List Mgmt. 2014 Draft

We've got form taking players who have been out of the system a while....

You're right - but given the compromised drafts we've had of late due to the expansion teams, I think we've had to look for players like this.

Seems to me the guys who have huge talent, but have spent less time in footy, are the players who are most likely to slide to lower spots simply through a lack of exposure. I note our most recent Irish recruit would also fit this profile, along with Apeness and Grey. I don't think it's an accident that the AFL's biggest ever push for raw overseas talent coincided with the longest sequence of compromised drafts in the game's history.

This year is a very different story, and happily enough has all the signs of being a super-draft. As Bondy said, we haven't had a first pick this high in years - the depth of talent across all positions is considerable, and maybe it's my imagination but the list of smokies seems massive this year!

Picking the best available at 13 is going to be a right bitch, and unless there's an obvious gimmie like Pickett lying around, we're going to be spoiled for choice. I'm excited by the possibilities, but awful-bloody-glad it's not me having to make the call.

To find hidden gems, you have to start with some unlikely looking rocks that other's have already dismissed - and in the past we've done that well.

That being said, in previous years our selectors were trying to spot diamonds in the rough that were surrounded by gravel (no disrespect intended) . This year, we're trying to spot a polished diamond in a field of cubic zirconias - which is another matter entirely.

And watch the fall out when we pick the next left field selection like Neale or Sutcliffe. Neale who! Sutcliffe who! will come the screams!!

I am interested, but I have been savaged to many times by highlight clips - remember Houghton!

It's interesting though - those assessments of priority are based on media/consensus view, but the club's rankings probably look completely different due to the filter they apply for the criteria that they feel are more important

It's a lot of work, but i'd be curious to see a ranking based purely on endurance, disposal efficiency by foot and other metrics that the club seems to be looking at historically - and see how that differs to the media view

Judging things on consensus/media view for the Melbourne Cup would have had us salivating over Admire Rakti (6), Lucia Valentina (7), Signoff (8) - ahead off Protectionist (8), Red Cadeaux (21), Who Shot The Barman (21)

The club seems pretty good at finding the value picks ahead of the consensus favourites :p

I hope your right, although going on our history it is more like my Melbourne Cup gambling. I had the 2nd, 3rd and 4th horse for the Quadi but missed out on my first selection.

You are right. I was the draft when we called out Fyfe, I was pissed off. Anyway, still fun and enjoyable being an armchair recruiter.

Yeah I reckon - with the exception of Mora, all of first round picks of late have been more project players than 'ready first season' sorts

We seem to go for the skinny tweener with top 5 'potential' ahead of top 10 'today'

Which I don't mind - the ones that we've developed are amazing (or will be) - Fyfe/Crozier. The ones that failed were for issues outside of our control

Kyle Langford. If we pick him up in the first round I'll be very happy. Sounds like he could be anything. In fact if I was a betting man I'd have money on him becoming a star of the competition.Plus he's still only 17.
If he's available at our pick, if it were me I'd pull the trigger.

Knightmare and the Inside Football mock have us taking Cory Ellis who is..wait for it....a skinny half forward flanker/mid type.

Something of which we are in dire need.
