List Mgmt. 2014 Draft

If I'm the West Coast list manager I'm hoping that one of Yeo, Sheed or Tunbridge will fill the role that Priddis plays as the strong inside, slow extractor. Yeo being the fastest of the three.

So I can understand why they didn't pull the trigger, their biggest hole is X-factor small forwards and genuine midfield pace. They have Rosa, Wellingham, Shuey who fit that quickish bracket but nobody I'd be saying is lightning.
Tbh I'm wondering that about a few cubs, there must be something seriously wrong with this bloke. 189 and growing, good endurance and speed, comfortable off either side and Fyfe like on the inside. Seems like he could have gone much higher? West Coast in particular should have picked him to attempt to dislodge Priddis in a couple years time but maybe Duggan will be the man for them.
The same could be said for Simon Black, Harry Taylor, Sam Mitchell, Nat Fyfe, etc, recruiters dont always get
it right. Blakey is a pure footballer type, with no screaming X factor, he just does everything well. Lamb is
their boom or bust pick, has X factor like NN, and have similar output.

Possibly like Tom Swift as the best junior in Australia

Yeo is pretty lightning quick and unlike some of our guys he actually uses it.

These are his draft combine results (a while back I know, but it's all we have to go on):

"He was a standout at the NAB AFL Draft Combine, being the quickest in the agility run (7.80 seconds), having the best standing vertical jump with a score of 78cm and running 2.91 seconds for the 20m sprint, showcasing his athletic ability."

I would say Yeo is probably the great white hope for our midfield, by far the player I most excited for in 2015. Aside from his pace, the thing that separates him most from our midfielders is his ability to take an overhead mark (aside from when he lost his teeth). I'd pretty much put a line through Tunbridge, he's an athlete and a unit, but not a footballer. I think Sheed will end up a very handy player, but not someone you build a midfield around.

I agree with your comments about lacking a genuine small forward. I was all over Charlie Cameron in the lead up to last years draft, was very disappointed we didn't take a punt on him. Looked good for the crows this year. The other position West Coast lack is a small lock down defender. Bennel is getting better defensively and provides great rebound out of defense, but a player like Nick Smith would really help us stop getting cut up by small forwards.

What was the deal with Spurr in 2014, playing injured? I was a huge fan of his in previous years, but I wasn't impressed with what I saw of him this season.

With McPharlin missing the defensive unit seemed more conserved with their man than usual, less creative and less helping out each other. Spurr got the rough end of that a lot.

Apparently Connor Blakey was a flanker in previous years before Swan Districts saw him as a big bodied mid. His 20m sprint time 3.19 suggests there is room
for improvement in a professional environment.
Will be interested to see if he could take Sutcliffe position, and Sutty moved to a midfield role.
As for not recruiting Talls, didnt Sutcliffe blanket Darling in a previous Derby? With Mundy, Mayne, Sutcliffe, Blakey, Hurley, Pearce, all capable in this role, why panic?

Insert gif of Darling throwing his head back.

So we should concede that our second stringers are rubbish? Or purposefully target wash-ups and has-beens and never-wills? I mean we tried that last year with Gumbleton, Sylvia, and maybe we should grab Robbie Nahas this season if we want to keep it going!

The issue with flight risks is that it'll happen if someone's from interstate or entertaining million dollar deals. So far most guys have stuck fat because the team's been winning most games. I still think concentrating on home-state drafting is the smartest thing to do (ala the Crows and Eagles) but I don't get this post. I just don't.

You have seen the Eagles list, right?

I think some of you need to get a reality check .
Pav was in the best shape he has been in for 3 years for the 2014 season and he was struggling to impact the score board because he had no serious support from another tall .
Sandi had his best year physically as well in 2014
What was missing was Griffin coming back from his ACL and Clarke with his knee injury and not being able to do a full pre season .
Alex Pearce and Apeness have got to get through their second preseason without injury to press their claims for a spot in the best 22 .
Clarke has to get out on the track as early as possible after his end of season surgery .
Griffin has to train the house down to get his fitness back up to where it was before he did his ACL .
If and I do mean IF that happens then we will maintain our place in the top 5 . Forget about Sylvia and concentrate on Duffy getting through the preseason
then and only then do we have a chance of going further this coming season .
The players that have their careers on the line this year are Sylvia , De Boer ,Clancee , Moller , Smith , Suban , Vandeleur ,Griffin , Morabito and Hannath .
The player I expect to be pushing hard for games are Slivagni ,Grey ,Ballard ,Sheridan , Alex Pearce , Crozier and Duffy .
The other guys who will have to show improvement to keep their jobs are Sumich , Sheperd and Kirk .

I think that although we are very excited about getting Blakely that he probably doesn't have as high a ceiling as say a Tom Lamb who the Eagles chose instead.

What makes you say that? If you're going off the highlights package surely you would have Blakely ahead of Lamb 'Shanks'.

The media gave Lamb the 'Boom or Bust' tag to describe his inconsistency. I've already got my anti-Eagles glasses on so my opinion is fairly biased but i am interested in why you think Blakely will be eclipsed by Lamb.

Question Dockers fans

2014 was a strange draft and players went all over the place in terms of unexpected destination

In lead up Freo were interested in Boekhorst who has run and place but took chance on Lachie Weller who feel will lack conditioning as division2 player. Do you think experience and hard running should of taken priority over Weller?

You're not biased, it's obviously he's mutton dressed as lamb.

Apologies if this is already posted here or elsewhere but just noticed it up on the Club's web site.
Brad Lloyd in the aftermath of this year's draft reinforcing the Club's philosophies.

I really like the sound and look of Connor Blakely. The comment re: that he plays close to the Ruckmen is what struck me from his highlights reel. We could do with more guys getting their hands first to the ball from Sandi's tapwork.

Him & Fyfe in the same midfield is going to be fantastic.

After watching Apeness, Alex Pearce and Taberner running about on the weekend and liking their games (and Tanner Smith in the wings) I started thinking about the draft and wondering what we may be thinking about with our first couple of picks and with trades/free agency.

I feel we're a bit exposed for pace at the back and a smallish/mid size, quick defender may not go astray.
Like a Jarman Impey or Nick Smith
Another ball winning, inside midfielder although if Sylvia and Morabito continue on their upward path this may be less pressing.

If Josh can get his stuff together we're ok on the outside.

One more CHF/FF type? A utility? Or do we take the runner with the best skills?

Raised the questions and we got the answers. Inside and outside mids, goal kicking forward mids, and a smart half back

Theoretically if we are successful at drafting high end mids/smalls, then eventually we have a surplus and they become currency in a trade for a KPP. The key is quality for quality. For me it is a better strategy than drafting talls that the recruiters are not confident in. I think it is more probable that Weller will have a career at the afl high-end than Durdin for example. What Durdin needs to do to become a good afl players is significantly more difficult than Weller, as we have seen with players such as Clarke or Polak.
