List Mgmt. 2014 Draft

Clem Smith seems like a risky prospect to me. Could easily be delisted within two years. His fitness is so poor than an AFL Pre-Season is going to be ridiculously hard for him and he might not be able to cope. He's not the best kick of the Footy/decision maker either. I would be very wary of drafting him with our first two picks.

I reckon a Rookie spot at best.

Everyone should watch this before Thursday:

I already know that I am gonna freak out on Thursday.

Apologies in advance for anything silly I might say. :p
I've tried to combat this tendency myself by avoiding reading/watching too much of the potential draftees. Having spat the dummy previously, I figure it's a safer move.

The only draftee I'm confident I'll have heard of will be our first rounder. Fully expecting 2nd round onwards to be unknowns (to me anyway).

Even if we miss a tall in the first round this year, there's apparently a lot of talented mids/flankers/third talls running around that could be very handy additions to the list. Am happy for the club to pick up a highly rated mid/flanker type if the top line talls are already taken. Durdin or Goddard would be ideal, but if they aren't on the table, (or more likely... they are but the club doesn't pick them up) then I'm sure the fella they pick will be worth it.

I think I've reconciled our recruiting of unknown players with our later picks. They're 50/50 anyway and we have a good track record with them. I just hope they don't recruit a complete unknown with pick 13 or I'll spontaneously combust.

Lloyd believed this year’s draft was very strong and even.

“There’s a good half-a-dozen at the top end and then it really evens out,” he said.

Fremantle did not make any trades in the off-season and managed its list to gain an extra pick at the National Draft.

Lloyd said the potential depth of this year’s draft as well as the club’s recent history with late picks left it extremely pleased to have four selections in 2014.

“We saw in 2011, Lachie Neale was our fourth pick and Cam Sutcliffe our fifth, and then Lee Spurr in the rookie draft, so I think the draft’s deep enough to have some picks,” he said.

“There’s some players we’re really excited about that should be there later in the draft.

“We were also really careful with pick 13. We didn’t want to tamper with that pick at all.

“It was either try and improve our position from 13 or hang on to it.

“We go into Thursday night really excited about the players we’re looking at with that pick.”

According to the main board the late mail is that Petracca will slide - something about late testing.

Would throw a spanner in the works.

IMO Wright, Goddard and Durdin will be gone by our first pick. The draft is deep and clubs will know if they grab a top tall prospect early there will still be plenty of good mids in Round 2 and into Round three.

I think we will grab Marchbank or Lever. Both have had injury concerns though.

Why so negative Yak? He's rated by some as "the state's most talented prospect" and he won the agility test at the combine.

Fitness can always be improved with a bit of hard work.

You see players who ran 14+ beep tests struggle with Pre-Season training. Clem ran 11.2 beep test which is sensationally poor. And most ruckman would've beat his 3km time trial by over a minute. From my own observations players with naturally low level endurance really struggle to increase it. Look at Moller, Crichton, Faulks and other players in our recent history. I wouldn't be against drafting him with pick 54 but hopefully not earlier.

And I really struggle to see how he is the state's most talented prospect when compared to Pickett and Garlett.

Couldn't be worse than what Sonny was like originally surely? His suspect kicking is a bigger concern for mine, have a feeling he'll fall to the rookie draft or go pretty late.

Fair 'nuff. I just reckon we have plenty of foot soldiers with big tanks. It's the elite talent that will take us to a flag, IMO.

I'm all for recruiting a skilled player. I just don't think Clem Smith fits the bill for our first two picks. I would even be tempted to pick Garlett with our first pick. But a KPP is needed more at this point.

As well as his low fitness base, from the footage I've seen, Clem Smith appears to be very one sided as well; not sure he has a left foot. I would not want to see our 2nd round pick go to him.

I am getting a serious case of deja vu about some of these Smith comments and the comments being made about Ballantyne in 2008

It just wouldn't be draft day unless there was a bigfooty meltdown about our second round pick

Clem's season finished six weeks before draft combine. Unlike most of the others he had to prepare for it on his own. He still won the agility test although his endurance was poor he wouldn't be Robinson Caruso in finding training alone hard. He comes across as a player that would thrive in a professional environment.
