Probably more a consequence of our development failures than drafting ineptitude. Watts, Morton, Gysberts, Blease, Tapscott - even Addam Maric - all had good games at AFL level, and have shown enough talent. They've just never taken it to the next level.

Probably at the AIS, but by all reports he was tested earlier in the year and came top 1% for agility (compared to other years), did very well in the 20m sprint (reports vary, but all say sub-3 seconds) did extremely well in the jumping (hence being able to slam dunk a basketball last year- video on youtube- despite weighing 99kg at the time!) and also apparently did very well in the beep test.

Are you guys all happy to pass up a Key Forward though?

No, ideally we'd prefer it if there was a Boyd/Hogan/Patton who just demanded to be taken at no.1, but all the whispers and so-on suggest that we simply see Petracca as the clear no.1 and as such we won't be "reaching" for a McCartin or Wright, if we keep pick 1. That is probably why we keep on saying that we're open to trading pick 1 though. If we get a good enough offer for pick 1, particularly one that gets us an elite "KPF" (either in the trade, or with the pick we get back) then we could definitely trade it, especially with next year's draft not looking like there are going to be any "KPF's" worth taking in the first 3. I think it's fair to say that if we get Petracca this year we'll be throwing everything we can at a Boyd/Cameron next year!

I refuse to be drawn into the hype this year. Some guys look made for footy and never get there, others never look made for it but get there because they want it.

If St Kilda wants to take a midfielder this year when they are crying out for a KPF (and Spencer White counts for about as much as Max King right now), let them do it. Never mind the fact that there is already a dearth of KPFs available looking into next years draft, and the fact that Riewoldt really won't play forever.

If the Saints want to get sucked into the hype, that's ok. I just hope Roos and Taylor aren't and draft in a way that suits Melbourne.

Hope you don't me dropping in. I believe he also tested very well for endurance (in the beep test at least), so athletically he is about as rounded as you're going to get, especially when all that is combined with his significant strength.

Ridiculously strong overhead for someone his height, too, like a Jack Ziebell and also comes from a very high level basketball background (like Pendles, Bontempelli, Dal Santo, etc), so is likely to have good "spacial awareness" in heavy traffic, like they do. Basically a more agile/nimble, quicker and more athletic version of Ziebell, with a bigger tank (meaning when he plays midfield he won't need to come off as much as Ziebell does and as such you'd expect will rack up more possies).

If you have picks 2 and 3 you could get him (via a trade of some kind, involving those picks), so it would probably be in your hands.

I mentioned the Freo situation in trading their number 1 pick for Croad. So in that spirit how about Chris Dawes and 3 for pick 1. Melbourne get Petracca and Bradshaw saints get McCartin and Dawes.

FFS, some of you have rocks in your head. Dawes isn't perfect, but if he can just get out there for a full season he'll continue to shield the younger guys in their development by taking two defenders and maybe kick 35 goals on the way.

Giving up Miller worked so damn well in developing Watts and Cook (lol), didn't it? And Dawesy is better than Miller.

Probably debateable. I reckon Miller was better at providing an option, Dawes is a better kick (when he gets it), and both have shite hands. Miller didn't run under the ball as much though. We also didn't give up any serious currency for Miller and his missus was cracking. Plus, saying "It's Dawes Time" is stupid. I vote Miller.

Who the hell sends two defenders to Dawes? He's little threat to clunk marks so nobody would bother sending a second defender to him.

Apart from anything else, he isn't in the age bracket that we are looking for, being 27yo next year. I dare say we'd only be trading it for someone under 23yo (either straight out, or in a package), unless their name starts with Patrick and ends with Dangerfield.

Greenwood and our pick 14 for your pick 2 where we would pick up Brayshaw.
Brayshaw would stll be a couple years away from making a real impact and Greenwood has had an outstanding year and there will still be decent players around at pick 14.

With all due respect, Croad was considerably better than Dawes. Croad was originally taken at pick 3 of his draft and then was basically best 22 for Hawthorn right from the get-go (had 60 games up at just 20yo and played 17 at just 18yo- too young to even be drafted these days- both extremely good efforts for a young "KPP") and was only 21yo when they did that trade with Freo (after playing 24 games that year for Hawthorn, taking his tally at just 21 to 84 games, including 5 finals) and he then kicked 42 goals (76 scoring shots) in his first year at Freo (a bottom 4 team at the time), at 22yo (Dawes at the same age kicked 30 and had 30 less scoring shots, in a top 2 team). So he was a lot more Hogan than Dawes, hence Freo being prepared to pay a lot for him and McPharlin.

Even when Freo traded him back to Hawthorn in 2003 (at just 23yo) they got pick 10 for him. If you guys traded Dawes back to Collingwood now (likewise after two seasons) I think it's very fair to say you wouldn't be getting pick 10 for him, like Freo did Croad. So comparing Dawes now with Croad, when he was traded in the package for pick 1, at 21yo and looking like having a long and excellent career, is well off the mark, IMO.

In thoery that deal Freo did was a fine one, as McPharlin has been outstanding for them in key positions at both ends for 13 years (I would take his career over that of plenty who have been taken at pick 1 over the years) and Croad had the ability to be just as good for them for a long time, but injuries and so-on obviously meant that he ended up finished by 28, albeit after being a vital part of Hawthorn's team in a premiership year.

The way Croad was tracking when Freo traded for him originally he was looking like playing 300 games pretty comfortably, at a high level, so I think they just got "unlucky" and it all wasn't helped by Hawthorn pulling a rabbit out of the hat and snaring Mitchell with that pick in the 30's, making that overall trade look a lot worse for Freo.

That trade has probably put a lot of other clubs off trading pick 1 though, which I think is a bit of a pity.

I think with the way the game is going Boyd's considerable amount of extra height will give him a big advantage over someone like McCartin (unless he has a bit of a growth spurt- otherwise, by the back end of his career I expect he'll be well on the short side for a key position) and I also much prefer someone who has the exceptional kicking for goal over someone who supposedly has real confidence issues with his goalkicking. Unless Paddy gets on top of that, he may go through his career like Travis Cloke has with his goalkicking, rarely believing in himself.

Boyd could also play that forward/ruck role, which gives him more strings to his bow and for us would mean we could trade a Hickey/Longer/Stanley down the track and then there's just how incredibly dominant he was in the juniors compared to a McCartin (or Hogan, who was more dominant at senior VFL level at the same age than McCartin was at champs level). Had Boyd not injured his ankle when he did in the champs last year he could have dominated the champs like no-one 195cm+ has before him, at least not for a very long time. Had 9 goals up in less than 4 quarters of footy and was just monstering teams until he went down. Had a Plugger-like level of dominance going that Paddy just didn't have in the champs this year (not sure how fit Paddy was at the time though).

Boyd looks like he may take a while to get rolling at AFL level, but so did Tom Hawkins and he's now as hard to stop as anyone.

I reckon Cameron is more of a CHF. Athletic enough to roam all over the shop and get kicks but he doesn't have the body for the wrestling and argy bargy that comes with parking yourself in the goal square regularly.

I was talking about next year, when they're due to come out of contract. That said, being reported all over the media tonight that GWS are mega-keen on Petracca and as such will do what it takes to get pick 1 off us, so it will be interesting in the least to see what they pony up.
