap practice in preseason.*

*Not actually happening.
I'm not a recruiters A-hole and TBH, I don't have the first clue who we realistically should and shouldn't be targeting, but personally, I would not take Smith before our third round selection, and would rather have him via the rookie draft. I get the feeling he's not even going to come close to living up to the hype.

I'd agree with you. Oozes talent, but you'd get the feeling the hours of training and other responsibilities would be too much for him.

Garlett by the sounds and from reading articles ticks all the correct boxes and already has the work ethic to succeed. Could be a very handy 2nd rounder, but I doubt he'd slide that far.

Hmmm not so sure, given this comment: "Lamb was often found out defensively"
They were discussing him as a possible pick #1 if he had the defensive side and consistency there.

That's the sort of player we would want at a mid teen pick isn't it? A slider with a deficiency we can look to fix through attitude?

In a lot of cases these things can change with maturity and just by being in an AFL environment.

And watching his highlight's on youtube, kicks with both feet without a problem in traffic. I had difficulty working out if he was a left footer or a right.
Yeah, watched his highlights last night. I reckon the Egirls would be into him in a big way. Would be surprised if he's still available at our second.
