We should be taking the best two players available at 2 and 3. Most observers who appear to be in the know think that is Brayshaw and McCartin.

I don't think we should be speculative with pick 3. Take McCartin please.

I don't think those observers are really any sort of authority on the matter. They baulked at Wines being a top 4 selection and they had Scully clearly pegged as the undisputed #1 of his draft.

Have faith in the recruiting department, it's now 100% Prendergast free!

Lever hasn't played in a year and a half, and a lot of draft prospects a year out don't continue there progress

This.

Way too much risk with Lever when there are other excellent options with far less risk available at Pick 3.

If they take Lever and he ***** up due to injury or just ends up being poor (because they overestimated based on obsolete info from 2013), I will tear up my membership.

Have heard from very close sources to Lever that we are right into him with pick number 3. Roos believes that Lever can play as a midfielder at the next level and is impressed with his leadership qualities. It isn't certain, but we are a big chance to pick him with no. 3.

Scully was undisputed #1 from all teams. Martin was never a #1 candidate. And also, Scully's work rate and leadership were supposedly off the charts...

And from all the reports I read back in the day, Toumpas was almost always projected higher than Wines - Knightmare's phantom draft, for example:

#4 Melbourne (Compensation Pick) – Jimmy Toumpas (SA – Mid/Def)
Height: 183cm, Weight: 77kg, DOB: 02/01/1994
Recruited from: Woodville West Torrens
Style: Luke Hodge
Player comparison:
Range: 2-5
Profile: Really damaging player with some versatility. Can take over and influence games as well as just about anyone in this draft and throughout the u18 champs for bursts really imposed himself on games which was impressive. Skill level excellent by both hand and foot, has that combination of hurt factor with the penetrating kick he has and clean ball use that will make him a big time weapon. Very capable of unloading for long goals. Consistently good decision maker. High level athlete and has that combination of explosive speed and agility that will make him desirable as well as in game work rate. Endurance excellent. Also has shown very early on that he can lift for the big games which is I strongly believe is something that he will take with him to AFL level. Can play as a midfielder, forward or back which is a big advantage but long term will no doubt develop into a midfielder. Has the ability to play both as an inside and outside midfielder. One important note with Toumpas is that throughout the u18 champs he was playing with hip problems so to play through injury and influence games in the way he did was very impressive.

#7 Port Adelaide- Oliver Wines (VIC - Mid)
Height: 185cm, Weight: 83kg, DOB: 07/10/1994
Recruited from: Bendigo Pioneers
Style: Jobe Watson
Player comparison: Josh Caddy
Range: 3-11
Profile: Wines is a really good all rounder and a real footballer who attacks the ball hard and more often than not comes out with it. Good ball user by both hand and foot and decision making ability and for an inside player has rare composure and regularly chooses the right option in a variety of situations. Good finisher around goal. Excellent at reading the play and gets into the right positions. Wines is already very physically developed, big ball winner who can step into an AFL team from round one and play some good football. Wins all the clearances and contested ball and is a guy you can rely on, on the inside to get the job done. He isn’t a standout athlete and has below average pace and endurance can still continue to improve but when a guy finds the footy like Wines does it doesn’t matter and you trust that his endurance will improve. I also really like his tackling technique – he pins the arms and stops the opposition player from being able to move the ball on. Real proven performer and likely to have an immediate impact at the next level and produce some really big numbers.

We're virtually no chance to take Lever, imo. It just doesn't make sense with McCartin seemingly available. Why punt on a key defender, coming off a knee, who you may turn into a mid ? And if it doesn't make sense, it won't happen.

Just because we're doing our due diligence and talking to a player, as we should, doesn't mean they're a "big chance" to be taken.

We never baulked at Wines. Our target was the best available at the pick. What threw us (and in the lead up, not on draft night) was GWS taking O'Rouke at 2. For months Toumpas was expected to go 2 or 3 and then GWS picked O'Rouke. We then decided to take the best availabe at 3 (Toumpas) and the dogs had specific targets in McRae and Stringer, hence Wines finished up at 7 and went to the Power.

I think the Roos-Lever rumour was around a few weeks ago. Not sure if this is updated info or what. Probably not. Any ideas on time frame from what you heard, Blease_Help_Me ?

I happen to play footy with Jake, and am close with his family friends from Romsey.
I heard this yesterday and that Josh Mahoney's statement the other week about narrowing the list down to 4 was just a smokescreen for other clubs.

Was also told that Peter Wright is a strong chance to fall to West Coast.

Why do they need a smokescreen when no other club can take Lever, other that the Saints who won't ?

You may have heard it, but logic tells you it's crap.

Do you also play footy with Peter Wright?

Let's be honest, the players themselves are rarely told until the night before the draft - if at all, whether they will be taken by a club.

All you can go on is how much contact the family has had with the club - but even that's not a giveaway.

I have substantially more faith in the recruiting department now, no doubt. If they think we should take Lever at 3 because he's the best available (in their eyes), then I'd back them in.

For mine though, as things stand now with his time out of the game, it would seem a little daft.

Agreed. I'm not saying the club is definitely going to pick Lever, just that we are heavily considering him and that a decision has not been made yet.

Tbh I don't really care anymore. We could pick Jesus at P3 and he'd still turn out awful. Working ourselves up over it just makes it more painful. This is why I no longer care if Toumpas turns out good. If it happens, it happens. If it doesn't, I'm not going to tear my eyes out every time I see Ollie Wines.

1. Christian Petracca
2. Angus Brayshaw
3. Jesus

A late bolter up the draft order.
