Somebody on 'Land linked an article from the West which vaguely linked us to Jarrod Pickett at #2 or #3. Having just seen his highlights vid, he looks good. Small, but electric.

He's a very talented kid - pretty similar to Steven Hill.

I know it's from demonland, so not criticizing you... But, Roos loves big bodied midfielders; Pickett is very good but a bit under sized for what I believe Roos is after. Reckon the article is WA propaganda for when West Coast take him at 11. They'll think they got a bargain, when in fact they got him where he should be.

I'm keen on McCartin with pick 3.

Any knocks on him are pretty similar to Jack Darling - and look how he turned out.

The kids a gun, a very smart forward who will be a physical and aerial threat. The best thing about him is, unlike Wright - McCartin impacts the scoreboard with goals.

Every side could do with a Gunston or Darling - or even Taylor Walker.

If we need a ruckman to add to the forward height - we can draft or trade one in later, and Gawn is already very good at that role anyway.

Is Wright a ruckman who can play forward or a forward who can ruck?

i.e. How was he played mostly this year and what is his prime strength? I know he's 203cm.

Must admit the more I think about it, the more I'm warming to the McCartin idea.

Hawthorn:

Key forwards: Roughead, Gunston
Ruck/forward: Hale
Small forward: Breust
Then rotating a couple of players through the other forward line slots as needed.

We have that now... But the quality is light years apart.

KF: Hogan, Dawes
R/Fwd: Gawn
SF: Garlett
Rotating: Kent, JKH, Salem, Watts, ect.

Change McCartin with Dawes (who as love as I love his passion, is 27 next year and is never gunna come on as a star) and the rotating players develop well we are at least on the way.

Clubs are apparently divided but the slight majority feel he's a forward who can ruck.

He's certainly not a bad fit for us - but I just rate McCartin as more of a 'pure footballer', rather than just an athlete or very tall - and I have a bit of a thing about taking good footy players over guys with great athletic ability and potential.

I actually disagree with Roos' supposed theory of it being hard to judge key position forwards in the juniors.

I look at it te other way and think of all the quality forwards in the AFL - the only one I can think of that wasn't a high pick was Taylor Walker - and that's only because Adelaide hid him in the country for 3 years as a kid.

Even Jack Darling didn't fall out of the first round - despite WCE spreading a bunch of rumours that weren't fair.

Roughead, Hawkins, Patton, Hogan, Daniher, Boyd, Riewoldt, Kennedy, Hurley, Riewoldt, Cloke, Franklyn, Cameron..

They all went first round - most of them top 3.

Not really.

It'd make it pretty hard for scouts to judge a 17 year old midfielder that gets tagged every week against the ones who don't.

You also aren't allowed to play a loose man in defense.

The rules shouldn't be about making a scout's job easier. If development is the aim of the game, they should have the exact same rules and conditions as the game they're aiming to play. If little Johnny can't shake a tag in U18s, he's going to find it harder at AFL level. May as well ban defending.

Disagree.

Need to let elite juniors play and learn the game, rather than be influenced by coaching manoeuvring.

I don't care how good an under 18 coach is - I just want the kids developed correctly and to see how they play.

I know who is a defiant for the melbourne team in the draft, as melbourne told him not to expect to fall past 3!!!

Is it Brayshaw?

When an AFL coach pulls an under 18 out of a huddle at a TAC Cup match to do some coaching of his own, you know said team's coach is pretty keen on the kid.
