Returning to the draft, I'm pretty excited about getting Brayshaw. Can be explosive (2.82 over 20m), good kick on both feet, and wins clearances. You can see why our recruiters apparently rate him ahead of Petracca. Just needs to improve his tank over summer.

Where was this said?

I'd say Roos, Taylor and Mahoney have a much better clue than Bailey, Pendergast and Harrington
I trust Roos, time will tell with the other two.

In all honesty, they really are all just bloke's names. We don't know shit about them.

"Do you honestly trust Craig, Geoff and Albert less than Don, Andrew and Victor"?

"Yeah, well they're all better than Richard, Patrick and Steve".

I'm pretty sure there's been something about how we rate him #1 in the draft. Could be wrong.

Remember when our recruiters rated Gysberts as the third best mid in the draft?
Haha I don't know how seriously to take that, I think they'd have said something similar no matter who they picked at #12. And in fairness Gysberts WAS a good midfielder.

So will I. Have liked him since I watched this years U18 champs. Then saw his numbers playing seniors in the WAFL. However, 23 has basically netted us Frost and Newton (and most likely pick 40) so there is consolation.
I'll honestly be shocked if Blakely doesn't become at the very least a very good player, and will probably come on instantly. Using 40 would be consolation, especially if we pick up a McDonald type. It's hard to say that we got Newton for 23, we'd have taken him anyway :p

Interesting that we haven't had a pick in the 20s or 30s since Taggert in 2011. I'm more than happy with Vince and Dawes (yes, I know), but it's always nice to have a pick in the 25-30 range in case of sliders. I actually think you pay much less when trading a player for a pick in that range than you do relative to what you trade for a pick in the top 20. Clubs want a star for top picks, but are usually willing at accept a much more speculative player for a late 20s pick, especially since they tend to be clubs on the edge of finals. This is somewhat the case for Rhys Stanley going to Geelong for 21.

Agree with this. Only mentioned Newton because we got him for free. The Stanley trade actually made me feel ok about the Frost trade. But, it's amazing how the words 1st round pick change the value of trades. Compo aside, the premiers 1st round pick is valued more than the spooners 2nd round pick IMO.

Although the true value of a pick or player is the outcome of a trade, regardless of what others think. Stanley is worth pick 21 because Geelong were prepared to pay it.

I'm sold on Brayshaw, this kid looks like he'll be a jet from day one. Not really fussed about the other top pick (that's if CP goes at 1), I'm willing to back in whoever Taylor & co select.

Would be disappointing to see Pick 40 not get used though, there's definitely going to be a few highly interesting prospects still available at that selection.

I agree I think the recruiting team know that Petracca is going at 1 so it's safe t say they rate Brayshaw as the best player so it seems the club aren't missing out on much. Having said that they will both be guns, a bit like Judd and Hodge, first 7 seasons I would say Judd easily the better player, but now I'm leaning towards Hodge over the 13 year Period.

Hodge was injured a lot in the first half of his career, and Judd has struggled a lot throughout his second half. Interesting to think about.

Jay Clark and Sam Landsberger from the Herald Sun have put together a mock draft.

They are adamant Petracca will go #1 and Brayshaw #2.
They have us taking McCartin at 3 but their "late mail" says maybe Lever. They then have Lever sliding all the way down to #10, fwiw.

I guess that doesn't really tell us anything.
Herald Sun journos may not have the best reputations but these two normally get pretty good draft mail in the lead up to the event.

So... who would we rather. McCartin or Lever??
McCartin for me.

McCartin for mine too. At worst, Hogan insurance. At best, we'd have two very promising forward prospects who complement each other nicely. Wouldn't be totally disappointed with Lever though. Wouldn't be surprised if he won the RS from long odds.
