just warning you guys
I had drinks with a richmond board member not long ago & he let it slip that the Tigers are preparing a war chest aimed at your superstar, Fyfe
but, I'm that is expected.

The thing about tigers supporters including board members they live on hype and their no way they are going to get Fyfe, they need to signed up Cotchin and Rance. Most of the Victoria teams will make a bid for Cotchin, and Magpies, Cats, Hawks, Ess, Melb,Saints, and Blues will have salary cap space.

Rance will have offers from Cats, Magpies, Melb, Saints, GWS, Brisbane, Crows, Port, Blues, Roos, and Freo.

Jack riewoldt and Fyfe will be a free agent in the same year.

By the way, we have a bigger war chest.

Especially by the time Fyfe is out of contract, Pav Sandi and McPharlin will all be retired.

I think he might have meant preparing a war chest to retain cotchin and Rance in this years FA period.I can see 1.5m per yr being allocated to Cotchin and Rance.

You mean they are preparing it for Dangerfield, the one not in contract for years.

So pretty much what happened at St Kilda with Ross Lyon is happening again at Fremantle. The long-term future is being compromised in the hope that we can have short-term success.

Drafting a midfielder like Weller who can have an impact next year instead of drafting someone like Lever/ Goddard who will be there to take the reigns when Pav and McPharlin retire and be the cornerstone of our next era.

Relying on signing a free agent who comes out of contract next year and - going by the law of averages - is unlikely to exercise their free agency option to make this draft period a success is fool's hope.

And, as far as using the rookie draft as an avenue to address our KPP needs - The players are available in the rookie draft for a reason, they are about 1 in 50 chance of making it as A-grade players. If it was that easy to just draft an A-grade KPP in the rookie draft then every club would have that mindset.

The reality is that pretty much 9/10 elite KPP's come in the first round of the national draft.
I guess when reading the post you skipped the first sentence?

LOL so is every other club in the league. He's not exactly on chump change. Will have to be one hell of an offer.

Fyfe supported richmond as a kid and is a free agent at the end of his contract. Big money lured away Ablett and Franklin but don't expect us to let Fyfe walk. We'd match the offer and name our price on the trade table. Unless richmond finish 18th that year there would be absolutely nothing they can do but give us what we want because whoever finishes last will take Fyfe at no.1 in the draft without blinking.

So to put it simple. Fyfe is going no where.

Abletts dad and brother were already living on the Gold Coast prior to him leaving Geelong. GC also had a higher salary cap and a squad full of kids so they could pay him squillions more than anyone else. Franklin got a deal that eventuated in the AFL blocking Sydney bringing in FAs and trades this year due to them basically rorting the COLA. They're exceptional circumstances. But, I do agree, Fyfe isn't going anywhere.

Lol, it would be remiss of all other 17 clubs NOT to "aim a war chest" at Fyfe when he next comes out of contract, he'll be the best player in the league by some margin at that stage.

Tell your drinking buddy, good luck trying to lure our captain away

For Rance? Alex Rance?

We'd be paying overs by a massive margin there.

I agree.

Don't believe we need to chuck too much at Rance when Silvagni has shown he is able to step up when required. I think our backline went OK even with McPharlin and Johnno missing reasonable chunks of the season through injury in 2014.

Our back half has preformed better than you would expect them to when some of the regulars are out injured, perhaps it's a case of the Lyon system being able to wring more out of the defensive output of the team and the specialist defenders because the team is so defence orientated and well drilled.

What we need most of all is more goals and perhaps if our draft picks can improve the midfield quality and quantity we will be able to pump the ball into the forward line better and more often and lock it in there for extended periods. Genuine forwards in Mayne, Ballas, Walters, Tabener and Pavlich need to stay fit and stay in the forward line and leave it up to the mids to get the ball to them rather than get too involved in helping out in the midfield battles. They can't kick goals if they are in the centre square.

Are you not reading the post that I quoted. The poster said "Mids take less time to develop, some will be ready next year", it is not the first time that I have heard this rationale on this board.

I like the selection of Blakely as well, I only have a problem with not selecting a KPD at our first pick when arguably the best two of the draft in Lever and Goddard were available.

Posters make a lot of comments like this based on player types we may need, forgetting that the recruiters are comparing 2 actual players that they are very familiar with, not just a nameless quality tall with a quality small. Eg what if Weller is as good as Hill, and Lever is as good as say Apeness? You wouldn't let another Hill slip by just because we need talls.

Against who though? In the finals we struggled with Dawson and Silvagni but not necessarily with tall forwards. We will struggle with Dawson and Silvagni there if both MJ and Mcpharlin aren't there. I'd be more than willing to trade our first rounder (or another pick) for a key defender next year if the right player is available. (24-27 year old and not a spud) We need a leader back there in the post McPharlin and Johnson era.

Rance would be ideal as he'd cost nothing but there are other options. We need richmond to play terribly next year to get him though I reckon and even then we will be amongst most Victorian clubs and probably the Eagles in trying to get his signature.

I think the problem here in regards to this draft is the key defender there won't be ready to be the players we need them to be quickly enough. We didn't get the key defenders we needed in 2012 (except maybe Smith) and might need to pay a price for it next off season. The fact we were looking at someone as average as Shoenmakers says a lot about the position we are about to find ourselves in. It's not a disaster by any means but something has to be done in the next couple of off seasons imo.

I don't think serious recruiters/clubs draft with the intention of plugging holes for the following season. I would think 2-3 years would be more suitable. By that time the kid would be 21-22ish, will have filled out, played 20-30 games and would have show something at AFL level.

The drafting to cover for Pav, Sandi, Macca, Johnson has already happened in Tabs, Apeness, Clarke, Hannath, A Pearce, Smith, Vandueleur. The defenders are probably a bit behind schedule but we have Silvagni and Ibbo to help bridge the gap.

It is ridiculous for people to think we can ever cover for our club greats with first year players. They have to be allowed the time to develop, mature and learn the game. Yes there is a clock counting down as Pav and the like enter there twilight years but we have to follow the process. What we lose from the decline of Pav, Macca, Sandi is somewhat mitigated by the continual improves of our 3-6 year players (Fyfe, Walters, Hill, Clarke, Barlow, Crozier, Ballas, Sutcliffe, Neale)

Weller, Blakely and co are here to replace Mundy, Crowley and Duffield when the time comes.

Some poor drafting has left us with no 24-27 year old KPPs but we couldn't go abandoning the plan hoping Lever would be good to take over Macca in a years time. That's what desperate clubs do like the Doggies with Boyd. If we can lure a free agent (Rance) over that's great, but you can't build that into the plan. We just have to trust in the drafting plan and hope the development of our youth is successful.

I have confidence that our recruiters know what they are doing. What's going on at Peel is what I'm worried about.

This is a good point. This wasn't the draft to select the replacements for those guys as it's really a little late for that, needed to do it last year and the year before which we did.

I wish I had the faith you guys do in tall players we didn't draft to live up to their reputations.

So we can have faith that the mids we have taken will make it but not the talls we didn't.
History will show that the talls are riskier than the smalls in terms of the draft but with our list we can afford to take that risk, Weller was the safe option but will be in a list of five similar players outside the best 22, in two years time Lever/Durdin will be in a much smaller group of options.
People are putting a lot of faith in Apeness and Tabs of a very small sample size, Alex Pearce hasn't played a game.
The answer to talls apparently lies in free agency and the rookie list even though we haven't attracted a tall FA.
Gumbleton, Bradley and Smith left the senior list and we didn't replace any of them.

It seems Vandueleur doesnt come into consideration when talking about backs, is there any info on this kid from the regular
training reports?
I think we have several options down back, and even Pav could play CHB, I remember Carey doing this in several games.
Mayne looks good down there, and even Tabs could pinch hit if required. Hurley appears best suited for the Johnno role,
with the rookie draft to come.
